Due to its biological and social functions, sex has a profound impact on an individual‟s physical and psychological health. Risky sexual behavior may have particularly harmful consequences, including contracting HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections, lowered self-esteem, unwanted pregnancy, and the experience of social stigma. There are moral battles fought over sex education or abstinence only programs, yet what exactly is understood by the word “sex” is often left to the interpretation of the individual. In fact, although evidence suggests that there is a high level of agreement indicating that both penile-vaginal and anal intercourse are considered “having sex,” this consensus does not extend to other behaviors, such as oral sex (Randall & Byers, 2003; Trotter & Alderson, 2007). Several factors are believed to influence variations in definitions of sex, including perceptions of behavioral appropriateness, the level of commitment in a relationship, and gender. -
Compassionate Love for Close Others and Humanity
03_sprecher_056439 (jk-t) 29/9/05 1:42 pm Page 629 Compassionate love for close others and humanity Susan Sprecher Illinois State University Beverley Fehr University of Winnipeg ABSTRACT A compassionate love scale was developed that can be used, in alternative forms, to assess compassionate or altruistic love for different targets (e.g., close others and all of humankind). Using three samples (total N = 529), the Compas- sionate Love scale was developed and piloted. Three studies (total N = 700) were then conducted to provide validation of the scale and to examine correlates of compassionate love. In support of our predictions, compassionate love was found to be associated positively with prosocial behavior, as directed both to close others and to all of humanity. Those who were more religious or spiritual experienced more compassionate love than those who were less religious or spiritual. Evidence was found that compassionate love is distinct from empathy. In the final study, we introduced a relationship-specific version of the Compassionate Love scale, and found that compassionate love for a specific close other was associated with the provision of social support for that person. This research has focused primarily on defining and operational- izing love and the examination of its predictors, correlates, and outcomes within romantic relationships (for a review, see S. S. Hendrick & Hendrick, 2000). Love for close others such as family and friends, for peripheral ties, and for all of humanity has generally not been a topic of investigation. -

As we move from infancy to adolescence and adolescence to adulthood, there are many sexual milestones. While adolescent sexuality is a time in which sexual maturation, interest and experience surge, adult sexuality continues to be a time of sexual unfolding. It is during this time that people consolidate their sexual orientation and enter into their first mature, and often long term, sexual relationships. This movement towards mature sexuality also has a number of gender-specific issues as males and females often experience sexuality differently. As people age, these differences are often marked. In addition to young and middle age adults, the elderly are often an overlooked group when it comes to discussion of sexuality. Sexuality, however, continues well into what are often considered the golden years. This course will review the development of sexuality using a lifespan perspective. Sex Differences in Affective Responses to Homoerotic Stimuli: Evidence for an Unconscious Bias Among Heterosexual Men, but Not Heterosexual Women

Hutchison, Ph.D.1 Received February 25, 2004; revisions received June 25, 2004 and August 24, 2004; accepted October 30, 2004 Antigay bias is a well-documented social problem among heterosexual men, though heterosexual women display a lesser tendency toward this bias. Startle eye blink has been established as a valid measure of the affective component of antigay bias in heterosexual men. In the current study, a sample of 91 heterosexual women and 87 heterosexual men were exposed to a variety of sexual photographic stimuli accompanied by startle probes. Heterosexual men who expressed more bias against gay men using a social distance measure (i.e., discomfort with being in close quarters with a gay man) displayed a startle response consistent with greater negative affect (e.g., fear and disgust) toward gay male stimuli, while those with less self-reported antigay bias did not display a physiological bias against gay men, and none of these men showed a relationship between bias against lesbians and physiological responses while viewing lesbian images. There were no such physiological manifestations of antigay bias in heterosexual women while viewing lesbian or gay male images, even among those who self-reported such bias. It appears that heterosexual women do not tend to have the same affective response toward homosexuals that some heterosexual men experience. -

COTTON Abstract In this study, the authors have examined the masturbation practices of both male and female college students, attempting to test some of the premises long held that men and women differ significantly in such prac- tices. The findings indicate that while there are differences in many of the variables examined, there are others which show striking similarities. Thus, they open to question a number of assumptions held regarding differences in sexual needs and responses of males and females. Introduction The theoretical framework for this study has its basis in the early studies of Kinsey, Pomeroy, and Martin (1948). These first studies sought to document factually and statistically masturbation practices in this country. Though innovative, these studies have become out- dated and limited in light of contemporary developments. -

A Secretly Sexualized Era Pornography and Erotica in the 19th Century Anglo-American World CATHERINE J. ROSE When Margaret Thatcher, in her election campaign of 1983, made the term “Victorian Values” a household expression, she was met with considerable derision from her Labour opponents and more progressive Britons, who undoubtedly conjured images of ladies in corsets and high collars, gentlemen in white tie, parlous games and high society sitting down to afternoon tea.1 However, it was also the Victorian period that brought us Dracula, Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper, absinthe, and séances. Clearly, there was a fascination with the forbidden in Victorian popular culture, and a strong undercurrent of eroticism beneath the outer veneer of respectability. One of the elements of the period that best demonstrates this is the overwhelming production and consumption of pornography, made possible largely through the new medium of photography. At the same time, the erotic literature that had scandalised eighteenth-century European culture remained popular, both in the form of the common novel and in more “underground” erotica, such as the works of the Marquis de Sade. -

Jesus was the preacher of that sermon, and He said some pretty mind-blowing things. In the first study we read how Jesus said the whole Old Testament centered around Him. Imagine some preacher telling you that in this day and age. Your reaction might be something like that of the kids in this video whose parent hadn’t told them the identity of Darth Vader. Hint: It’s not just going to be mind-blowing; it’s going to be completely counter-cultural! But first, let’s be a little counter-cultural ourselves and open in prayer. [Leader prays.] Part 1: MURDER, HATRED, REVENGE AND ANGER [Reader: person with the longest hair)] Here’s what Jesus’ had to say about murder in the Sermon on the Mount: “You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell. So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the alter in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the alter. -

5. EMOTIONS: TAMING THE DESTRUCTIVE AND CULTIVATING BALANCE Chapter Overview As the title states, this chapter is about emotions, how to reduce destructive emotions and cultivate helpful emotions. To begin with we will look at what we mean by emotions and explore what we know of emotions from a contemporary scientific perspective and a traditional Buddhist perspective. The chapter will outline how mindfulness can be used to balance our emotions and short circuit dysfunctional emotions. We will explore anger, fear, sadness and happiness in detail and how mindfulness can be used to understand and balance these emotions. The chapter will conclude by offering some strategies for working with painful emotions. What are emotions? The word emotion originates from the Latin "emovere", which means to disturb. The first part of the word, "e" means “out”, and “movere” translates as “to move”. When we need to function effectively in a demanding world, emotions move us to action. There is no direct Pali equivalent for the term “emotion”. Rather emotions are understood as a combination of physical sensations, feelings (vedana), states of heart-mind (citta) and mental and physical patterns. Emotions involve complex body-mind interactions. Emotions are necessary for our personal development, survival and thriving as a human being. They save lives, motivate behaviour and help us form relationships. Balanced emotions are essential for effective communication and the welfare and wellbeing of our families and communities. Unfortunately emotions can be unbalanced, dysfunctional, painful and destructive. At times, emotions can move us to act unskilfully with dire consequences. Emotions can arise and pass relatively quickly. -
