Malta (Part 1) In this episode of The Travel Bug we’re starting a two-week exploration of Malta. It’s home to some of the oldest and most significant ruins on the planet and loads of fascinating sites from the many powers that have ruled here throughout the centuries. But it’s not all about the ancient history, there’s also stunning coastal scenery, incredible food and plenty of fun to be had. 8. Malta (Part 2) It doesn’t take long to discover that Malta might be a small country, but boy does it have loads to offer travellers. It’s a place where ancient history and stunning architecture lay the foundations for an experience that fuses the old and new, where rugged yet spectacular scenery is matched by a rich and beautiful culture. Greece (Part 1) Grab a coffee and get comfy because in this episode of The Travel Bug Morgan is heading to Greece and you won’t want to miss a second of it! It’s a place he’s wanted to visited since he first got the hunger to travel, but for some reason it’s taken decades to finally find his way here. Over the next two episodes he’ll be heading from Athens, across to Corinth, through Tripoli and Kalamata, eventually finding his way to the coast of Stoupa. Morgan is going to show you the old world and the new. From the temple of Olympian Zeus and other ancient ruins to local delicacies, coastal hideaways and remote mountain tops. 10. Greece & Crete In this episode the Greece adventure continues as we spend a little more time checking out the mainland, eventually finding our way to the southern most point. From there it’s back to Athens to board a ferry across to Crete. Here Morgan learns about the island’s fascinating history, from ancient times, right through to World War two. And of course explores the local food and delves into the culture that makes it so unique. 11. Crete © Off The Fence 2014 2 Morgan has found his way to the island of Crete, a place that’s the last stop before hitting North Africa and combines influences from there, Europe and the Middle East to create a unique mix of tastes, sites and sounds. The Travel Bug will show you an authentic slice of life here and introduce you to some of the characters that make this such a wonderful place to visit. 12. Special After a busy year travelling the world there were countless highlights across the series that we had to leave out. But to make sure you didn’t miss out on anything The Travel Bug team made a special episode that includes some of the great moments that were experienced during the journey. © Off The Fence 2014 3 .

  • Modern Marvels Jewish Adventures in the Graphic Novel
jewish literature Identity and Imagination modern marvels Jewish Adventures in the Graphic Novel Essay by Jeremy Dauber atran assistant professor of yiddish language, literature, and culture at columbia university Presented by Nextbook and the American Library Association modern marvels Jewish Adventures in the Graphic Novel Jeremy Dauber Back when he was on Saturday Night Live, Adam Sandler used to do a skit called “The Hanukkah Song,” where he would sing about all the celebrities no one knew were Jewish (“David Lee Roth lights the menorah, / So do James Caan, Kirk Douglas, and the late Dinah Shore-ah.”). If Sandler were to write a similar tune about comic books, he’d have his work cut out for him. Superman? The Last Son of Krypton was the brainchild of two Jewish men from Cleveland, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Batman? The handiwork of Bob Kane and Bill Finger. The Marvel comic book characters who have made their way to a multiplex near you—the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Hulk? The products of Stanley Lieber and Jacob Kurtzberg’s imaginations (better known as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby). More than two million Eastern European Jewish immigrants arrived in the United States between 1880 and 1920, just in time to participate in the great explosion of American popular arts: fi lm, radio, vaudeville, sports, and eventually television. One of the most page 1 powerful of these new cultural institutions was the periodical press, both in Yiddish and in English. Publishers like William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, determined to reach as many readers as possible, transformed the newspaper, introducing new features like advice columns, full-color photo sections, and, of course, the comic strip.
