In an event that could be considered just a fun distraction if it weren’t for all the hard work involved, the annual tournament drew an international field of competitors last weekend. On a green felt car- pet, five teams — three German, one Dutch and the other Iranian — con- tested RoboCup’s 9th edi- tion in Tehran, with the robots trying to prod a red ball into the back of their opponent’s net over two 10-minute halves. Standing just 60cm (24 inches) tall, the key factor in the match — unlike in everyday electronic games — the robots are pre-pro- grammed by their human masters ahead of kick-off. “The robots are com- pletely autonomous — we don’t have any control on the game and they make their own decisions,” said Novin Sharhoudi, 20, a student of software and computer engineering at Qasvin Azad University, northwest of Tehran. And unlike professional sport in which money can buy the best players, the RoboCup teams used iden- tical machines designed by Aldebaran Robotics, a French company that also provided raw technical data for the programmers. “We process the data to improve locomotion, per- ception of the infrastruc- ture and behaviour,” said Sharhoudi, referring to how and when the robots move, kick the ball and interact with team mates across a playing surface six metres (yards) long and three metres wide. Sourcing and Framing the 'War on Terror'. A Study of Attribution in Elite Newspaper Coverage. Morgan Stack (B.Sc M.Acc MBS) Supervisor: Dr. Kevin Rafter School of Communications Dublin City University A thesis submitted to Dublin City University in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. PhD June 2013 DECLARATION I hereby certify that this material, which I now submit for assessment on the programme of study leading to the award of Doctor of Philosophy , is entirely my own work, that I have exercised reasonable care to ensure that the work is original, and does not to the best of my knowledge breach any law of copyright, and has not been taken from the work of others save and to the extent that such work has been cited and acknowledged within the text of my work. Signed: ____________________ (Candidate) ID No.: 59110937 Date:_______________________ 2 ABSTRACT The 'war on terror', described as the most important framing case of our time, is analysed in this study of elite newspaper coverage primarily in terms of the 'attribution of responsibility' for specific terrorist attacks. This is justified by the role of attribution in terms of 'primary definition', the exertion of political power in the text, and the constitutive role of attribution in public opinion formation. In addition to an analysis of how the coverage 'framed' attribution, the study also attempts to speak to the validity or otherwise of the 'mythical metanarrative' interpretation of the 'war on terror'. The study proceeds to analyse the nature of news sources drawn upon in the coverage, most specifically again with respect to the construction of attribution.

http://archive.indianexpress.com/story-print/578927/ Print Close Window 26/11 accused Fahim Ansari’s lawyer killed in Mumbai office Express news service Posted online: Fri Feb 12 2010, 03:12 hrs Mumbai : Shahid Azmi, a former TADA detainee, who was the lawyer defending 26/11 co-accused Fahim Ansari, was shot dead this evening by three unidentified men who fled in an autorickshaw after committing the crime in the heart of Mumbai. Ansari is charged with conducting surveys and drawing maps to assist the Lashkar-e-Toiba attackers. According to the Kurla police, the assailants ran into Azmi’s office in Taximen’s Colony, Kurla (West), around 7.45 pm. They fired four rounds, of which three hit the 33-year-old lawyer in the head and chest. Azmi was with a clerk, who hid himself and escaped unhurt. Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Deven Bharti said, “We are probing all possible angles. It is true that he had received threats some years back from the Ravi Pujari gang.” He had approached police regarding threats to his life in 2006. He did not have any security although K P Pawar, the lawyer of Lashkar attacker Ajmal Kasab, has Z-category security. Azmi’s first big case was the 7/11 serial explosions aboard local trains in Mumbai in 2006 in which he was defending three accused, including one of the prime accused, Faisal Sheikh, the LeT’s alleged Mumbai chief. He was also the petitioner challenging application of MCOCA in the 7/11 serial blasts case in the Supreme Court.

But, the nature of truth, has baffled philosophers all over the world for ages. Like the Holy Grail, it is envisioned differently by different persons in different times and tracts. People who pursue the truth single-mindedly must of necessity tread the lonely path beset with travails and tribulations bereft of expectations of help from anyone except their own conscience to guide them. This version of the truth of the disturbing events in Gujarat during 2002 and the saga of fake encounters makes fascinating reading. According to the author, this book gives the reader an insight provided by the lens of a spy camera and spy microphone both of which were freely used in a long drawn sting operation. As to whether the material presented in this book represents facts, or mere perspective vision of the events, is for the reader to judge. The narrative interspersed with quoted conversations makes interesting reading. It is for the State apparatus enforcing the Rule of Law and the Constitutional machinery as its sentinel to objectively assess the trustworthiness of the facts narrated here and take necessary action to restore the faith of the citizens of this country in the Rule of Law.
