The award is named after Jack Cavill, who played a vital supporting role in the early careers of several notable drivers from the 1960s onwards. The prizes are presented at each round by Jack's son John, who has followed in his father's footsteps, helping famous names such as Tim Sugden, Will Power and Anthony Wilds (son of Mike). The 2013 Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup was won by champion Jake Hughes with George Russell claiming the 2014 prize, having taken the award on a tiebreak ahead of his Lanan Racing teammate Arjun Maini. The 2015 winner was Will Palmer. The 2016 winner was Ricky Collard, who claimed four pole position starts across the season. He was tied on four P1 starts with his Carlin teammate Lando Norris but took the award based on a greater number of secondplace starts.
