The resource guide provides an interdisciplinary perspective on Japanese culture for secondary teachers and students. In addition to suggested classroom activities, there are background readings and notes for the teachers that can be used for enrichment lessons with students. The five chapters focus on: (1) "Literature and Language"; (2) "Education"; (3) "Culture"; (4) "Geography"; and (5)"Social Roles." A section of teaching resources offers a map of Japan, a description of the accompanying slides, a bibliography, and a 15-item videography. The Board of Education had received funding to prepare 12 social studies teachers throughout New York City to become involved in a study and travel program to improve what was taught about Japan in the classrooms. This opportunity changed my academic life. When I changed career paths and joined The American Forum as a Program Director, one of my earliest objectives was to provide other teachers with the same enrichment opportunities I had enjoyed. I was particularly eager to expose educators to the excitement and fun in teaching about Asia. In addition, I felt a strong commitment to develop innovative supplementary materials for secondary school teachers and students. In 1993, The Center for Global Partnership of The Japan Foundation funded The Japan Project of The American Forum, a tri-partite study/travel program. Their generous support allowed us to develop an academic program in collaboration with The City University of New York at Hiroshima, Japan program of Lehman College. Twenty New York educators were selected. The Japan Project began with six in-depth week-end seminars, each focusing on a different aspect of Japanese culture. The seminars included an intensive review of the curriculum materials available on Japan for secondary schools. The second part of the program was a three-week trip to Japan, the first week at the campus of The City University of New York at Hiroshima. The next two weeks involved a demanding travel schedule through three main Japanese islands of Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu. The teachers learned to "ride the rails" on Japan Rail, eat obento lunches, sleep on tatarni mats at ryokans (Japanese inns) and sit on the floor to eat wonderful kaiselei meals.     SAINT SEBASTIAN In his semi-autobiographical novel Confessions of a Mask, the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima described his sexual awakening as a young boy when he came upon a reproduction of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, a painting by the late Renaissance artist Guido Reni. The event is transferred to the fictional narrator, but recalled the actual event that had proved so formative for Mishima. A remarkably handsome youth was bound naked to the trunk of a tree. His crossed hands were raised high, and the thongs binding his wrists were tied to the tree. No other bonds were visible, and the only covering for the youth's nakedness was a coarse white cloth knotted loosely about his loins... Were it not for the arrows with their shafts deeply sunk into his left armpit and right side, he would seem more a Roman athlete resting from fatigue... The arrows have eaten into the tense, fragrant, youthful flesh, and are about to consume his body from within with flames of supreme agony and ecstasy.' The boy's hands embarked on a motion of which he had no experience; he played with his 'toy': "Suddenly it burst forth, bringing with it a blinding intoxication... Some time passed, and then, with miserable feelings I looked around the desk I was facing... There were cloud-splashes about... Some objects were dripping lazily, leadenly, and others gleamed dully, like the eyes of a dead fish. Fortunately, a reflex motion of my hand to protect the picture had saved the book from being soiled. The martyrdom of Saint Sebastian would prove to be a pivotal theme in Mishima’s life and art to which he would return time and time again.

PETITE HISTOIRE D’UNE PERCEPTION FRANÇAISE Il a fallu attendre les années 1920 pour que cette production commence à s’expor- ter épisodiquement. Si l’on excepte quelques pantomimes filmées anonymement, c’est pour la première fois en mars 1926 qu’est présenté au public un film japo- nais dans le mythique Studio des Ursulines, vieux théâtre de quartier reconverti depuis peu en salle d’art et d’essai. Musume (Ai no Himitsu) de Frank Tokunaga fut donc projeté entre un court métrage de René Clair et un autre de Louis Feuillade lors d’une de ces matinées réservées aux membres.
