2018 Rowan Football Page 3 Rowan University Head Coach Jay Accorsi Jay Accorsi is in his 17th season as the head coach of the Rowan University football Accorsi Year-By-Year team. He is also in charge of the defensive unit. Year Won Lost 2002 10 1 Accorsi is the seventh coach for the sport at the University. Accorsi started with the 2003 7 3 Profs as a graduate assistant in 1993. He took over the head position in 2002 after nine 2004 10 3 years as an assistant coach. Accorsi has guided Rowan to seven appearances in the 2005 11 2 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, two trips to the national semifnals and 2006 9 3 seven New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championships. His coaching record 2007 4 6 stands at 124-55. Accorsi is the all-time leader in coaching victories at Rowan. 2008 8 2 2009 7 3 Last season, Rowan recorded a 4-6 overall record. Defensive end Kevin Stokes and 2010 9 1 defensive back Shaquille Lee were members of the NJAC All-Conference frst team. 2011 5 5 Offensive lineman Darryl Guilford and kicker Tyler Knighton received honorable men- 2012 7 3 tion. Dungee also received ECAC South Defensive Player of the Year and D3foot- Overall 124 55 ball.com All-America honors. In 2014, the Profs had a 7-4 record with a 6-1 NJAC mark. Rowan earned a share of the conference championship and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament. Accorsi was chosen the NJAC Co-Coach of the Year and 15 players were named to the All-Conference team. Linebacker Tyler Jenkins was selected to the American Football Accolades Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America team while running back Withler Marcelin received D3football.com All-America 2002 NJAC Coach of the Year 2005 NJAC Coach of the Year honorable mention. Tri-State Coach of the Year Rowan had a 9-3 overall record and a 6-1 conference mark in 2013. The Profs won a share of the NJAC title and received the 2006 NJAC Coach of the Year conference’s automatic bid to the national tournament. The football team defeated Endicott College, 24-0 in the frst round. In 2013 NJAC Coach of the Year 2012, Accorsi guided the Profs to a 7-3 overall record, 6-1 in the NJAC for a second place fnish. Rowan was awarded an at-large 2014 NJAC Co-Coach of the Year bid into the NCAA Championships. In 2011, Rowan posted a 5-5 record with a 5-4 conference mark.

In 2010, the Profs were 9-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference. Rowan earned a share of the NJAC title with Montclair State NJAC Championships University and SUNY Cortland. Rowan posted a 7-3 record in 2009 and an 8-2 mark in 2008. In 2007, the Profs went 4-6. Rowan 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2013, 2014 fnished the season with a 9-3 record in 2006. The Profs won their third consecutive NJAC Championship and ffth in six years and they advanced to the quarterfnals of the national tournament. The Profs won the NJAC Championship and reached the semifnals of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the second consecutive season. He oversaw 7 35-34 .507 the wide receivers and quarterbacks. In baseball, Accorsi coached the outfelders and infelders. Accorsi graduated from Nichols College (MA) in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He earned a master's in sports science from the U.S. Sports Academy (Daphne, AL) in 1992 and a master's in business administration from Rowan in 1997.At Nichols, Accorsi was a running back for four years and was captain of the football team his senior year. A native of Somers, CT, Accorsi attended Somers High School and graduated in 1981. He lettered in football, wrestling and baseball.

He is a member of the AFCA, Maxwell Football Club and the New Jersey Football Coaches Association. He is on the South Jersey Chapter of the National Football Foundation committee. Accorsi served as a NCAA representative during the 2007 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. He is on the Adam Taliaferro Foundation Advisory Commit- tee and previously served on the NCAA Division III East Region Advisory Committee. Accorsi has served on the AFCA Program and Rules & Exhibits Committees in the past. He is also a voting member of the AFCA Division III Coaches Poll. Accorsi is the chair of the AFCA Division III All-America Team Selection Committee.

