Craig Gauging how electronic publishing technologies may affect literature in the future, this project examines how publishers in the underground literary world of zines are utilizing electronic publishing. I argue that the relationship between print and electronic publishing is complex, and that despite claims of “the death of the book” and that hypertext transforms writing, literature will continue to flourish in the future in both traditional and new forms, in print and on screen. Research is based on a body of 512 ezines and zine related websites and interviews with 54 people involved with zines and ezines. The first chapter introduces the study and explains the background, organization, and methodology of it, laying out the argument that by studying how zine publishers are experimenting with electronic publishing in the present, a better understanding of how electronic publishing may affect literature and literary culture in the future can be achieved. The second chapter details the origins of print zines, arguing that their historical development has resulted in characteristics of personal communication, opposition to the mainstream, noncommercial ethos, and the use of affordable and available technology. The third chapter traces the development of hypertext, the Internet, Wright Chapter One 7 and the World Wide Web, the technologies that have made electronic publishing a viable alternative to print publishing for zine publishers, presenting claims and questions that have revolved around these technologies and their use. The fourth chapter explores the history and characteristics of online media such as textfiles, ASCII text-only ezines, home pages, online journals, online magazines, and weblogs, arguing that their legacy influenced the work of zine publishers online. The fifth chapter explains what zine publishers are doing online by analyzing 512 electronic publications, placing them in the major categories of promotional websites, archive websites, online co-publishes, and ezines, arguing that print publishing exerts a considerable influence on their activities but that electronic publishing has opened new possibilities and challenges. The sixth and final chapter explores how readers and society have responded to the online work of zine and ezine publishers, and offers conclusions and conjectures on the future of zines, literature, mass media, and publishing. Wright Chapter One 8 Chapter One From Zines To Ezines: Electronic Publishing And The Literary Underground Introduction To The Study The January 1, 2000 issue of Newsweek included a special section entitled “The 21st Century: A User’s Guide,” which predicted what life in the new century would be like. Among other prognostications, the magazine declared that printed books would be relegated to the dustbin of history, replaced by electronic books (Levy, “It’s Time To Turn The Last Page” 96). In the heat of millennium fever, the magazine presented the shift from books on paper to books on screen as inevitable, but in 2001 with Harry Potter novels setting sales records for printed books and surveys suggesting that only 1 in 5 consumers will purchase an electronic book in the near future, it’s not at all certain that Newsweek’s forecast will indeed come to pass (“Potter Sales Hit Magic Number”; Italie). However, the very raising of the possibility that printed matter may cease to be a significant cultural presence in the future suggests the question of what consequences may arise from this change, if any. To date, because most major publishers were reluctant to embrace electronic publishing, the cultural critics who had weighed in on the subject could offer little more than speculation that ranged from the utopian to the apocalyptic. This dissertation seeks to change that state of affairs by presenting an analysis of the experiences of a literary subculture heretofore based on print--zines, publications issued by an individual or small group for personal reasons--and the experimentation with electronic publishing occurring within it. Because the motivation for publishing a zine is driven more by passion than profit and zine publishers typically Wright Chapter One 9 use the most affordable and accessible publishing technology available to them, the zine community has been less reluctant than major publishers, who often have large amounts of capital invested in the established ways of print publishing, to embrace electronic publishing and is consequently facing at the present time many issues raised by a move from print to electronic publishing. To that end, I studied a body of 512 electronic publications by zine and ezine publishers and interviewed 54 people associated with either ezines or zines in order to assess how zine publishers were experimenting with online publishing. Their experiences serve as a guide for what the larger literary culture may expect should such a shift in publishing media occur. Furthermore, coming at a time when decisions concerning the use of new electronic publishing technologies and the future of print are being weighed by those in the academy, the mass media, and the publishing industry, this study may illuminate discussions which would otherwise remain in the realm of the hypothetical, and in turn lead to decisions based on the best evidence available instead of on untested

What propels this mythology is the concept of the Internet as a neutral site, where identity is irrelevant other than the persona one chooses to create and share. Social life on the Internet is presented as an idealized, random collection of atomized individuals who happen to come together to interact over shared interests, with collectivity stopping there. Of course, this mythology has always been attractive to a certain segment of the population, who has always been able to utilize the Internet and shape society as they wished: Straight white men, often considered the default Internet user, see the Internet as a neutral tool because it conforms so exactly to their expectations, everyone else had to make adjustments and look for loopholes in order to use the Internet in the way they wanted. (Poland, 2016, p. 213) Indeed, for the women and minorities who are constantly harassed on the Internet, they are met with the dismissive (if not hostile) attitude that this is the price to pay for having the nerve to disrupt the “wide, open cyberspaces” that they are violating because of their unwillingness to no longer let racism, sexism, and homophobia go unnoticed. This can take the form of name calling, threats, and a blurring of online and offline stalking and violence. Far from being a neutral, idealized space, what the Internet reveals is “a story of how the deepest prejudices in a society can take purchase in new settings due to technology” which has been in the process of “transforming not only online spaces but real lives and potentially even the trajectory of our politics” for some time now (Beauchamp, 2019, para.

