Kipupisteissä tarkastelee mielen ja ruumiin tuskaa modernisoituvassa Suomessa 1870-luvulta 1940-luvulle. Kipu oli paitsi yksilöllistä myös jaettua: se jäsentyy suhteessa arvoihin, maailmankuvaan, kulttuuriin ja historialliseen aikaan. Monitieteisessä kokoelmassa luetaan rinnan kaunokirjallisuutta, kuvataidetta, ruumiinavauspöytäkirjoja, kirjeitä, omaelämä- kertoja ja potilasasiakirjoja. Sairaus ja kipu ovat muutakin kuin bio- ja lääketiedettä, ne voivat myös olla identiteetin rakenta- misen positiiviseksi kääntyvä puoli. Kipupisteissä tekee näkyväksi sen, miten erilaisia ja risteäviä sairastamisen ”tarinat” moderni- soituvassa Suomessa olivat. Historiaa ja taiteentutkimusta tuoreella tavalla yhdistävä teos avaa sairauksien kulttuurista tutkimusta kohti kuviteltua, kerrottua ja tunteiden historiaa. Pitääkö minun näin usein saada opetus siinä, että oppisin kunnioittamaan terveyttä. Voi, vielä jouluaattonakin saan kulkea laahustella kainalosauvoin, jouluna — riemun juhlana! (Elämän auetessa 137) Näin kirjoitti koulutyttö Saima Harmaja päiväkirjaansa joulukuussa 1926. Murtunut pohjeluu oli kipsattu ja paranemassa, mutta se tuotti edelleen kipua. Kolmetoistavuotias Saima kuvasi sitä Maijalle, päiväkir- jansa puhetoverille, todeten, että ”[y]ö maanantaita vasten oli helvetil- linen. Oli kuin jalkani ympärillä olisi ollut tuliset pihdit, jotka leveinä puristivat sitä milloin enemmän, milloin vähemmän” (Elämän auetessa 136). Kipsattu jalka eristi yksinäisyyteen ja tuotti alakuloa, mutta sairas- tamisessa oli myös hyvät puolensa. Onnettomuus oli sattunut Saiman hyppiessä poikien kanssa lumikinosten yli, ja kun tapauksesta kuultiin koulussa, erityisesti poikien kunnioitus häntä kohtaan kasvoi. Kuten si- taatti osoittaa, sairastamiselle saatettiin etsiä merkitystä myös niin, että se nähtiin oikeiden arvojen palauttajana ja sielun jalostumisen mahdol- lisuutena. Tässä artikkelikokoelmassa käsitellään mielen ja ruumiin kipua ja tuskaa modernisoituvassa Suomessa 1870-luvulta 1940-luvulle. Kes- 7 • Tunnetta ja tietoa, tuskaa ja hurmosta kiössä on sairastava yksilö ja niiden ihmisten maailma, jotka sairastivat, kokivat kivun ja elivät sitä. Yksilöllinen, koettu kipu on kuitenkin aina sidoksissa yhteiseen, jaettuun ja kulttuuriseen. Tämän vuoksi käsitte- lemme sairautta suhteessa arvoihin, maailmankuvaan ja ympäröivään kulttuuriin. Kirjamme nimi Kipupisteissä viittaa metaforisessa merkityksessään modernisoituvan Suomen kivuliaisiin kohtiin (ks. myös Ahlbeck et al. 2013). Tarkastelemme suomalaista kulttuuria sairautta koskevan puheen – erilaisten tekstien ja kuvien – ja huonovointisuudelle sekä erilaisille vaivoille annettujen kulttuuristen merkitysten kautta. Aineistonamme on kuvataidetta samoin kuin kaunokirjallisuutta tyttökirjallisuudes- ta naistaiteilijaromaaneihin ja alkoholismia tematisoiviin romaaneihin. Analysoitaviin teksteihin kuuluu ruumiinavauspöytäkirjoja, perhear- kistoista löytyvää kirjeenvaihtoa, omaelämäkerrallisia sairastamisen ta- rinoita ja sairaala-arkistojen potilasasiakirjakokonaisuuksia. Teoksemme kantavana ajatuksena on paitsi monitieteinen dialo- gi myös näiden edellä mainittujen, erilaisten aineistojen hyödyntämi- nen laajan kulttuurisen analyysin mahdollistamiseksi. Eri yhteiskunnan ja kulttuurin tahot osallistuivat sairastamista koskevaan keskusteluun eri tavoin – niillä oli erilaiset ”äänensä”. Moniäänisyys tuo esiin ambiva- lenssin, mikä tarkoittaa esimerkiksi sitä, että sairautta ei suinkaan nähty aina vain kielteisenä asiana. Sairaus ja kipu ovat aineistossamme muuta- kin kuin bio- ja lääketiedettä ja lääketieteellisten toimenpiteiden tar- vetta: kivun ja sairauden kirjallisissa ja kuvallisissa esityksissä sairaus ei aina ole uhka tai tyrannisoija vaan identiteetin rakentamisen positiivi- seksi kääntyvä osa. Sairastaminen voi kuulua paitsi tiedon myös tunteen maailmaan. Aineistomme psykiatrisissa teksteissä poikkeava oirehtimi- nen näyttäytyy (mieli)sairautena, kun taas kirjallisuudessa tai omaelä- mäkerroissa sairaus oli monisyisempi ja henkilökohtaisempi, kivulias ja identiteettiä uhkaava. Paitsi aineistot myös kirjoittamisen lajit ja taiteen virtaukset vaikuttavat siihen, miten sairautta kuvataan esimerkiksi ku- vataiteessa tai miten siitä kirjoitetaan. Omaelämäkerrassa kuvattu sai- raus poikkeaa taas fiktiossa kuvatusta, sillä fiktiolla ei ole omaelämäker- ran moraalista imperatiivia kertoa sairaudesta totuudenmukaisesti, jot- ta kokijan kärsimys otettaisiin todesta (Mintz 2013, 82). 