“CAN’T HELP SINGING”: THE “MODERN” OPERA DIVA IN HOLLYWOOD FILM, 1930–1950 Gina Bombola A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Tim Carter Mark Katz Chérie Rivers Ndaliko Jocelyn Neal ©2017 Gina Bombola ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Gina Bombola: “Can’t Help Singing”: The “Modern” Opera Diva in Hollywood Film, 1930–1950 (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) Following the release of Columbia Pictures’ surprise smash hit, One Night of Love (1934), major Hollywood studios sought to cash in on the public’s burgeoning interest in films featuring opera singers. For a brief period thereafter, renowned Metropolitan Opera artists such as Grace Moore and Lily Pons fared well at the box office, bringing “elite” musical culture to general audiences for a relatively inexpensive price. By the 1940s, however, the studios began grooming their own operatic actresses instead of transplanting celebrities from the stage. Stars such as Deanna Durbin, Kathryn Grayson, and Jane Powell thereby became ambassadors of opera from the highly commercial studio lot. My dissertation traces the shifts in film production and marketing of operatic singers in association with the rise of such cultural phenomena as the music-appreciation movement, all contextualized within the changing social and political landscapes of the United States spanning the Great Depression to the Cold War. Drawing on a variety of methodologies—including, among others, archival research, film analysis, feminist criticisms, and social theory—I argue that Hollywood framed opera as less of a European theatrical art performed in elite venues and more of a democratic, albeit still white, musical tradition that could be sung by talented individuals in any location.

  • Detroit's Thanksgiving Day Tradition
DETROIT’S THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITION It was, legend says, a typically colorful, probably chilly, November day in 1622 that Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated the new world's bounty with a sumptuous feast. They sat together at Plymouth Plantation (they spelled it Plimouth) in Massachusetts, gave thanks for the goodness set before them, then dined on pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, maize, cranberry sauce, turkey and who knows what else. Actually, fish was just as predominant a staple. And history books say pumpkin pie really debuted a year later. But regardless of the accuracy of the details, that's how Thanksgiving Day is seen by Americans -- except Detroiters. They may have most of the same images as everyone else, but with a new twist that began in 1934. That's when Detroiters and their outstate Michigan compatriots found themselves at the dawn of an unplanned behavior modification, courtesy of George A. "Dick" Richards, owner of the city's new entry in the National Football League: The Detroit Lions. Larry Paladino, Lions Pride, 1993 Four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. The relationship between Detroit and Thanksgiving dates back to 1934 when owner G.A. Richards scheduled a holiday contest between his first-year Lions and the Chicago Bears. Some 75 years later, fans throughout the State of Michigan have transformed an annual holiday event into the single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. Indeed, if football is America’s passion, Thanksgiving football is Detroit’s passion. DETROIT AND THANKSGIVING DAY No other team in professional sports can claim to be as much a part of an American holiday as can the Detroit Lions with Thanksgiving.

As John Mackovic leads his Arizona Wild- cats into year three of his rebuilding plan, he does John so firmly in place, with a new staff and a new Mackovic sense of purpose. Mackovic does so intently focused on the Head Coach task at hand – building a winner in Tucson – with a track record of success to match. Mackovic YEARS COACHING: 34 YEARS AT ARIZONA: 3 has more wins than any other head coach in the Pacific-10 Conference and is just six victories 2 0 0 3 away from collegiate win No. 100. It’s a focus seen on the field with a highly- productive spring practice after introducing five new assistants and an improved defensive phi- losophy. “We have to play better defense in order to have a good team,” said Mackovic. “Our focus was that way all throughout the spring. From where we started to where we finished, we are comfortable, but I know that we are not satisfied.” That’s not to say that his record-setting of- fensive style will take a back seat. Not an offense that set nearly 50 individual and team offensive records a year ago. It’s a focus seen in the classroom as 22 play- ers earned University of Arizona Mary J. Roby academic honors (3.0 GPA or better) in 2002-03, including two first-team Pac-10 All-Academic se- lections (six in the last two seasons) and Jason Johnson, the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Ath- lete award winner. It’s a focus seen off the field as a head coach builds a tight-knit bond with his charges.
