Alfred Harrison Living in Sneinton at the time, Alfred Harrison attended the Bluecoat School at the Mansfield Road site between 1949 and 1956. After successfully completing his Sixth Form studies, and reaching the position of Head Boy, he won a scholarship to read Economics at Christ’s College, Cambridge. He subsequently pursued a highly successful career in financial management in Canada and the USA. He is currently Vice President of Alliance Capital, a major North American fund management company based in Minnesota in the United States. Alfred was one of our most important benefactors in Bluecoat’s Tercentenary Appeal, gifting £1 million towards what is now known as the Alfred Harrison Building. Alfred remains in regular contact with the school and kindly agreed to be the main sponsor for the Awards Event.

Message from Alfred Harrison: At the age of 80 it still seems but yesterday that I arrived, as a very poor 12 year old student from a working class family, to the Bluecoat School on Mansfield Road. When I look back on the 7 following years I have always been conscious of how much I owe to those dedicated teachers whose consistent support and encouragement enabled me to strive for meaningful goals and always keep an enquiring mind. I especially would note a course that involved English précis taught by Mr Exley. You had to read a few pages and then condense the essence of what you had read into a single paragraph. At the time I am not sure I appreciated that this is what life is all about, being able to seek out what is key amongst a ton of information. This lesson was critical in my university years and my over 40 years managing One word if I may to the students investments in the United States. It has led me to read broadly and follow many diverse interests. The ball is in your court. You are the one who determines while at school what the future might hold for you. Enjoy your sports and time on social media. But life can be rich if you go at it with worthy goals and a driving passion. Your teachers are there to help you in every way. Alfred Harrison

Krissie Dickens (Bluecoat Primary Academy) Krissie joined the Trust as an NQT almost 3 years ago and is progressing well in her career, taking on some early leadership roles. She works hard to ensure she delivers effective lessons to her classes – always looking for ways to find interesting stimuli to promote learning. Krissie has high expectations for her children but builds good relationships and uses praise and reward well to encourage the children to behave well and do their best. These relationships have led to her receiving this nomination for inspirational teacher from the children at the Primary who have said that she is sweet, fun and kind and helpful to children who need it. They also accurately identified her enthusiasm for teaching Maths.

Matt Irons (Nottingham Emmanuel School) Having been year leader for a number of years, Matt took on leadership of a year group as they came to the end of Year 9 and whose existing year leader left to pursue ordination. Matt set about instilling a positive culture of hard work and learning amongst the students. The year group is projected to perform well in summer 2019, perhaps returning Emmanuel's first positive Progress 8 score after a journey of improvement. Matt is both enormously supportive of students, being first to recognise progress and celebrate students' successes with them, but equally swift and unrelenting in the standards he expects from his year group. Matt is embarking on a new role as Director of Achievement in summer 2018, continuing to have oversight of the year group he has invested in, but taking on a greater focus on student progress and supporting other year leaders in their work.

James Gilder (Bluecoat Wollaton Academy) James joined the Trust in September 2017 as an NQT. The quality of his lessons is always engaging and inspiring as well as thoroughly well planned, personalised for a wide variety of learners and effectively assessed. He is a great addition to our family of staff. Charlotte Keeble (Bluecoat Aspley Academy) Since joining the Academy Charlotte has shown that she is fully committed and dedicated to her role. She is a hard worker who has built strong relationships with her year group in a relatively short space of time. Charlotte’s nominations continuously talk about how kind and understanding she is, as well as how she helps her students when they are going through difficult times. They have also spoken about how she helps them in after school classes and that she is always there for them. One student said that Charlotte is the first person that she will go to because they trust her, another says she has helped her with ‘everything’ and another mentions how valuable her mentoring and support is. One quote said it all really, “She is my guardian angel”.
