Street Art Festival Benalla April 2017 Street Art Festival BENALLA APRIL 2017 WELCOME WELCOME 49 Murals WELCOME Wall To Wall Wall To Wall To Wall Wall To 35 Artists Welcome to Wall To Wall Festival 2017 It is an honour to return once again to Benalla for a third consecutive year, to take the reigns as the Wall to Wall Festival Artistic Director. 1 Location Although the festival began with very humble roots, in just a few short years it is now widely regarded as one of the most important annual street art events in the country. BENALLA This year’s program is something that our whole team is very proud of and we can’t wait to experience it with you during the festival weekend. The festival would not be possible without the generous support of Creative Victoria, Festivals Australia, Benalla Rural City Council, Benalla Street Art Committee and of course, the kind and generous people of Benalla. Long-time supporters of the Australian street art community, Sandra Powell and Andrew King have curated for the Benalla Art Gallery an exhibition of works by two of Australia’s most prominent street artists, Rone and Adnate. Sandra and Andrew, aka SANDREW, play an active support role in both artist’s careers and the works in this exhibition are from their collection from their rebellious beginnings on the streets of Melbourne, Rone and Adnate attribute SANDREW with helping to guide them and launch their highly-successful art careers in Australia and internationally. Located just 15 minutes from Benalla is the small farming town of Goorambat. In the town centre lies the Goorambat Uniting Church. Artist Adnate, who has long been inspired by the works and artists of the renaissance period, will create his own work inspired by the era inside the church. Mural projects, festivals, and street artworks are said to foster feelings of belonging, recognition, and connection to a place. More than this, street art is increasingly used in place-branding and in commercial transactions. This article poses some questions about the implications of the way that street art relates to place and both makes and unmakes spaces of connection and disconnection. It will begin with the use of street artwork to sell property development, identifying this as a contemporary characteristic of the now well-known relationship between art and gentrification. As a counterpoint to the commercialisation of the sense of place generated by street art, it examines the work of artists such as Ian Strange, Francis Alÿs, and Stanislava Pinchuk, who make art located in displacement, dislocation, and dispossession. For the last five years, I’ve been thinking about the impact that Instagram has had on graffiti and street art. I grew up in the graffiti scene in the 1980s and ‘90s. We had no technology in the way that we do today. No mobile phones, no internet. So, like many of us, I’ve lived through a transition where art forms like graffiti, and later street art – which emerged on the cusp of the digital revolution – have now shifted into a space where we are drenched in forms of media culture. This is not a pro-Instagram talk, but as a scholar and as someone who makes art on the streets, I’ve become fascinated with how Instagram has reorganised aspects of street art culture and also how it has made visible some things that were previously invisible. My new book, Instafame, looks at the top 100 accounts for street art and graffiti. It gives a broader theoretical concept to this digital shift and it looks in detail at the kind of data that is produced by Instagram.
