I'm looking forward to seeing all of you there!! ******************** As many of you may know, an article was recently written expressing the view that the buzzword of the day seems to be preservation, and that the term preservation implies breeding every available female to one certain dog. This is indeed not the case. There should be no confusion as to what the term preservation means.

According to Merriam-Webster, preservation, or the transitive verb preserve, means to keep safe from injury, harm, or destruction; in other words to protect. This is what ALAC and its Breed Sustaining Committee is attempting to do for the Lhasa Apso breed. The Breed Sustaining Committee and ALAC Board are attempting to devise plans to help sustain the future of the breed. ALL OF US SHOULD EMBRACE THIS GOAL!! The following was prepared by the Breed Sustaining Committee.

Preservation Breeding 2021

In 2018 it was brought to our Club's attention that our breed had entered the low entry status with the American Kennel Club due to lower entries at the dog shows. With our aging membership litter registration dropped drastically among our according to the American Kennel Club records.

The meaning of Preservation breeding is to save the past for the future before it is too late. As you know, ALAC established a Sustaining The Future group. The group enlisted experienced breeders from all backgrounds of expertise to formulate plans within the club to help sustain the future of the breed. They worked to come up with several plans to promote all the advantages of owning a Lhasa Apso today. Because they are a healthy and long lived breed they offer so much to families today.

Breeders with the official as their blueprint are using Social Media to highlight all the best aspects of our breed back to the public's attention. This is done through pictures, stories, videos and mentorship to new breeders. We wanted to encourage our breeders to again and asked them to join us on Breeder Web sites and several Facebook Lhasa Groups to help educate new Lhasa owners. The new ALAC Expert Breeders Group on Facebook answers questions from Lhasa pet owners on health, training and grooming. The group now has over 1500 new Lhasa followers. It features videos on picking a puppy, giving a bath to puppies to grooming and trimming show coats. All this was produced by breeders for free on YouTube. Some have been viewed and shared 1.4 million times to date. All great ways to draw more attention to owning a Lhasa Apso.

We are also steering puppy buyers to the ALAC website every day to our new updated Find a Breeder page to help them easily locate quality Lhasa puppies or adults from our member breeders by state. We are promoting the use of great customer service by our breeders. ALAC members are joining us every day determined to promote all the great aspects our Lhasas can offer as a great predictable family companion, service, emotional support dog as well as a performance and show dog.

Our knowledgeable Breeders are very dedicated to making health and temperaments a high priority today.

ALAC Online - April 2021 - Page 5 Using the AKC Breed Standard as their guide in breeding consistent predictable type with structure to the highest standards. Our Breeders are passionate lifetime students dedicated to preserving Lhasa Apsos for generations to come.

This breed was gifted to us to protect by our mentors before us. The future is up to us now. WHEN GOOD BREEDERS WORK TOGETHER, GREAT THINGS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED.

Please join us!

Pat Keen Fernandes for the Breed Sustaining Committee

If you are interested in this subject of breed preservation, as we all should be, you should also check out another worthwhile source related to preservation breeding. It is one to which several ALAC members currently belong; a Facebook group entitled Preservationists of and Purposefully Bred Dogs. This particular Facebook page seeks to “facilitate good discussion on preserving purebred and/or purposefully bred dogs, with posts to educate, inform and help others, but moreover generate positive discussion (rather than negative and divisive topics).”

The goal of the group is:

1) To promote the breeding of purebred and/or purposefully bred dogs; 2) To bring together breeders and advocates to breeding purebred and/or purposefully bred dogs; 3) To communicate & educate, in and outside our fancy on purebred and/or purposefully bred dogs; 4) To build a community of respectful contributors and students on the subject of purebred and/or purposefully bred dogs; 5) To collaborate, not argue, bicker or point blame; and certainly not be rude and/or disrespectful to other group members; and 6) To assist with assembly and mobilization of members on action alerts and other important legislation matters.

From the March Issue Feature

APOLOGIES to Mr. Joe Walton!! His responses somehow ended up in cyberspace, so did not get included in last month's issue, and is now included here. JUDGES

JOE WALTON What do you consider the most and least important aspect of the Lhasa Apso standard? Most important aspects, head, coat and tail. Least important - All parts are important, but perhaps common faults with all breeds. Since there is no DQ in the mouth, dentition is not very important, as long as teeth are not showing, which isn't even listed as a fault.

