Preamble: As per proposal submitted by this Office reference {1), regarding removal of trees by department in the 63.085 Ha Forest land under this Division which are obstacle for four lane/six lane highway construction between Goa/Karnataka NH-66 {17) coming under proposed forest land are to be cut, processed departmentally, Chief Conservator of Forest, Canara Circle, Sirsi, has issued permission in the Official memorandum as referred {2) for transportation to Govt. Timber Depot & Firewood to concerned Firewood Depot. In the Kumta Range, forest land coming under National Highway widening, permission has to be issued for cutting of 65 marked trees, ordered as following. Order For immediate removal of trees in the 63.085 ha Forest land which are being obstacle for four lane/six lane Highway construction between Goa/Karnataka NH-66 {17), in the proposed forest land under Kumta Range in the following area to carry out work departmentally transport firewood produced to your range firewood depot & logs, billets, poles to Govt. Depot & firewood to firewood depot, up to date:28.02.2015 period has been fixed. 04} Work has to carried under Karnataka transporting Act 1999 & Forest proceeds produced are to be transported to govt. Depot I Firewood Depot. OS} Work has to be carried as per Karnataka Forest rule 1969 rule 58 & Karnataka Forest code chapter VII, to maintain account & records. 06} Staff concerned to the work has to record details of logs variety, log measurement, transportation & transit pass in KFAC format No.21 to 24, 33 & 35 concerned Range Forest Officer & Asst. Conservator of forest have to inspect regularly. Transit pass of the produces are important documents most care has to be taken for maintaining & proper inspection has to carried regarding execution of work.~· ~=-=....._ ~ ( ..3 .. ) .... -3- 07) During felling of marked trees care has to taken not to cut tree without mark. Asst. O;mservator of Forest has to monitor issue proper direction to forest guard now & then submit names of forest guards deputed for supervision of said work to this office. 08) In the marked trees, perimeter more tha~ 60 em are to converted to logs on priority basis convert first logs & billets next preparing other produces. Also logs & billets produced from the plantation are to be transported to Govt. Timber Depot only. 09) Work has to carried as per SSR approved for the year 2014-15. Action has to be taken to complete work latest by date: 28.02.2015. In any case no further time extension is allowed. 10) Excluding the trees in the KCDC handed over by Department, only other trees in the mark list are to be cut & transported. With her rich cultural heritage as superbly manifest in many of the architectural wonders (palaces, temples, mosques, forts, etc), caves and prehistoric wall paintings, her widely varied topography ranging from the monotonous plains to the loftiest mountains of the world, her large climatic variations ranging from some of the wettest and the driest as well as from the hottest and the coldest parts of the world, beautiful long beaches on the sea coast, vast stretches of sands, gregarious tropical forests and above all, the great variety of the life-style, India offers an unending choice for the tourist. In developing countries like India tourism has become one of the major sectors of the economy, contributing to a large proportion of the National income and generating huge employment opportunities. It has become the fastest growing service industry in the country with great potentials for its further expansion and diversification. Tourism industry is capable to generate employment to both skilled and unskilled workers, directly and indirectly. This paper studied the problem faced by tourism industry in coastal Karnataka .     AGE AND RATE OF GROWTH OF THE INDIAN MACKEREL, RAS- TRELLIGER CANAGURTA (CUVIER) WITH NOTES ON ITS FISHERY AT KARWAR BY N. RADHAKRISHNAN {Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute) INTRODUCTION Information on the growth of a fish is an important pre-requisite in under­ standing the dynamics of fish populations. In fishery yield studies, such as those of Beverton and Holt (1957) the growth is a basic variable determining the exploitable stock and yield from the fishery. The present paper deals with the age and growth studies of the Indian mackerel incorporating the results of investigations carried out at Karwar from January 1954 to March 1959. At Karwar, the mackerel season generally commences in October and ends in the following March. After this period, only stray specimens are netted. LENGTH FREQUENCY STITDIBS For purposes of this study, the total length of the fish was taken into account. The specimens used in the present investigation were obtained from the inshore fishing grounds around Karwar by the shore seines {Rampan and Yendi) which are the most important gears used all along the Kanara coast. Text figures 1 to 4 show the length frequency distribution of samples obtained at monthly intervals from January 1954 to March 1959. In some months, where the samples were too small to form a comparison with other months, the data for these months were neglected from the length frequency analysis. Further, the monthly data of each year have been pooled into three periods, (t) January to March (2) April to September and (3) October to December. This was done for the sake of convenience, to make comparison from one period to the other more uniform.

There are many other temples all over this small town. Ankola and Kumta on Highway 17 are the main towns near Gokarna. Gokarna is historically known as one of the seven important Hindu pilgrimage centers and is located on what was once unspoiled beach near the estuary of river Aghanashini with its palm trees, other colorful tropical fruit and flower trees. Of late due to the numbers of tourists the character of this town has changed. This town is no longer just a center of pilgrimage though massive numbers of devotees still visit the town for the purposes of offering prayers and worship to Lord Shiva. Due to its laid back unspoiled and rustic nature, many younger western tourists started visiting Gokarna about a decade ago.

    GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCES CENTRAL GROUND WATER BOARD GROUND WATER INFORMATION BOOKLET UTTARA KANNADA DISTRICT, KARNATAKA SOUTH WESTERN REGION BANGALORE NOVEMBER 2008 1 FOREWORD Ground water contributes to about eighty percent of the drinking water requirements in the rural areas, fifty percent of the urban water requirements and more than fifty percent of the irrigation requirements of the nation. Central Ground Water Board has decided to bring out district level ground water information booklets highlighting the ground water scenario, its resource potential, quality aspects, recharge – discharge relationship, etc., for all the districts of the country. As part of this, Central Ground Water Board, South Western Region, Bangalore, is preparing such booklets for all the 27 districts of Karnataka state, of which six of the districts fall under farmers’ distress category. The Uttara Kannda district Ground Water Information Booklet has been prepared based on the information available and data collected from various state and central government organisations by several hydro-scientists of Central Ground Water Board with utmost care and dedication. This booklet has been prepared by Shri G.S.Deshpande , Scientist-B and Shri B.K.Kallapur, Scientist-D under the guidance of Dr. K. Md. Najeeb, Superintending Hydrogeologist, Central Ground Water Board, South Western Region, Bangalore. The figures were prepared by S/Sri. H.P.Jayaprakash, Scientist-C and K.Rajarajan, Assistant Hydrogeologist. The efforts of Report processing section in finalising and bringing out the report in this format are commendable. I take this opportunity to congratulate them for the diligent and careful compilation and observation in the form of this booklet, which will certainly serve as a guiding document for further work and help the planners, administrators, hydrogeologists and engineers to plan the water resources management in a better way in the district.