Chris Boarts-Larson, ABC No Rio Kurt Cobain once told an interviewer, “punk rock should mean freedom.”1 The Nirvana singer was arguing that punk, as an idea, had the potential to tran- scend the boundaries of any particular sound or style, allowing musicians an enormous degree of artistic autonomy. But while punk music has often served as a platform for creative expression and symbolic protest, its libratory potential stems from a more fundamental source. Punk, at its core, is a form of direct action. Instead of petitioning the powerful for inclusion, the punk movement has built its own elaborate network of counter-institutions, including music venues, media, record labels, and distributors. Date of Submission: September 2005 Abstract This thesis describes and analyses the politics of the Australian DIY anarcha-punk scene and the ethos of the culture’s participants. Eschewing the orthodox sub-cultural approach which situates “punk” within a structuralist hegemony / resistance paradigm, the thesis uses participant observation and textual analysis techniques to understand the role played by zines (hand made publications) in fostering the intellectual and ethical capacities needed to participate in the Australian DIY anarcha-punk scene. The zines, in their deviation from classical anarchism, often invoke concepts of power and “the political” analogous with those of poststructuralist theory, yet DIY anarchist politics also diverge from poststructuralism. I therefore address DIY anarchist politics by questioning the significance of these inconsistencies with Theory. In doing so I am led to suggest that the zines may be more usefully approached as elements in the ethico- political practice of DIY anarchism, which nonetheless draws on the “conceptual vocabulary” of much poststructuralism, as well as other theoretical approaches.

White, The Making of the President, 19681 Richard Nixon, like millions of other Americans, enjoyed Florida and the nearby islands of Cuba and the Bahamas as refuges where he could leave behind his many cares and inhibitions. But he also returned again and again to the region as an important ongoing source of political and financial support. In the process, the lax ethics of its shadier operators left its mark on his career. This Sunbelt frontier had long attracted more than its share of sleazy businessmen, promoters, and politicians who shared a get-rich-quick spirit. In Florida, hustlers made quick fortunes selling worthless land to gullible northerners and fleecing vacationers at illegal but wide-open gambling joints. Sheriffs and governors protected bookmakers and casino operators in return for campaign contributions and bribes. In nearby island nations, as described in chapter 4, dictators forged alliances with US mobsters to create havens for offshore gambling and to wield political influence in Washington. Nixon’s Caribbean milieu had roots in the mobster-infested Florida of the 1940s. He was introduced to that circle through banker and real estate investor Bebe Rebozo, lawyer Richard Danner, and Rep. George Smathers. Later this chapter will explore some of the diverse connections of this group by following the activities of Danner during the 1968 presidential campaign, as they touched on Nixon’s financial and political ties to Howard Hughes, the South Florida crime organization of Santo Trafficante, and mobbed-up hotels and casinos in Las Vegas and Miami.

Wilson, for example, had a devastating stroke in October 1919, after which his wife and physician hid him in the White House, with the former functioning as an unofficial acting or co-president for many months.

    Popular Music and Society, Vol. 26, No. 1, 2003 “A Little Too Ironic”: The Appropriation and Packaging of Riot Grrrl Politics by Mainstream Female Musicians Kristen Schilt “RIOT GIRL IS: BECAUSE I believe with my wholeheartmindbody that girls constitute a revolutionary soul force that can, and will, change the world for real” (“Riot Grrrl Is” 44) “Girl power!” (Spice Girls) Introduction Female rock musicians have had difficulty making it in the predominantly white male rock world. Joanne Gottlieb and Gayle Wald note that women’s participation in rock music usually consists of bolstering male performance, in the roles of groupie, girlfriend, or back-up singer (257). Even in punk rock, women are often treated as a novelty by the music press and cultural critics. Male bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Damned achieve rock notoriety while their female counterparts, like the Slits and the Raincoats, sink into obscurity. However, 1995 saw an explosion in the music press about a new group of female musicians: the angry women. Hailed in popular magazines for blending feminism and rock music, Alanis Morissette topped the charts in 1995. Affectionately named the “screech queen” by Newsweek, Morissette combined angry, sexually graphic lyrics with catchy pop music (Chang 79). She was quickly followed by Tracy Bonham, Meredith Brooks, and Fiona Apple. Though they differed in musical style, this group of musicians embodied what it meant to be a woman expressing anger through rock music, according to the music press. Popular music magazines argued that musicians like Morissette were creating a whole new genre for female performers, one that allowed them to assert their ideas about feminism and sexual- ity.
