London to Paris bike ride with Myeloma UK! We set off (Myeloma patients, haematologists, nurses, family and friends affected by Myeloma and all other supporters) on Thursday 25th June from Greenwich, ready to cycle the 500km to Paris. It was a tough four days, with plenty of hill climbs. Whenever I was struggling with a hill or a long day in the saddle, I just had to look up and see the sea of orange jerseys reminding me why I was there 'to make Myeloma history'. Riding into Paris was so emotional, I was thinking about all the people I had met on the ride, the stories of why they were also on the ride, the patients/ relatives and friends I had supported during my time as a specialist nurse and also my family at home who were supporting me along this epic ride. Myeloma history. And all the support I Hopefully one day we will make have received is going towards that. Here is a picture of me by the Eiffel Tower on day 4! People can still sponsor as the just giving page doesn't close until the end of July. Thank you again Donna Burgess

Saturday September 9th 2017 Last year participants from this Parish contributed £2835 towards the Trust’s total of £47104 raised by participants. Grant aid of £42000 was subsequently given out to twenty seven Churches—one of which was our Parish Church. In addition half of the money raised was returned to churches nominated by those taking part.

This year, for the first time, the event was “advertised” with a display at the Church’s Summer Fair resulting in some additional offers of help and some early promises of sponsorship, - great!

Will you consider taking part or sponsoring someone ?

Taking part is very loosely translated— enjoying yourself whilst financially benefiting a very worthwhile cause ! Our aim is to ensure that the cost of important repairs or improvements for some of the large number of wonderful heritage churches in the county is shared by more than their individual congregations, to the benefit of us all. Please see the Trust website:- www.hihct.org.uk for more details or contact Norman Denison (388889) to find out more.

The Area Dean has the last word

Dear Friends Terror How are we to respond to senseless brutality in London and Manchester? When defenceless children and young people who had gathered simply to enjoy music are left dead, injured or traumatised, when Londoners are enjoying a great night out, what is to be said? There are no simple answers, but I believe the people of Manchester and London have given us a powerful lesson in how to respond to tragedy, pain and anger. On hearing of the attack, many people from the city rushed to offer help, shelter, food and even their own blood. They were drawn from all the communities and religious groups that live together in Manchester. Among them were Sikhs, Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus, atheists, and many others. In London, Southwark Cathedral was closed, but the clergy opened their homes to those who were traumatised and couldn’t get home. The emergency services reacted with characteristic care and professionalism. Taxi drivers took people home without thought for fares. Prayers and thoughts were offered for those affected. To me, this response reflects what the Apostle Paul had in mind when he wrote to a community experiencing great violence 2,000 years ago. He took their suffering very seriously, and wrote to them with advice: “do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” This is not advice that ignores or lessens the very real pain that is felt at such times. It is not guidance that suggests those responsible for violence should not be brought to justice. No. Rather, it describes an important truth: that repaying evil with evil simply multiplies evil, but that evil can be overcome by responding with goodness. Evil simply has no response to true goodness, just as darkness cannot overcome light. And so as candles are lit for the victims of the Manchester and London attacks over the coming weeks, months, and years, may they remind us – amid the pain – that the greatest response to evil is to respond with goodness together.
