'Ehrenberg's Redstart' From the Rarities Committee’s files The identification of male ‘Ehrenberg’s Redstart’, with comments on British claims Brian J. Small Brian J. Small ABSTRACT A BBRC review of British claims of ‘Ehrenberg’s Redstart’ Phoenicurus phoenicurus samamisicus found that the degree of variation within both samamisicus and the nominate form of Common Redstart P. phoenicurus was poorly understood.The review established the degree of overlap between males of these taxa and the findings are presented here.The prominent and extensive white wing-panel is unique to adult samamisicus and is not shared with either first-winter samamisicus or adult phoenicurus.The plumage of first-winter samamisicus appears more advanced than that of first-winter phoenicurus, and can closely match the appearance of adult phoenicurus in autumn.Those adult phoenicurus which show a white wing-panel on the tertials and inner secondaries may be safely separable from first-winter samamisicus only by loral colour (solidly black in the former, fringed paler in the latter) and the absence of moult contrast in the greater coverts. As part of the assessment process, it became apparent that our lack of understanding of the appearance of samamisicus was preventing accurate record assessment. With a view to establishing criteria by which samamisicus could be David Pearson separated from the nominate form (hereafter referred to as phoenicurus), BBRC carried out a detailed investigation to establish whether samamisicus is diagnosable, and also to what extent the appearance of phoenicurus can vary and overlap with samamisicus. The samamisicus review has been a lengthy process, in part due to the Committee feeling that published mater- ial was not sufficiently detailed to allow proper assessment of the various sub- missions. However, close examination of the exact pattern of white on the edges of the tertials raises a little doubt: the white seems to begin to ‘bleed’ from the edge at the base of the longest tertial, but the extent is negligible. As the photograph was taken in Kuwait, there is a strong likelihood that the bird is samamisicus but the amount of white may not be sufficient for a positive identification of such an individual in Europe away from the breeding range.

    Redstart The Redstart appears very like a Robin in many of its habits and actions. It has the same general carriage, and chat-like behaviour, and is the same length but slightly slimmer and lighter. The orange-red tail, from which it gets its name ("start" is an old word for "tail"), is frequently quivered. Male Female The Redstart is a summer visitor throughout most of Europe and western Asia (east to Lake Baikal), and also in northwest Africa in Morocco. It winters in central Africa and Arabia, south of the Sahara Desert but north of the Equator. It is widespread as a breeding bird in Great Britain, particularly in upland broadleaf woodlands and hedgerow trees, but in Ireland it is very local. The males first arrive in early to mid April, often a few days in advance of the females. Five or six light blue eggs are laid during May, with a second brood in mid summer in the south of the breeding range. It departs for Africa between mid-August and early October. It often feeds like a flycatcher, making aerial sallies after passing insects, and most of its food consists of winged insects. The call is chat-like and the alarm a plaintive single note, wheet, like that of many other chats. Habitat Redstarts prefer open mature birch and oak woodland with a high horizontal visibility and low amounts of shrub and understorey especially where the trees are old enough to have holes suitable for its nest. All of these can be seen within Madrid Province, the fo- cus of this article, all within an hour’s drive of downtown. The area holds birding interest year-round. Many of northern Europe’s birds winter in Spain, including Common Cranes (which pass through Madrid in migration), an increasing number of over-wintering European White Storks (Ciconia ciconia), and a wide variety of wa- terfowl. Spring comes early: Barn Swallows appear by February, and many Africa-wintering water birds arrive en masse in March. While data on arrival timing to breeding grounds in Europe is plentiful, information from the African departure sites are scarce. Here we analysed changes in arrival timing at a stopover site in Israel and any links to Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) on the species‑ specifc African non‑breeding range in three migratory passerines between 2000–2017. Diferences in wing length between early and late arriving individuals were also examined as a proxy for migration distance. We found that male redstart, but not females, advanced arrival to stopover site, but interestingly, not as a response to EVI phenology. Blackcap and barred warbler did not shift arrival timing signifcantly, although the arrival of blackcap was dependent on EVI. Barred warbler from the early arrival phase had longer wings, suggesting diferent populations. Our study further supports the existence species‑specifc migration decisions and inter‑sexual diferences, which may be triggered by both exogenous (local vegetation condition) and endogenous cues. Given rapid rate of changes in environmental conditions at higher latitudes, some migrants may experience difculty in the race to match global changes to ensure their survival. Current global warming is occurring at an asymmetrical pace, with greater increase in temperatures at higher northern latitudes1,2.

    Common Redstart 37.Phoenicurus phoenicurus When Gerrit Wolda, a maths teacher in The Netherlands, started his research on “physiological phenomena in some bird species” in the winter of 1909, by providing 100 nestboxes in the woodland surrounding the sanatorium “Oranje Nassau’s Oord” near Wageningen, he could not have dreamed of the far-reaching impact that his initiative would have on ornithology and ecology (Bijlsma 2006a). By “physiological phenomena” he alluded to site fi delity, mate choice and reproductive strategy (more precisely: number of broods per annum; Wolda 1918). His nestbox approach was expanded to the Hoge Veluwe in 1921 by H.N. Kluijver (Kluyver 1951); a study that is still fl ourishing (Both et al. 2006), and since copied all over Europe. An unforeseen side-effect of his study was the occupation of nestboxes by Redstarts and Wrynecks. The latter were considered such a threat to other nestbox breeders (by their habit of removing the nests and clutches of tits and redstarts) that the advice given was to remove Wrynecks from nest- boxes (as was to happen to Tree Sparrows half a century later - like Wryneck). As it happens, since he was above all a curious naturalist, Wolda did no such thing, but instead studied Wrynecks as the opportunity arose, unwittingly providing a wonderful calibration point for studies on this species during their declining phase in the late 20th cen- tury (Bijlsma et al. 2001). Returning to the Redstarts in Wolda’s days, and even much later when Ruiter (1941) did his studies on Oranje Nassau’s Oord in the mid-1930s, this species was second in abundance only to Great Tits.
