The Broadacres Drive Association is a voluntary association of the residential estates and other entities (the school, shopping centre and office park) that take access off Broadacres Drive, Dainfern.

The members of the BDA pay monthly contributions calculated in accord- ance with the number of households paying levies, and those contributions are used to improve the safety, secu- rity and appearance of the road. In es- sence, the BDA members are “moving their front doors” from their own gates to the intersection of Broadacres Drive with the R511/William Nicol Highway.

The BDA contracts with Fidelity Security Services to provide a dedi- cated 24/7 armed response vehicle (“ARV”). At peak times when residents are going to work or returning to the precinct, the ARV is stationed at the intersection as a deterrent against loiterers. The ARV also acts as a back the precinct. hijacking and smash-and-grab, and up to the security operations of the at other times it patrols the road, BDA members, and responds to ac- Other functions of the BDA include monitoring suspicious vehicles and cidents and alarm activations within the maintenance of the landscaped is- lands and sidewalks, and the removal of litter and illegal signage. The BDA has also established and funded a Recycling Depot at the Valley Shop- ping Centre.

As funds accumulate, the BDA imple- ments a programme of improvements to the road reserve. The BDA provided the paved pathway on one side of the road, and fenced off the undeveloped land to control vagrants. More recently the BDA installed solar-powered cat’s eyes along part of the road, and improved the road signage to enhance safety at the traffic circle outside Dainfern College.

Lastly, the BDA monitors and if neces- sary objects to new developments in the area that might affect its mem- bers, and it attempts to put pres- sure on the local authority to comply with its obligation to repair potholes, streetlights and robots.

From time to time one will hear people complaining about one of our most familiar birds, the Hadeda Ibis. After all, they make their loud ‘haa, hadeda’ calls incessantly, disturbing the peace, and they foul driveways and gardens where they roost or where they breed. Or is that how we should be viewing this enigmatic species?

Consider for a moment the habitat requirements of the Hadeda and how they have adapted to our environment. Historically this was a species of woodland and forest areas along river courses. Now, the 14th at Pebble Beach is a bit of an exception. It’s recognised as one of the toughest par 5s in the world – it was actually the most difficult par 5 on the PGA Tour four times in the past decade – but why? Tour professionals, longer hitters and lower handicappers typically target par 5s as their chance to score, where even a regulation par would be considered “a shot dropped”.

THE SCENE Dawaat is an old favourite of Fordsburg. It only reopened again seven months ago, while trying to get established in Cape Town. But to try and make a living in the city of tourists without serving alcohol (a Muslim prerequisite), business simply wasn’t good.

Back in Joburg, however, the Muslim community abounds and non-Muslims are more than prepared to spend a night out without having drinks in order to enjoy Dawaat’s authentic tastes. And once you’ve enjoyed an ice-cold Lassi with a hearty, hot meal, you might just wave your regular bottle of wine goodbye.

Dawaat is beautifully decorated. If you’ve ever wondered, this is what most upmarket Muslim look like in Fordsburg on a beautiful Sunday Farook Wajaahat makes the best breyani the Middle East.
