Students An Invitation to the most anticipated event of the year... — "Martini Bar" --- —Iguana Cantina -— Thanksgiving Eve Bash While many students were enjoying Halloween Horror Nights or the Keys over Fall Break this year, I found myself on a Wednesday, Nov. 21. plane en route to College Station, TX with the President of the Honor Council. Sounds a lot like Halloween horror you say'' Well, to tell you the truth, it wasn't all that bad I actually ended up enjoying myself, and I learned that Mr President and I had a lot more in common than I thought we did. As representatives of the University of Miami Honor Council, we were heading to Texas A&M for the annual confer ence of the Center for Academic Integrity This weekend would be about learning new methods of maintaining a culture of acade mic integrity on our campus, as well as ideas on how to imple ment those techniques The University of Miami has been a fore runner in the Center for Academic Integrity since it was estab lished in 1990 Over 100 students and 200 faculty and adminis trators trom institutions across the country were in attendance to share their viewpoints and to gain insight from others Workshops were held on topics ranging from "Is Cheating a Victimless Crime9" and "Ethics in Business and Society," to "Academic Integrity and Moral Development" and Student Cheating and Plagiarism in the Internet Era." Ten years worth of research on why students cheat and how often was presented by the Founding President of CAI, Dr Donald McCabe. He also reported on the influence of enforced honor codes on campuses, and his findings were solid reinforcement of our program here at UM. President Gary Kausmeyer and I had the opportunity to present our material to other schools, and it was quite apparent that the University of Miami is nationally recognized as a promi nent institution for nurturing students that possess a high degree of academic as well as personal integrity We were approached often with questions about how our Honor Code system operates, and we explained our Honor Council's policy of "Education, than Adjudication " We are 22 undergraduate students from all col leges and classes, very visible and active in many campus orga nizations, and extremely dedicated to the cause of fostering an atmosphere of fair competition on campus We're working to make the value of your degree higher every year, and you can count on those who follow us to do the same.
