The deluge in China this week saw more than 35 killed and more heavy rain threaten- ing surrounding regions, and more than 200,000 people moved to safer areas. An unprecedented downpour dumped a year’s rain in just three hours on the city of Zheng- zhou, instantly overwhelming drains and sending torrents of muddy, swirling water through streets, road tunnels and the subway system. Hundreds of thousands of people in the surrounding area have been affected by the flood, as farmland was inundated and road and rail links severed. In worst-hit Zheng- zhou, grim images of the horror inside the subway system were shown over social media, with water rising during Tuesday’s rush hour from the ankles of passengers to their necks. COMBAT TRAINING SCHOOL - DIYATALAWA THE CRADLE OF THE SRI LANKA AIR FORCE DISHAN JOSEPH he salubrious green hills of Diyatalawa are embellished with natural beauty. For decades, this hill station has been a garrison town, first discovered and established by the Royal Army in 1859, and subsequently enhanced by the T Royal Air Force. The pioneer British military officers who appreciated the significance of this area, bestowed with diverse terrain, realised its strategic impor- tance for ground combat training. Diyatalawa has an amazing terrain layout including ridges, valleys, ravines, hills and waterways. The Combat Training School (CTS) of the Sri Lanka Air Force has a beautiful and inspiring history.

The British Army had fought the Dutch in South Africa in 1900. The land area in Diyatalawa would soon be used as a prisoner-of-war camp during the Boer War, where nearly 5,000 prisoners were held on the instructions of the then Governor General of Ceylon Sir Ridge- way. In May 1952, the first intake of Ceylonese recruits of the Royal Ceylon Air Force commenced their train- ing at the RCYAF Katunayake. Subse- quently, Flight J.V.
