EMC Events for Councillors

Mentoring for Mentors and Mentees, 19 June 2015. EMC is holding a half day workshops for Councillors on mentoring, designed specifically to support those interested in being a mentor. The session will cover; is mentoring for you?; how much time can you invest in mentoring?; what mentors do; the benefits of mentoring for you, the mentee and the council; and what makes an effective mentor. A second session will take place for those interested in being a mentee. Details are available here.

Chairing and Facilitation Skills for Councillors, 16 September 2015. EMC is running a half day Chairing and Facilitation Skills event for Councillors. Details are available here.

The document sets out plans to guide the development and direction of the Institute over the next five years with a strong emphasis on growth - in influence, membership, profile, partnerships and international outreach. Underpinning the strategy is a commitment to provide leadership on planning education and professional standards, research and knowledge, and constructive debate about the importance of spatial planning. DCLG has published details of how much New Homes Bonus grant will be paid to each local authority in England in 2015 to 2016.

Encraft’s Building Physics team, in association with Sustainability West Midlands, are organising their annual conference themed on Passivhaus and Low Carbon Building: Delivering 2016 Standards on 23rd April (0930-1400) in Birmingham. The agenda for the day is here and will feature their Passivhaus work in the East Midlands. The event will be of particular interest to local authority housing and planning officers. Meanwhile, Encraft’s Building Physics team have also launched a range of free CPD events for local authorities, housing associations and architects – to be delivered at local council offices normally during lunchtime. Local Government Policy (Officer Contact: [email protected]) Daventry District Council could become the first local authority in the country to fine dog walkers who can’t prove they have the means to clean up after their pet. The Council is considering introducing a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to make it an offence for dog walkers not to carry a poop bag or other means of clearing up after their animal.

Two hundred and seventeen local authorities and other organisations, including East Midlands Councils, completed ghp’s survey into ‘The Digitisation & Channel Shift In Local Authorities’ which aims to present a comprehensive picture of the common trends, pitfalls and success stories across local government in terms of deploying and utilising digitisation and channel shift. The findings are available here.
