Global crises come and go. Not so the climate emergency and loss of biodiversity. This crisis is here to stay and in our betrayal of nature, we have caused it. Irreparable damage to Planet Earth, our home, has already happened. Now is the time to act much more decisively to halt further damage. If we don’t look after our home, where will we live? The challenge presented by climate change and loss of biodiversity is being answered by everyone; local communities, governments and global agencies.

ROINN COSANTA. BUREAU OF MILITARY HISTORY, 1913-21. STATEMENT BY WITNESS. 1620 DOCUMENT NO. W.S. Witness John Timony, James Connolly St., Ballina, Co. Mayo. Identity. Capt., Crossmolina Coy., Irish Volunteers, Co. Mayo. Subject. Crossmolina Company, Irish Volunteers, Co. Mayo, 1917 21. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil. File No S.2944 Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENT BY MR. JOHN TIMONY James Connolly St., Ballina. I was born and reared in crossmolina in the Co. Mayo. My father was a farmer and my mother's maiden name was Keating. I remember my grandfather, who was a Fenian, telling us all about the French landing at Kilcummin in Killala Bay. He then lived at Lahardane where a number of the local Irish joined the French army. I don't think it is generally known that Humbert split his army shortly after landing, sending one force to Castlebar via Crossmolina arid Lahardane and the Windy Gap, and the other body went through Ballina and Foxford. to Castlebar. Two granduncles of mine joined up with Humbert at Lahardane and a large number of local people, under Father Conroy, C.C. of Lahardane, who was later captured by the English and hanged in Castlebar. The English suffered defeat all along the way of both. forces and at Castlebar were completely routed, and it is still called the Castlebar Races. Humbert then moved his complete army through Swinford to Collooney where he met and defeated a large English army outside the. town. He afterwards moved on to Dromohair by-passing Sligo, which is hard to explain, as there was an English garrison there which did not come out.

It includes Killary Harbour, Clew Bay, Black Sod Bay, Belmullet, and the islands of Inishbofin, Inishturk, Clare, Achill, and the Inishkeas. It is an area of incomparable charm and natural beauty where mountains come down to the sea unspoilt by development. It is also an area without marinas, or easy access to marine services. Self-sufficiency is absolutely necessary, along with careful navigation around a rocky lee coastline in prevailing westerlies. A vigilant watch for approach of frequent Atlantic gales must be kept. Inishbofin is reported to be the most common stopover of visiting foreign-flagged yachts in Ireland, of which there are very few on the West coast. Best time to visit is May-September. 1 24 May 2015 Port officer’s name: Services available in area covered: Daria & Alex Blackwell • There are no marinas in the west of Ireland between Galway and Killybegs in Donegal, so services remain difficult to access. Haul out facilities are now available in Kilrush on the Shannon River and elsewhere by special arrangement with crane operators. • Visitor Moorings (Yellow buoy, 15 tons): Achill / Kildavnet Pier, Achill Bridge, Blacksod, Clare Island, Inishturk, Rosmoney (Clew Bay), Leenane.

  • 7A Karst Hydrogeology Assessment
River Deel (Crossmolina) Drainage Scheme in association with 7 A KARST HYDROGEOLOGY ASSESSMENT 7A.1 INTRODUCTION A h drogeological assessment of the River Deel was commissioned b OPW in December 2015 during the options assessment stage for the River Deel Flood Relief Scheme. ,he initial purpose of the assessment was to assess the potential for a diversion channel between the River Deel and -ough Conn to impact on low flows in the River Deel. In 2015. there was a deficit of documented evidence of /arst activit in 0orth 1a o. including the catchment of the River Deel. Anecdotal evidence suggested a connection between the River Deel and the 2pond3 labelled on Ordnance Surve 1aps at 1ullenmore. A /e consideration in December 2015 was the potential for a diversion channel to affect low flow conditions in the river. which forms part of the River 1o SAC and is home to a range of protected species such as White Clawed Cra fish. Atlantic Salmon and -ampre Species. all of which are among the 4ualif ing interests of the River 1o SAC and Freshwater Pearl 1ussel. a species listed on Annex II of the E5 6abitats Directive that is not among the 4ualif ing interests of the site. 7arst flows are unpredictable and site-specific in character. 7arst activit can var in time and space so it is essential that an understanding be developed of where water goes underground. its underground routes and the possibilities of a new channel adversel affecting these /arst flows. or intersecting underground conduits. In order to understand the nature of the local /arst h drogeolog .
