Masters Courses and Dissertations in Modern and Contemporary History at Portuguese Universities Masters Courses and Dissertations in Modern and Contemporary History at Portuguese Universities The offering of Masters Degree courses in Modern and Contemporary Portuguese History (nineteenth and twentieth centuries) began in the 1980s, when several Portuguese universities created a considerable number of graduate programs in various fields. The list of dissertations presented below provides an overall view of the results of the addition of courses devoted to Modern and Contemporary History, with the exception of courses organized by the Faculty of Letters at the University of Coimbra and by both the Sociology Department and Philosophy Department at the New University of Lisbon, which will be added to this list in due course. Dissertations in Modern and Contemporary History have also been produced in the context of graduation programs in other fields, such as European Studies, African Studies, International Relations, Political Science and Sociology. The dissertations cover a wide variety of themes, and deal with several sub-disciplinary approaches, focusing on areas such as historical demography, social, economic, urban and rural, military, religious, political, and cultural history. This collection of dissertations on the whole represents a well-balanced, accumulated body of knowledge that has indisputably contributed to the development and enhancement of the historiographical field of Modern and Contemporary Portuguese History. By listing these dissertations it is our purpose to better acquaint the reader with works that in many cases have not been published. The list is organized in alphabetical order by the author’s name, indicating both the year and university of origin. When applicable, the reference to publication is also included. The editors of e-JPH gratefully acknowledge the information provided by Fernando Rosas (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, New University of Lisbon), Jorge Fernandes Alves (Faculty of Letters, University of Oporto), Sérgio Campos de Matos (Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon), Norberta Amorim, José Capela and Lúcia Azevedo (University of Minho), Maria de Fátima Nunes (University of Évora), and José Pedro Paiva (Faculty of Letters, University of Coimbra), Maria Isabel João (Open University) and João Luís Lisboa (CHC, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, New University of Lisbon) List of Dissertations in Modern and Contemporary Portuguese History Adrião, Alexandra Antunes e, A arquitectura de veraneio e o palácio Anjos em Algés, perspectivas de intervenção e reutilização, Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, 2003.

  • The Engine of the Republic: the Presidential Cars PRESENTATION
The Engine of the Republic: The Presidential Cars PRESENTATION The museum collection The Engine of the Republic – The Presidential Cars came about as a result of a challenge issued by the Museum of Transport and Communications to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The challenge, which was immediately accepted, was to create a permanent exhibit that would make it possible for the public to visit, assembled and preserved, one of the most important collections of cars in the country: those that have been in the service of its presidents since the founding of the Republic, over 100 years ago. This collection also reflects an awareness that the vehicles exhibited here are part of a historical heritage. As such, they are no longer disposed of once decommissioned, but become part of the collection of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The job of recording, locating and recovering the cars that were used by the presidents of the Republic, an ongoing task, has been a priority of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic practically since its inception, as already demonstrated by a group of temporary exhibitions: beginning in 2004, to coincide with the opening of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic, and continuing over the course of subsequent years, in Porto, Lisbon, Figueira da Foz and Guimarães. Siting this collection in Porto also contributes to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic’s aim of decentralising its activity, bringing part of its collection to the north of the country, a region with a great tradition of car collecting.

NATIONAL PALACE OF BELÉM Classified as a national monument in 2007, Belém Palace became the seat of the presidency after 1910. With a history spanning more than five centuries, Belém Palace has served as the official residence of the President of the Republic since the election of the first President, Manuel de Arriaga. In the mid-sixteenth century, D. Manuel of Portugal, a figure of the Portuguese Renaissance, constructed the main building of the palace on land leased to monks from the Order of St. Jerome. In 1726, the property was acquired by King João V to serve as his holiday residence and remained in the royal family's possession until 1908. From then on, guardianship was entrusted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which used Belém Palace to host visiting foreign officials until the foundation of the Republic in 1910. • A British Military Officer's View of Portugal's Revolution of 1917
WAR ABROAD AND WAR WITHIN: A BRITISH MILITARY OFFICER’S VIEW OF PORTUGAL’S REVOLUTION OF 1917 António Lopes Universidade do Algarve CETAPS General Nathaniel Walter Barnardiston (1858-1919), who first set foot in Lisbon in August 1916 as the Chief of the British military mission to Portugal, became a privileged witness to some of the most important events that marked that which Fernando Rosas (2007) called “the intermittent civil war”, triggered by the regicide on 1 February 1908 and which characterized the whole period of the First Republic. In the end of July 1916, he was appointed Chief of the British Military Mission to Portugal, where he was commissioned to supervise the training of the Portuguese troops for the war on the Western Front. He wrote reports on the political and military situation of the country and kept a diary where he recorded events and his impressions of the people he met and the parts of the country he visited. This article aims to contextualize Barnardiston’s mission and to present not only his views on Sidónio Pais’s coup in December 1917, but also the opinion that he entertained of the Portuguese in general. 1. On the verge of ungovernability: the first period of the First Republic (1910- 1917) If, shortly after the revolution of October 1910, people could still harbour some hope in the country's political regeneration, the fact is that, after the adoption of the Constitution of 1911, the glow of the Republican promise gradually gave way to a feeling of disappointment and dismay. The country was permanently embroiled in political disputes and plots, some of them culminating in bloody armed uprisings.
