AACT PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Certainly it can be argued that Stephen Sondheim is the most prolific musicial show composer on the American scene since the highly prpductive Cole Porter. It is equal ly certain that he is a fascinatingly effective librettist. with Bernstein's "West Side Story;' and obvious example.

But beyond the obvious is the reflection of depth in his compositional and literary style. At once he can be lyrical, while stretching the musical mind in interesting and challeng· ing construction-demanding strict attention to unusual word usage and imagery.

From the whimsey of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" to the stark, chilling drama of 'Sweeney Todd," Sondheim never lets the listener take anything for granted.

But in "Side by Side" his offerings are sheer pleasure. We hope you simply sit back and enjoy them!
