Organised by ICE Retired Members Group ‘Explore Engineering’ Walk along the Wey and Arun

Thursday 24th June 2021 at 10:00AM Meet at Tickner’s Heath Car Park, off Road, Dunsfold, GU6 8HU A walk along the canal’s summit length between Dunsfold and Loxwood, exploring the canal in its various stages of restoration and viewing examples of current and recent restoration projects. During the walk, a brief history of the origins and purpose of the canal will be given by members of the Wey and Arun Canal Trust.

Starting at the public car park at Tickner’s Heath, Dunsfold, we will first visit a recently commenced major restoration project to build a road bridge over the canal to permit vessels to navigate once again this stretch of canal. The project will require a temporary diversion of the road and will involve both contractor and volunteer input. We will then follow the Wey South Path through the woods and beyond, reaching the recently restored Gennets Bridge and Bridge, completed in 2018 by volunteers of the Wey and Arun Canal Trust. This is a fine example of an historic canal structure restoration, undertaken sensitively within an environmentally rich rural setting. Continuing south along the canal route, we will cross the Surrey/Sussex border to complete our walk at Loxwood, the site of extensive canal restoration and the centre of the current navigable stretch. All will be welcome to have a light pub lunch at the Onslow Arms pub which is situated at the side of the canal. A visit to the nearby Wey and Arun Canal Visitor Centre can also be made.

The total length of walk is about 4 miles. The walk is expected to finish about 1.30pm at Loxwood. Drivers will be ferried back to the start point to collect their cars (approx. 10-minute journey) and can then return to Loxwood to collect their passengers. A provisional group booking for lunch has been made at the Onslow Arms pub for 2pm. Those wishing to join the lunch group are asked to inform the event organiser (Gary Courtnadge). A menu will be sent in advance so that pre-ordering of meals can be made to speed-up service on arrival.

All grades of membership, guests and partners are welcome at this event. Attendance will count towards CPD. Numbers will be limited to 20 people. There is no charge for this event (lunch costs to be paid for by those partaking).
