Press Release PRESS RELEASE - Café De Paris, Hosts Bolanesque 2015 – A unique Fundraising Concert with an Outstanding Live Music Line-Up to Raise Money for The Marc Bolan School of Music Submitted by: Origin Comms Ltd Monday, 24 August 2015 Marc Bolan School of Music fundraising concert: 15th September 2015, Café De Paris, London LONDON, UK – 24 August 2015: The Light of Love UK, the charity established to raise funds for the Marc Bolan School of Music, today announces Bolanesque 2015 – a musical event in London with a global impact. All money raised will go towards building the first Marc Bolan School of Music in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Inspired by the love of Marc Bolan and Motown legend Gloria Jones, this unique fundraising event brings together an outstanding line up of musicians and artists and will take its audience on an intriguing journey through the life of Marc Bolan & Gloria Jones – from Motown to glam rock, to a whole new generation of artists inspired by Marc Bolan’s legacy across the globe. Hosted by Gloria Jones and African TV personality and talk show host, Princess Deun Adedoyin-Solarin, acts such as Tyrannosaurus Jed and Paul Rowan (Marc Bolan tribute artists), Gonzalez (featuring Lenny Zakatek), Linda Lewis, Rough Copy, will all perform on the night alongside northern soul artist Nya King, as well as other popular African artists to be confirmed. Bolanesque 2015 features a selection of Marc Bolan and Gloria Jones hugely memorable hits including “Get it On”, “I Love to Boogie”, “20th Century Boy”, “Children of the Revolution”, and “I haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet” performed by Marc Bolan tribute acts and Warren Sollars from 20th Century Boy – the Musical. The line up of entertainment also includes a homage to Marc Bolan’s obsession to create ‘Music with a Fashion twist’ with a fashion show featuring the Gloria Jones Northern Soul clothing line, designed by top London fashion designers Taetum Jones. All proceeds will go towards building the first Marc Bolan School of Music in West Africa. The charity aims to raise upwards of £40,000 in funds so that the Marc Bolan legacy can live on in a country where children are orphaned, underprivileged, vulnerable and disadvantaged. The first Marc Bolan School of Music is due to open in 2016 in Sierra Leone, West Africa to offer the opportunity for young people to come together to develop their skills and talents in the heart of their community. Taking inspiration from Marc Bolan’s own incredible level of creativity, the school will include an outdoor film school, music rooms, musical instruments, classrooms, a community cinema, a library and an open-air amphitheatre. The Marc Bolan School of Music is a fundraising initiative set up by the Light of Love UK, a charitable organisation founded by Gloria Jones, the 1970s Motown sensation and Marc Bolan’s partner and mother of their son, Rolan. 2. Gloria Jones is one of the most unsung stars from the Motown era of the 1970’s. Amongst numerous other accolades, Gloria recorded the original version of "Tainted Love," which was covered by Soft Cell for a huge international hit in 1982. She was also the girlfriend of British glam rocker Marc Bolan. Gloria is also a huge song writing talent, co-writing with Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross' 1974 hit duet, "My Mistake." In 1974, Jones joined T. Rex as a keyboardist and backing vocalist. Becoming romantically involved with Marc, she also helped sway him into a more soul/dance-oriented direction. Bolan in turn helped her out on her solo album Vixen, playing guitar and writing songs. After having a child, their time together came to a tragic end when Bolan was killed in a car accident in 1977. Gloria also features in the 2013 Oscar winning film “20 Feet from Stardom”, which documents the life of back-up singers such as her who live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight.     Album Review: Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T.Rex (BMG) September 16, 2020 A stellar ensemble of artists which include Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams, Todd Rundgren, Joan Jett, two sons of John Lennon amongst others, lay down a worthy and often inspired double album’s worth of classic Marc Bolan songs. Preceding his induction to the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame later in November this year. Angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection. Alan Ginsberg’s Howl and the Beats were one creative well from which the persona of Marc Bolan arose. He regarded himself as a poet foremost, around which he constructed melodies. Variations on twelve bar blues. Published his collected poems The Warlock of Love in 1969. Sold 40,000 but not well received by some critics. Producer Hal Willner regarded him as a serious writer of the calibre of Kurt Weill, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. He passed away in April this year. Grateful for all his past inuences. Played in skife bands. In a trio with Helen Shapiro. Took notice of Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Dion and the Belmonts. Looked like Dylan for a while. Marc’s father was a Russian Jew. At some point Feld became Bolan. To mirror Chuck Berry, he then became the English Poet of Rock’n’Roll. From 1970 to 1973 he took over from the recently split Beatles in popularity. Appeared in Ringo Starr’s lm Born to Boogie. Started Glam Rock. David Bowie took lessons and came up with Ziggy Stardust. We needed him to give us something to listen to when all that Prog Rock noodling was spilling over.

    Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.
