The creative portfolio includes programme notes written by Agatha Gothe-Snape and I which were originally published alongside the performance. 3 Abstract A Sound not Wholly for the Ear explores de-centred listening. The thesis presents an analysis of 20th and 21st century compositions that transformed the act of listening prior to situating my creative portfolio, an original composition for artist Agatha Gothe-Snape’s Rhetorical Chorus, within this lineage of ideas. I propose methodological categories of conceptualism and affect as strategies to de-centre listening. I define de-centered listening as a non-linear engagement with sound that incorporates and or critiques the context, temporality, physicality and environment in the listening experience. Conceptualism, defined here as a preoccupation with ideas as opposed to materials (or a conversation between the two) and often concerned with the political and social implications of creating and viewing art/music, and affect, defined as a predominantly physiological energy that has the potential to transform engaged entities at various levels of attention, are examples of how de-centered listening can be achieved. The first chapter provides a definition and theoretical framework for de-centered listening by outlining several critical and philosophical theories on listening. Following this, the two key areas of de-centering listening, conceptualism and affect, are investigated via an analysis of key works in 20th and 21st century composition. Works such as John Cage’s 4’33”, La Monte Young’s Composition 1960, Hanne Darboven’s Wende 80, and Johannes Kreidler’s Fremdarbeit are used to illustrate conceptualism as a strategy for de-centered listening, providing varied practical examples of how this can be done. In the following chapter, Furniture Music by Eric Satie, Ambient 1: Music for Airports by Brian Eno, Deep Listening Pieces by Pauline Oliveros and Sound Characters by Maryanne Amacher illustrate the use of 4 affect to de-centre listening by incorporating the physiology of hearing into the composition, and drawing upon the environment in which the work is heard. Finally, the creative portfolio is situated within this lineage.     ABOUT THE ARTISTS Joan La Barbara La Barbara is a composer, performer, sound artist and actor renowned for developing a unique vocabulary of experimental and extended vocal techniques (multiphonics, circular singing, ululation and glottal clicks; her “signature sounds”), influencing generations of other composers and singers. Awards, prizes and fellowships include The Foundation for Contemporary Arts John Cage Award (2016); Premio Internazionale Demetrio Stratos; DAAD-Berlin and Civitella Ranieri Artist-in-Residencies; Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition; seven National Endowment for the Arts awards (Music Composition, Opera/Music Theater, Inter-Arts, Recording, Solo Recital, Visual Arts), and numerous commissions for multiple voices, chamber ensembles, theatre, orchestra, interactive technology, and soundscores for dance, video and film.     JOAN LA BARBARA’S EARLY EXPLORATIONS OF THE VOICE by Samara Ripley B.Mus., Mount Allison University, 2014 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Music) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2016 © Samara Ripley, 2016 Abstract Experimental composer and performer Joan La Barbara treats the voice as a musical instrument. Through improvisation, she has developed an array of signature sounds, or extended vocal techniques, that extend the voice beyond traditional conceptions of Western classical singing. At times, her signature sounds are primal and unfamiliar, drawing upon extreme vocal registers and multiple simultaneous pitches. In 2003, La Barbara released Voice is the Original Instrument, a two-part album that comprises a selection of her earliest works from 1974 – 1980. The compositions on this album reveal La Barbara’s experimental approach to using the voice. Voice Piece: One-Note Internal Resonance Investigation explores the timbral palette within a single pitch. Circular Song plays with the necessity of a singer’s breath by vocalizing, and therefore removing, all audible inhalations and exhalations. Hear What I Feel brings the sense of touch into an improvisatory composition and performance experience. In October Music: Star Showers and Extraterrestrials, La Barbara moves past experimentation and layers her different sounds into a cohesive piece of music. This thesis is a study of La Barbara’s treatment of the voice in these four early works. I will frame my discussion with theories of the acousmatic by Mladen Dolar and Brian Kane and will also draw comparisons with Helmut Lachnemann’s musique concrète instrumentale works.

Even if they may be reluctant to offer a precise theory, and even if they may distrust canon formation, members of the informed public have a clear idea of who the central canonical minimalist composers were or are. Sitting front and center are always four white male Americans: La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass. This dissertation negotiates with this received wisdom, challenging the stylistic coherence among these composers implied by the term minimalism and scrutinizing the presumed neutrality of their music. This dissertation is based in the acceptance of the aesthetic similarities between minimalist sculpture and music. Michael Fried’s essay “Art and Objecthood,” which occupies a central role in the history of minimalist sculptural criticism, serves as the point of departure for three excursions into minimalist music. The first excursion deals with the question of time in minimalism, arguing that, contrary to received wisdom, minimalist music is not always well understood as static or, in Jonathan Kramer’s terminology, vertical. The second excursion addresses anthropomorphism in minimalist music, borrowing from Fried’s concept of (bodily) presence.

This essay follows the drone-form from the inception of Minimalist musical practice in the work of La Monte Young, to contemporary developments in works incorporating the drone by major artists operating in the experimental wings of popular music. To clarify the relationship or non-relation between the Minimalist feature of the drone and musical meaning, three drone-related works by Joan La Barbara, Eleh and Keiji Haino are discussed with respect to their relative proximity to, or distance from, language and/or speech.

  • "Music with Roots in the Aether," a 14-Hour Video Program Featuring Seven Contemporary Composers and Their Works at the Mandeville Art Gallery
    "Music with Roots in the Aether," a 14-hour video program featuring seven contemporary composers and their works at the Mandeville Art Gallery May 6, 1981 "Music with Roots in the Aether," a 14-hour video program featuring seven contemporary composers and their works, will be shown in the Mandeville Center Art Gallery at the University of California, San Diego from May 21 through June 12. The series was designed and directed by Robert Ashley, a composer who has featured himself along with Pauline Oliveros of UC San Diego, David Behrman, Philip Glass, Alvin Lucier, Gordon Mumma and Terry Riley in the program. One hour is devoted to an interview with each artist and another hour spent on a performance of each composer"s music. The gallery will be set up to provide a comfortable environment for viewing. "The talk, like the music, is fascinating, and, with the documentary, Ashley has suddenly become the Studs Terkel of the avant-garde," wrote a critic in American Film. In the interviews, the work habits, philosophies and eccentricities of each artist are revealed. The music itself is unorthodox, and, as the title of the program suggests, seems to flow from the upper regions of the artists' consciousness. Oliveros, a member of the UC San Diego Department of Music faculty, discusses meditation and modes of consciousness in her interview. She is a composer who worked with electronic music in the 1960s, but has since moved on to meditational and conceptual pieces that often include the audience. On the tape, she performs a piece called "Rose Mountain Slow Runner," which offers a combination of accordian and voice in a study of beats, tones, timbres and vocal resonances.
