Congratulations to all Panania North students who represented East Hills at the SSW Regional Carnival. Our team performed well on the day and two of our students, Dylan T and Sidhant T, were successful in gaining places in the SSW Regional Team, that will compete at the State Carnival. What a wonderful effort! We wish them every success in this upcoming event.

Music

Students at Panania North have been very busy learning about the different elements in music. We are learning to play different percussion instruments and musical notes on our xylophones. We have been very fortunate to have Mrs Willson come in to help, and play her cello for us!

SRC Chess Project

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Keep reading over the holidays. Year 3 to 6 can enter theirs online via their student portal (K-2 do not need to do this). Local libraries often have events happening too.

Education Week

Keep The Date Free – Wednesday 2 August from 12.30pm This year’s theme is ‘I learn, we learn’, celebrating personalised student learning as the foundation of public education in NSW. At Panania North we’ll be showcasing the products of our students’ learning in classrooms.

It is a celebration of our schools' commitment to ensuring:

System-wide improvement Every student, every teacher, every leader and every school will improve every year.

High expectations for all A culture of high expectations for our students and our educators sets high standards, which leads to high achievement.

Personalised student learning By teaching to the strengths and needs of each individual, students will be better able to reach and exceed their potential.

Wellbeing Every student will be known, cared for and respected.

Creating stronger ties with local communities Parents and carers are our schools' partners in the education and wellbeing of each student. Partnerships with local businesses and industry create opportunities for our students to contribute to and thrive in society.

Further information about our day of celebration and showcasing of students work will be published early next term. Newsletter 11 30 June, 2017 Health Alert We have had a few cases of Conjunctivitis and Chickenpox within our school. Please read through the information below and consult a doctor if you seek further assistance.

Conjunctivitis • Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection, especially among children under five. It is an inflammation (swelling and redness) of the conjunctiva which is the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. Conjunctivitis can be caused by an infection (virus or bacteria) which is highly contagious, or by an allergic reaction which is not contagious.

You could develop conjunctivitis if you come into contact with:

o Discharge from the eyes, nose or throat of an infected person through touch, coughing or sneezing. o Contaminated fingers or objects. o In summertime, conjunctivitis can be spread when children swim in contaminated water or share contaminated towels.

A person with conjunctivitis will remain infectious as long as there is a discharge from their eye.

Signs and symptoms Conjunctivitis can be caused by an infection (virus or bacteria) or by an allergic reaction. It is not always clear which type of conjunctivitis is present, because both cause redness and swelling of the conjunctiva. Symptoms usually develop within 24 to 72 hours of becoming infected and last from two days to three weeks.

See a doctor if your child has:

o severe pain o problems with their vision/eyesight increased swelling, redness and tenderness in the eyelids and around the eyes o o o is generally unwell and has a fever (temperature over 38 C)

Chickenpox

• Chickenpox is a viral illness caused by the herpes zoster virus (also known as the Varicalla- Zoster virus). In children it usually causes a relatively mild illness

Signs and symptoms

Chickenpox (varicella) begins with a sudden onset of slight fever, runny nose, feeling generally unwell and a skin rash. The rash usually begins as small lumps that turn into blisters and then scabs. The rash appears over three to four days and symptoms usually occur two weeks after exposure to the virus.

Persons who are previously vaccinated can still get chickenpox. If chickenpox occurs in a vaccinated person it is usually more mild and less contagious than in an unvaccinated person.

Treatment Chickenpox infection usually resolves without treatment.
