Montgomery’s Anne Books Hilary Emmett “Anne, you have talked even on for ten minutes by the clock,” said Marilla. “Now, just for curiosity’s sake, see if you can hold your tongue for the same length of time.” ~ Anne of Green Gables (93) “I was often very hungry before I came to Green Gables—at the orphanage…and before. I’ve never cared to talk of those days.” ~ Anne of Ingleside (245) When the orphaned Anne has mistakenly, but fortuitously, been left at Bright River station, the very first thing we learn about her is that she has, in the words of the stationmaster, “a tongue of her own, that’s for certain” (11). From this moment, Anne’s interaction with every new person she meets is characterized by her ceaseless chatter and her comical employment of all sorts of “big words” to express her even bigger ideas (15). Yet while Lucy Maud Montgomery’s series of Anne novels continually draw attention to her heroine’s prodigious gifts of verbal and written expression, there are some notable scores on which Anne remains if not precisely silent, then, at the very least, tongue-tied. In this chapter, I explore that which is repressed by the irrepressible Anne. Although repressed, ideas and events deemed unspeakable by Anne and her intimates nevertheless insinuate their way into their discourse and are eventually given textual enunciation. Traumatic events in the Anne novels present particular obstacles to free expression. Much is left unsaid in Montgomery’s rendering of such circumstances as Anne’s miserable childhood before she came to Green Gables, and her responses to the deaths which frame the series: that of her beloved father-figure Matthew in the first novel, and that of her son Walter, in the series’ final installment, Rilla of Ingleside.

Lucy Maud Montgomery Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, in 1874. Educated at Prince Edward College, Charlottetown, and Dalhousie University, she embarked on a career in teaching. From 1898 until 1911 she took care of her maternal grandmother in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, and during this time wrote many poems and stories for Canadian and American magazines. Montgomeryʼs first novel, Anne of Green Gables, met with immediate critical and popular acclaim, and its success, both national and international, led to seven sequels. Montgomeryʼs later trilogy of novels about another island orphan, Emily Byrd Starr is more autobiographical than the books about Anne. In 1911, Montgomery married the Rev. Ewan Macdonald, a Presbyterian clergyman, and they lived in Ontario, where he was the pastor of parishes in Leaskdale and, later, in Norval. They retired to Toronto in 1936. Montgomery Collection in the Forest City Canada's National Book Collecting Contest Entry By: Vanessa Brown Collecting Montgomery by Vanessa Brown Collecting the work of Lucy Maud Montgomery--one of Canada's most important authors--is a sometimes challenging, but always rewarding vocation. It is a project that is dear to my heart, and one that I find endlessly fascinating. My books and ephemera are kept in my library, some on shelves and some behind glass, creating a haven I can retreat to and revel in the writings of my favourite contributor to our national literature. My primary interest is collecting rare first editions of Montgomery's work, but the complicated publishing history of her books, and influences of her life upon the reading of her work, have naturally led me to adopt a wider scope in my acquisitions. In addition to collectible editions by Montgomery, I now also includes rare or valuable editions of secondary material such as critical study, autobiography, letters, poetry and ephemera. As a passionate reader of Montgomery's works as well as a collector, I also maintain reading copies, including some of the critical works, in less valuable editions. The final aspect of my collection involves the Cavendish Library editions of Montgomery's works, which are not particularly valuable, but are a challenge to find and look lovely on my shelf with their brightly coloured dust jackets. As I am sure is true of any collector, I find that my taste evolves as time goes by. I have learned lessons from collecting that have made me more discriminate about volumes I take into my collection, but I have also experienced the regret of passing up an item and not being able to replace it.

This book has many moral values that are important for us to remember in living our lives. One of the characteristics of literature is being written by the author to leave some messages behind. The message can exist in any form. The author might try to leave more than one message when he/she is writing the literary work. The form can be the setting of the story, the plot of the story, or maybe the moral values of the story. In this research, the writer is interested in analyzing the literary work entitled Anne of Green Gables, to find out the messages that the author tries to deliver. Anne of Green Gables is one of the best works that can attract the attention of many people.

On the Novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery Abstract This paper deals with the issue of “utopianism” in L.M. Montgomery’s novel Anne of Green Gables (1908), a book which has been translated into Polish many times and has been shaping the worldview and mentality of Polish female readers for over a century. This utopianism is here presented in three separate approaches. Firstly, the study investigates the “translatological utopianism” of the first translation of the novel (by R. Bernstein, published in 1911), which, as a result of the linguistic and stylistic decisions of the translator, has been significantly naturalised and domesticised, as well as adapted to the multiple (genological, social, and cultural) expectations and concep- tions of the Polish implied audience. Secondly, attention was drawn to the fact that Avonlea as presented in the novel is a kind of social “matriarchal utopia”, emphasis- ing the issues of women’s solidarity, responsibility, and education, at the same time strongly referring to the Arcadian trend in utopian literature. Thirdly, it was suggested that in Moira Walley-Beckett’s film adaptationAnne of Green Gables (Anne with an E, 2017-2018), the reading “between the lines” of Montgomery’s novel and the applica- tion of the hermeneutics of suspicion by the screenwriter made the idyllic utopia of the original resemble a dystopia.