At Rowan, Accorsi has been an advisor for Delta Phi Epsilon sorority and served on the Campus Aesthetics and Environmental Concerns Committee. He has been involved with the Peer Referral Orientation and Staff (PROS) program and has represented the athletic department at freshman and transfer orientations. He has initiated and participated in several service programs at the University, including: Coach to Cure MD, Campus Clean and Green, Adopt-A-Family Thanksgiving Basket Program through the Aids Coalition of Southern New Jersey, Get in the Game. Save A Life. Bone Marrow Registry, Gloucester County Clean Communities Program, Town of Glassboro Clean Up Day and adopting the DeFillipo family through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.

Accorsi continually attends various high school and youth organization clinics and is a common presenter for a wide variety of clinics and organizations. He has been the guest speaker for the Dr. Warren J. McClain Memorial Touchdown Club of Southern New Jersey and the Brooks-Irvine Memorial Football Club. In addition, Accorsi has been a speaker at the South Jersey Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame/Adam Taliaferro Foundation All-Star Banquet.

The team had 11 players named to the All-NJAC teams, while freshman Shane Gaines was named the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year. Wood also garnered the Accolades NJAC Coach of the Year award. The Sea Gulls claimed the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl Championship for the 2004 ACFC Coach of the Year second-consecutive year in 2014, topping Albright College, 48-27. Senior punter Kyle Hamby was also named 2011 Empire 8 Coach of the Year an honorable mention All-American by D3football.com and Empire 8 Special Teams Player of the Year. AFCA Region I Coach of the Year 2012 Empire 8 Coach of the Year Wood led the Sea Gulls back to the NCAA tournament for the third straight season in 2012. Salisbury hosted Rowan University in the frst round of the tournament and defeated the Profs, 17-9, before seeing its season 2015 NJAC Coach of the Year come to an end at Widener University in the second round. Five were also named to the D3football.com All-East Team. 2015 Wood’s 2011 team had the program’s deepest run in the NCAA tournament since the Sea Gulls went to the Empire 8 Championships Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl in the 1986 season. For his efforts, Wood was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region I Coach of the Year. ACFC Championships Salisbury won the Empire 8 title in its frst season in the league and set program records for points (584) and 2004, 2005 rushing yards (4,596) in a season. The Gulls placed 12 on the all-conference teams while Wood earned Empire 8 Coach of the Year honors and junior quarterback Dan Griffn was Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, six players earned all-region honors from D3football.com and senior offensive lineman Alex Smith became NCAA Appearances Salisbury’s 15th AFCA All-American in program history. 2002, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 In 2002, Wood guided Salisbury to its most successful campaign in 16 years (9-2 record), which included a nine-game winning streak. The Gulls earned the program’s frst NCAA tournament appearance since 1986 and ECAC Bowl Championships placed 15 players on the all-conference teams. The Gulls have had eight 1,000-yard rushers in Wood’s 19 sea- 2005, 2006, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 sons as head coach. In 2007 the Gulls fnished second in the nation in rushing defense, while fnishing fourth in 2002 and 2005 and sixth in 2004. In 2003, Salisbury fnished ffth in the nation in total defense and seventh in rushing defense. Before SU, he spent six years in 3 Joe Dailey 15-11-1 .555 Division II as the head coach at Bowie State University. Wood played defensive back for the Sea Gulls from 3 Bill Yeagle 15-13-1 .534 1980-83 and fnished with seven career interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns. He was a starter and team captain on the 1983 team that earned Salisbury’s frst-ever NCAA tournament berth and advanced to the national semifnals. Wood earned all-state defensive back honors by The Baltimore Sun and recognition as a Street & Smith All-American during his career. Wood began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Salisbury under Head Coach Mike McGlinchey in 1984 and became a graduate assistant coach for the Sea Gulls in 1985. He moved to Bowie State as a graduate assistant coach in 1986, coaching the defensive backs and special teams. He became a full-time assistant coach with the Bulldogs in 1988, assuming the duties of assistant head coach and defensive coordinator while earning his Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology in 1989. He remained at Bowie State as an assistant coach until 1992, when he became the assistant head football coach at Virginia Union University. A year later, Wood returned to Bowie State as head coach where he inherited a team that fnished 1-10 in 1992. He compiled a 21-37-1 record in six seasons at Bowie State. The team’s 6-3 record in 1998 was its best in 10 years. Wood and his wife Tonya have one daughter, Sherece.