What is the hardest part of the standard to judge? The Lhasa Apso standard is not hard to judge by, but maybe the tail carriage is a bit vague.

What do you see as trending in the breed today - good and bad? Good trends - Size is more uniform, Bad trends - Not many being shown, too much stop in many LA's, and often I find soft coats.

Have you judged Lhasas in other countries and how did you find that experience? . Yes, I have judge LA's in other countries, and they are perhaps a little more “old fashioned” with perhaps sharper temperaments.

ALAC Online - April 2021 - Page 9 Summarized by Through Advance Preparation Naomi Hanson

In September 2020 a Best Practice's document was provided to the AKC Delegates All Breeds/Parent Clubs Joint At-Risk Subcommittee. The document was prepared by Maggi Strouse. This article provides steps to be taken to make sure our dogs are cared for if we become unable to do so.

It is our responsibility as dog owners to make provision for our animals if something should happen to us. Asking for help from others is sometimes difficult. There are some steps that can be taken “in case” something happens.

The first is to put emergency contact information on the cell phone. For further information, check out the following website: hp://ktla.com/2017/03/10/how-to-put-emergency-contact-info-on-your-phones-lock-screen/

Carry a wallet card with the contact information for the dog(s) emergency custodian(s). Put a copy with the vehicle registration information. Family members and friends should also have copies. The card should say the following:

Pets At Home Need Attention

If I am ill or injured, please contact at least one of the following who are authorized to take custody and care for my Pet(s) as soon as possible. Provide the contacts with information about my whereabouts and condition.

Name______Phone______Name______Phone______Name______Phone______

So how do you choose who to select to be listed on the card? At least one should be in your local area who has agreed to serve as a temporary emergency custodian. It is also suggested that another be a member of a specialty or all-breed club who could coordinate care of the animals. The responsible individuals should have keys to the house and kennel and veterinarian information. Be sure you have posted information at home regarding the care and feeding of the dogs.

The Best Practices document suggests that a Durable Power of Attorney be created. This will give more specific directives regarding care for your dogs while you are unable to care for them. A sample packet of a Durable Power of Attorney and/or Pet Trust document can be found at: hp://www.2ndchance4pets.org/2nd%20Chance%204%20Pets%20Nov%202008%20Newsleer.pdf These documents do not authorize the custodian to sign AKC documents. See AKC Incapacitation Authorization Notice: hp://images.akc.org/pdf/ASCU02.pdf

The more formal way to be sure your dogs are cared for is by preparing a Pet Trust and a Will. These will necessitate an appointment with an attorney or professional. Information regarding dealing with AKC in the event of death can be found at the following sites: AKC Procedures for Registration Matters: hp://images.akc.org/pdf/rulebooks/RREGS2.pdf and AKC Statement of Legal Rights: hp://images.akc.org.pdf/ASCU03.pdf.

Lhasa Apso column AKC Gazette - March 2021

Travelling in tandem with the Covid-19 pandemic is another disease that is a proved contributing or aggravating factor in gastrointestinal, skin, respiratory and cardiac conditions, behavioral disorders, a weakened immune system and a shortened lifespan. We're talking about chronic stress.

Stress affects both humans and dogs. It's the body's reaction to a threat. It triggers hormones that contribute to survival, such as the fight or flight response. The main hormone released is cortisol, which increases heartrate, triggers blood flow to the muscles, reduces it to the stomach and intestines and puts the brain and body in survival mode. But high levels of these hormones are destructive when chronically present in the system.

While the reaction to stress differs among individuals, the triggers are usually the same. Change in schedule, environment, travel, confinement, emotional loss, lack of exercise, situations that cause anxiety, boredom, grooming, a trip to the vet or stress signals given off by those to whom we are emotionally attached. And isolation. Lack of interaction with others – think the pandemic. Cut off from social interaction, community, friends and family.

The old saying that nervousness travels down the lead is scientifically proven to be true. Stress in their human is replicated in the dog. Dogs have 10,000 years' experience observing and analyzing human behavior and their anxiety level is usually similar to that of their owner. Coritsol leaves a history of its presence in the body found in hair or fur. Analyses of dog and human hair for evidence of cortisol revealed similar levels in humans and their pets.

