A famous 18th-century frigate

HMS Surprise was originally the French corvette Unité, built at Le Havre in 1794 as a 385-ton, 32-gun corvette. But in 1796, it was captured by the British Navy and renamed HMS Surprise. She was armed with an extra four guns and re-classified as a sixth-rate frigate.

She inspired the Aubrey-Maturin series of novels by Patrick O’Brian and featured in the 2003 filmMaster and Commander: The Far Side of the World. ™ www.model-space.com