8 • Tunnetta ja tietoa, tuskaa ja hurmosta ”Nainen ja hulluus” – feministisen tutkimusperinteen pitkä linja Monissa kirjamme artikkeleissa on keskeisenä psyykkinen sairastami- nen, mutta somaattisetkin sairaudet ovat läsnä monissa artikkeleissa, emmekä halua tehdä tiukkaa erottelua fyysisen ja psyykkisen sairasta- misen välillä. Psyykkinen sairastuminen voi tuntua ruumiilliselta, ja mielitaudeillekin etsittiin aikanaan usein somaattisia syitä. Esimerkiksi teoksessamme esiin nouseva tuberkuloosi oli henkistävä, myös ”sielulli- sessa” olemisessa näkyvä sairaus siinä missä psyykkisin sairauksiin, kuten maanis-depressiiviseen psykoosiin, kuului vahvoja ruumiillisia oireita. On kuitenkin monta syytä, miksi juuri mielenterveys tai mielen ka- riutuminen nousee tärkeäksi. Ajan taiteessa ja tieteessä sekä ihmisten yksityisessä kirjeenvaihdossa etenkin naisten psyykkinen sairastaminen ja henkiset kärsimykset olivat toistuva teema, mikä osoittaa, että mie- lenterveysongelmat puhuttelivat. Hermostuneisuudesta ja hulluudes- ta keskusteltiin, se kiehtoi ja kiinnosti mutta myös pelotti ja askarrut- ti ihmisiä. Lisäksi tilastot osoittavat, että mielisairaiksi diagnosoitujen ja hoitoon määrättyjen ihmisten määrä nousi 1900-luvun alkupuolella. Tämä johti siihen, että psyykkisestä sairastamisesta tuli meillä kansalli- nen ongelma ja yleinen keskustelunaihe. (Esim. Harjula 1996.) Tämä heijastaa yleisempää länsieurooppalaista kehitystä, jossa mielisairaa- lapotilaiden määrä oli kasvussa 1800-luvun lopulta lähtien (Porter & Wright 2003). Huomion keskittäminen psyykkiseen sairastamiseen on joidenkin tämän kirjan kirjoittajien kohdalla myös ollut tietoinen valinta; nais- ten hulluus on kiinnostanut jo lähtökohtaisesti sekä teoreettisesti että aineiston valinnan kautta. Tämä siksi, että psyykkisen sairastamisen his- toriassa yhdistyvät mielenkiintoisella tavalla sukupuolen ja luokan mo- ninaiset merkitykset, jotka myös ovat kirjamme keskiössä. Feministises- sä tutkimuksessa on hahmotettu 1800-luvun patriarkaalisen psykiatrian synnyn myötä muotoutunutta symbolista, kulttuurista ja yhteiskun- nallista kytköstä naiseuden ja mielenterveyden välillä (Chesler

    “It was delightful to be so hungry”: Food, Class and Gender in Nineteenth-Century Children’s Literature by Samantha Christensen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Samantha Christensen, 2014 ii Abstract This thesis explores the social, political, and spatial extensions of food and eating in nineteenth-century young women’s coming-of-age texts in America. It focuses on novels and short-stories from women authors such as Louisa May Alcott, Susan Coolidge, Eleanor H. Porter, and Sarah Jewett in order to unpack both young women’s and young men’s complex relationships to food while examining the culture that shapes restrained, social eaters. This research is grounded in textual representations of the complex framework of nineteenth-century girls and young women in the kitchen, along with boys and young men in domestic eating spaces, while engaging with the social and political significance of the spaces in which these characters eat and cook. Chapter One discusses the ways in which boys in Alcott’s Under the Lilacs and Little Women series, along with Dorry in Coolidge’s What Katy Did, struggle to adopt appropriate relationships to food and their appetites—relationships that guide them into successful futures as ideally masculine men. Throughout these texts—novels targeted toward girls and young women in the nineteenth century—young male characters struggle to negotiate their identities as enthusiastic eaters of female-prepared food with social pressures to develop into hardworking, masculine men in control of their appetites.
