Degree: PhD in Theology, 2003 The purpose of this thesis is firstly to provide a co-ordinated history of the development of the network of Regional Theological Courses which has grown, since the founding of the Southwark Ordination Course in 1960, to a position where by 2000 the network was providing part-time training for about half of the ordinands of the Church of England. Secondly there is a critical assessment of the effectiveness of these Courses both relative to the more traditional Theological Colleges and having regard to the work of those ordained and in parochial ministry. The thesis draws heavily on unpublished primary source documentation from the archives of the Courses, together with interviews with key personnel and a survey of those who have trained on the Courses, their subsequent supervisors and diocesan Bishops. Chapters 1 and 2 describe the development of the Courses fi-om 1960-1979 and Chapter 3 is about the watershed of 1979 when unexpectedly all the Courses were validated for training Stipendiary as well as Non-Stipendiary clergy. Chapter 4 introduces critical questions raised by key interviewees and Chapter 5 describes further interviews with current Course Principals. The period from 1979 to 2000 is covered by Chapter 6 which describes central Reports and debates and Chapters 7- 10 which show the development of the individual Courses in the Regions. Selected curriculum issues are raised in Chapter 11 and this is followed by the results of the Survey of Bishops in Chapter 12, of Supervisory Clergy in Chapter 13 and of Past Students in Chapter 14. Chapter 15 lists conclusions and recommendations. Further information from the surveys that is not included in the main text has been provided as supplementary material.     The Bishop’s Chaplain The Bishop of Chelmsford seeks to appoint an Anglican priest to act as Chaplain to assist him in his diocesan role. The Post The role of Bishop’s Chaplain encompasses spiritual, liturgical, executive, pastoral, research and communication responsibilities. The role requires someone with clarity of thought, ability to work on complex issues with tact and diplomacy, an eye for detail as well as an appreciation of wider issues, excellent administrative and interpersonal skills and the capacity to manage and prioritise their workload according to the Bishop’s work agenda. The Chaplain will advise and be a sounding board to the Bishop and work collaboratively with other members of the team. The person appointed will need to be resilient and dependable, impartial and good humoured and have emotional and spiritual intelligence to navigate a varied, challenging and fulfilling ministry.     189 PETER DAWES Evangelical Episcopal Practice Today To be an evangelical bishop is to face a double burden: criticised, as are all bishops, by those beyond the church, many bishops have had to face attack from their evangelical brethren. Peter Dawes offers an account of his own understanding of the most frequent areas of complaint. He defends a proper use of administrative resources, encourages clergy to rely on the informal networks they create as well as the diocesan centre for pastoral support and maintains that there is no case for increasing the number of bishops. Being a bishop is a demanding task in the church. For much of this century the House of Bishops has largely been occupied by Anglo-Catholics and liberals. Only in the last twenty years have there been evangelical bishops in any number. Their arrival on the bench has coincided with a period in our history where the church has been subjected to intense criticism. The bishops have had their share of that. But it is not only by the media and the public that bishops as representatives of the church have been on the receiving end, but from Christians as well. I have decided to look at recent criticisms of bishops and particularly those that have been made by Evangelicals. It seems to me inevitable that in places I have mentionea my own practice but I hope it is not too intrusiVe. Prelacy This criticism came as something of a surprise. The full Oxford English Dictionary defines prelacy as 'government by prelates, bishops (as men of rank), often in a hostile sense', but, curiously, no example is given about what these critics have in mind.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Stirling Online Research Repository 1 British Baptist Crucicentrism since the Late Eighteenth Century David Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling On 24 May 1791 William Carey, soon to become the pioneer of the Baptist Missionary Society, was ordained to the Christian ministry at his meeting house in Harvey Lane, Leicester. His friend Samuel Pearce, minister in Birmingham, preached the evening ordination sermon. Pearce’s text was Galatians 6:14, ‘God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.’ His message was that, as a minister, Carey should concentrate on proclaiming Christ crucified.1 This gathering of Baptists who were about to launch the worldwide mission of the Anglo-American Evangelical churches strongly believed that the cross was the fulcrum of the Christian faith. Andrew Fuller, who had delivered the charge to the people on the day of Carey’s ordination, was of the same mind. In a sermon on a different occasion Fuller insisted that the death of Christ was not so much a portion of the body of Christian doctrine as its life- blood. ‘The doctrine of the cross’, he declared, ‘is the christian doctrine.’2 A similar refrain was sustained by Baptists during the nineteenth century. ‘Of all the doctrines of the gospel’, wrote the contributor of an article on the atonement to the Baptist Magazine in 1819, ‘there is none more important than this’.3 A similar point was made in a more florid way in the same journal eighteen years later.
