Prelude

Welcome

Processional Hymn “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” 443 Hosanna, loud hosanna, The Lord of men and angels The little children sang; Rode on in lowly state Through pillared court and Temple Nor scorned that little children The lovely anthem rang. Should on His bidding wait. To Jesus, who had blessed them, Close folded to His breast, "Hosanna in the highest!" The children sang their praises, That ancient song we sing, The simplest and the best. For Christ is our Redeemer, The Lord of heaven our King. From Olivet they followed Oh, may we ever praise Him Mid an exultant crowd, With heart and life and voice The victor palm-branch waving And in His blissful presence And chanting clear and loud. Eternally rejoice.

Prayer of the Day Pastor: With great joy we welcome You, Lord Jesus! The journey has been long and we have longed to enter the Holy City. You come into our hearts and our lives, humbly, patiently, encouraging us to learn and grow, to go in Your Name on journeys of hope and healing. Open our hearts today to hear Your Words, as we sing praise to You. Hosanna! Blessed is the One who comes in the Lord’s Name. People: Amen! Pastor: God of all hopefulness, God of my life, on this holy day of Palms and Passions and through this the holiest of weeks, when our Lenten journey finds its completion at the foot of a cross; People: We seek Your forgiveness, we yearn for Your guidance, we desire Your compassion. Pastor: Fill us we pray, with the ability to turn to You, kneeling before You may Your grace open our hearts and minds and souls, that we might be transformed in You, through You, by You, for You. People: Transformed once more, this day, this week, into a new self, may we become a new people, a people of grace, compassion, and good news, born anew from our own deepest sorrows through the breadth of Your forgiveness and love. Epistle Reading Philippians 2:5-11 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; 7 rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a human being, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Please Stand. Lector: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 12th chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord.

The Triumphal Entry Reading John 12:12-19 12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Festival heard that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!"

14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: 15 "Do not be afraid, Daughter of Zion; see, your King is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."

16 At first His disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about Him and that these things had been done to Him.

17 Now the crowd that was with Him when He called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that He had performed this sign, went out to meet Him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!"

Lector: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ.

Children’s Message

Hymn of the Day “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” 575 My hope is built on nothing less His oath, His covenant and blood Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; Support me in the raging flood; No merit of my own I claim When ev’ry earthly prop gives way, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name. He then is all my hope and stay.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face, When He shall come with trumpet sound, I rest on His unchanging grace; Oh, may I then in Him be found, In ev’ry high and stormy gale Clothed in His righteousness alone, My anchor holds within the veil. Redeemed to stand before His throne!

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand.

Sermon Palm Sunday Pastor Jon Zehnder 1. The point of Jesus’ Cross is not about the suffering that He went through. 2. Our Lord’s real suffering was a kind of agony that none of us could ever imagine. 3. We’ve all got this problem. 4. All of the guilt, regret, cruelty, evil, and inhumanity…….all of that darkness, all laid on the shoulders of the One person who could carry that burden because He is the only One who ever lived without . 5. Jesus, who, through all of eternity, had never known anything but intimacy, love, and unity with His Father, is now utterly . 6. God says, “I love you so much that I will give you the life of My Son, and I will suffer from the One that I have loved through all of eternity.” 7. We have a God who chooses to embrace our , even when He doesn’t have to. 8. We will have the opportunity again, as we do each day, to own our own stain and to seek and to receive again. 9. That’s what the Cross is about. It is about dying, but it’s also about again.

“Lamb of God” 550 Your only Son, no sin to hide, O Lamb of God, Sweet Lamb of God, But you have sent Him from Your side I love the holy Lamb of God! To walk upon this guilty sod, O wash me in His precious blood, And to become the Lamb of God. My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God

O Lamb of God, Sweet Lamb of God, I was so lost, I should have died, I love the holy Lamb of God! But you have brought me to Your side O wash me in His precious blood, To be led by Your staff and rod, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God And to be called a lamb of God.

Your Gift of love They crucified, O Lamb of God, Sweet Lamb of God, They laughed and scorned I love the holy Lamb of God! Him as He died: O wash me in His precious blood, The humble King They named a fraud, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God And sacrificed the Lamb of God.
