AVANT-PROPOS L’idée initiale d’un travail sur le personnage de Gavin Hamilton germa du besoin de Monsieur Daniel Roger, responsable des fouilles menées par le Musée du Louvre à Gabies, de disposer d’informations sur l’inventeur du site. Trois axes principaux devaient être étudiés : le réseau de l’antiquaire écossais, ses méthodes de fouilles et ses découvertes. La richesse de la correspondance de l’artiste écossais m’a cependant rapidement aiguillonné vers une étude des représentations structurant sa vision de l’antiquité. De même, son activité de marchand est vite apparue comme essentielle à la compréhension de ses fouilles. De manière générale, la correspondance de Gavin Hamilton publiée par Brendan Cassidy est une source rêvée pour mieux comprendre le milieu des antiquaires romains au XVIIIème siècle. Le lecteur ne doit pas s’attendre à trouver ici des documents inédits. Il me fut en effet impossible de me rendre à Rome ou à Londres afin de consulter les archives y étant conservées. Ce travail repose donc uniquement sur des publications et n’aurait pas pu être réalisé sans les riches ouvrages de Brendan Cassidy et Ilaria Bignamini. Publications rassemblant un ensemble cohérent de documents notamment relatifs aux fouilles de Gavin Hamilton, ces derniers ouvraient la voie à une tentative d’interprétation.     Antonio D'ESTE by Paolo Mariuz - Biographical Dictionary of Italians - Volume 39 (1991) He was born in Venice from Liberale in 1754. In 1769 his presence in the Venetian studio of the sculptor Giuseppe Bernardi, known as Il Torretti, is already documented. In November of the same year he met Antonio Canova, then twelve years old, who entered the same workshop to learn the art of sculpture. Between the two disciples was born a mutual friendship that constituted the most important and most significant relationship in the life of D'Este. In Venice he attended courses at the painting and sculpture academy. In October 1773 (or the following year), as he himself wrote in the Memoirs of Antonio Canova ( published in Florence 1864), he accompanied Canova to Possagno, where he assisted in the creation of the artist's first plastic work, the statue of Eurydice . In Rome, where he remained for the rest of his life, the D. arrived in 1777 in the wake of Giovanni Ferrari, who took over the management of Bernardi in 1774; between the two, contrasts soon arose that led to abandon the Ferrari to enter the workshop of the sculptor Massimiliano Trombetta (Niero, 1969, p30). In 1779 he moved to the study of M. Laboureur (where he remained until 1787). In that same year he married Teresa Arrigoni, as can be deduced from a letter from 18 Ag. 1829 addressed to S. Betti, in which he claims to be married for half a century (Rome, National Bibl., Ms. A 52.3). From the marriage the sons were born Giuseppe (born in Rome on March 19, 1779, Rome, Archbishop of the Vicariate, double positions 71/1804, VI [notary Gaudenzi]), who will dedicate himself to the practice of engraving under the guidance of G.

    GIOVANNI VOLPATO E IL CANTIERE ROMANO Alla fine del Settecento Roma è non solo capitale del Cattolicesimo e sede di una Corte che resta paragone del fasto regale: è anche, e soprattutto, il centro della diffusione della conoscenza dell’antico. Sotto il governo di Pio VI, l’amore per il passato muove passioni e vite, e riunisce nella Città Eterna grand tourists, principi e monarchi, artisti e semplici avventurieri. Tutto sembra ruotare attorno a questi visitatori, che alimentano in primo luogo un vivace mercato dei reperti archeologici, ricercati, restaurati, copiati. Il governo papale da tempo tentava di governare il fenomeno: continua così l’obbligo di richiedere la licenza d’estrazione per chiunque volesse portare pezzi antichi fuori dallo Stato, e nel 1802, regnante Pio VII, arriverà il divieto di vendita all’estero. I papi non si limitano però a vietare: un’epoca di dispersioni di grandi raccolte (negli anni settanta quella Este a Tivoli, e poi Altieri, Capponi, Lante, Negroni) viene trasformata dai pontefici nell’occasione per ampliare le raccolte statali, portando a compimento un processo iniziato più di due secoli prima. Ma è più quello che si comprano i visitatori stranieri: emblematico è il caso degli acquisti di Gustavo III di Svezia durante il suo soggiorno romano del 1783-1784. Uno dei suoi fornitori sarà Giovanni Volpato che gli venderà, tra molto altro, delle versioni di Apollo e le Muse ricomposte da vari frammenti1 in maniera da avvicinarsi il più possibile ai marmi conservati nel Museo Pio Clementino tanto ammirato dal sovrano svedese. Insieme al resto, confluiranno nel Museo delle Antichità di Stoccolma voluto dal fratello Carlo (e reggente per il figlio del re assassinato, Gustavo IV Adolfo) nel 17942: quelle sale, recentemente riallestite così come le dipinse Peter Hilleström nel 1795, restano a esempio dell’amore portato da quegli uomini del Nord al mondo classico.

    Recent Studies of Book Illustration and Engraving, including Cartography, 1985–2016 This bibliography surveys scholarship published between 1985–2016 on engraving, including illustrations, prints, and emblems, as well as cartography, during the long eighteenth century (roughly 1650–1820). The focus is on Europe and the Americas, but some of Asian developments, particularly Japanese, have been included. The bibliography is most inclusive for the years 1990-2014, in consequence of my compiling studies from those years for Section 1— "Printing and Bibliographical Studies"—of the ECCB: The Eighteenth-Century Current Bibliography. A shorter version of this list without cartographic materials appeared in The East- Central Intelligencer, n.s. 15, no. 1 (January 2001), 58-77. Then an intermediate version appeared at Kevin Berland's C18-L website. During 2015–17, I expanded the list four times, with it now reaching 236 pages in typescript. The bibliography includes cartography (particularly the printed products of map-making), but excellent annual surveys of cartographic publications have been compiled by Francis Herbert, Wouter Bracke, and Nick Millea for Imago Mundi (entered under their names below). It lists dissertations and reviews for books. Focused on printed sources, it fails to note some valuable electronic sources, such as Juliette Sodt's website on illustration in botanical books, <www. library.wwu.edu/ref/subjguides/BOTILL.htm>, and many exhibition catalogues posted on the web by museums (only some recent exhibitions are included). Also, some studies in my bibliography of children’s literature at BibSite, as those on chapbooks, could also have been placed into this bibliography on engraving but were not.

Very little is known about the early life of Israhel van Meckenem. His family probably came from Meckenheim near Bonn. He might have received his first artistic training with the so- called Master of the Berlin Passion who was active in the Rhine-Meuse region in 1450–70 (and whom Max Geisberg even tried to identify as Van Meckenem’s father). This is supported by 13 copies that Van Meckenem made after prints by this early “Anonymous.” However, the Master E.S. played an even more important role in the formation of the young artist. He worked in the Upper Rhine valley, most likely in Strasbourg, and his importance for the development of the relatively new medium of engraving can hardly be overestimated.

In this article we will discuss the significance of this term as well as the motivations that drove vast numbers of people to embark on this long journey across Europe. To better contextualize this voyage, we will discuss one unique case to which Spain is a direct witness. Though it has never reached a “tourist” level of interest, the history surrounding this case has afforded us the wonderful opportunity to serve as narrators of this exceptional story.