Signs of stress in your dog include, but are not limited to, nausea, diarrhea, panting, licking, lethargy, excessive barking, pacing, chewing, frequent yawning (a stress reliever), separation anxiety and more.

Stress can be managed. In the case of show dogs, efforts to relieve boredom might trump ideal coat conditioning on a drop-coated breed, but yield physical and mental health benefits for both owners and dogs that surpass some loss of conditioning. Coats can be protected using creative solutions, whereas mind and body cannot.

Some ways to reduce stress and improve mental health are:

· More house time for show dogs – Being kenneled 24/7 is stressful. Show dogs are accustomed to travelling, seeing new places, people and other dogs, plus the excitement of competing. Put a belly band or panties on naughty boys or girls and bring them into the house regularly to play, run around freely and do all the things companion animals do.

· Training sessions – Try Rally online or teach tricks. Learning is good mental exercise for the dog and the owner will benefit from knowing how best the dog learns.

· Structured walks – Band up side coat, put on your mask, and, weather permitting, go for regular brisk walks. It's great muscle and aerobic conditioning, kills boredom, and releases hormones that

ALAC Online - April 2021 - Page 12 combat depression. Some extra bathing might be needed, but the benefits outweigh the work.

· Change toys – A simple stimulation is to change toys frequently. New toys are always a diversion and puzzle toys are a bonus.

· Games – play fetch, hide the treat, or some other favorite game to exercise the mind. Practice free- stacking off lead in the kitchen or elsewhere.

· Beware of separation anxiety – There are reports of separation anxiety in dogs that never have exhibited it or in “Covid puppies”, both now used to seeing owners non-stop. Structured alone time for dogs may help avoid this issue.

These trying times demand flexibility, creativity and dedication to sustaining mental as well as physical health for us and our loved ones. The best stress relief of all? Play with puppies.

What’s in a Name?

This month we have two well-seasoned show folk - Arlene Miller and Eric King (who is fairly new to Lhasas but also shows Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Collies). Enjoy!

Desiderata, Arlene Miller, British Columbia Way back in 1971, I arranged to breed my new Champion Lhasa Apso to BIS Ch Sumchen of Abbotsford, and felt that I should have a CKC registered kennel name to mark the venture. Canada's then Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, quoted that "no doubt the Universe is unfolding as it should" from the lovely poem "Desiderata," whose opening line began "Go placidly amid the noise and haste," which seemed to exemplify my Lhasa's approach to life with my four young children. While earlier name choices had been rejected as already registered to other breeders, the name was approved and has served me well over the years.

What is a Name – Koenigplatz Kennel, Eric and Ava King, North Carolina

The name of our kennel is Koenigplatz Kennel. So how did we come to this unusual name for our kennel? Once you hear the story, you will understand how Ava and I came to this name for the kennel. I lived in Munich Germany for five years in the early 1990s. Yes, I do speak German. I was working for an American high-tech company. Its European headquarters were located just outside Munich, Germany. I had an apartment in Munich. I loved Munich, and my time in Germany. Munich holds a special place in my heart. You walk around and see beautiful architecture all around you. One of the places close to my apartment was Königsplatz. . The word Koenigplatz is German in origin. Translated into English, Koenigplatz means “King’s Square” or “King’s Place”. So, it was only logical with my love for Munich and my last name King, that ‘Koenigplatz Kennel’ was the name selected for our kennel.

ALAC Online - April 2021 - Page 21 ALAC Member of the Year Award ALAC Member of the Year

This award can be presented annually to a member who has excelled on behalf of ALAC during the previous calendar year. A member can nominate another member on the appropriate ALAC club form and the form can also be in the bulletin, website or in ALAC online emails. The board can also nominate a member. The selection of the recipient will be done by the board no later than the August board meeting and will be awarded at the annual meeting or the annual banquet.

The recipient WILL NOT be an officer or board member, but rather someone running a committee or doing any type work on behalf of ALAC that deserves recognition. It is not necessary to have this award each year, but only when it is warranted.

Note: The history of this award comes from the AKC’s offering of the Sportsman of the Year Award for parent clubs to offer to deserving members. Provided we have a deserving member, it can be presented each year.
