Municipal Commissioner From the Dean’s desk..... The twin institutes of the Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital were established in 1926 with a nationalistic spirit to cater to the “health care needs of the northern parts of the island” to be manned entirely by Indians. With a glorious legacy of over 80 years, 10 lakh patients and 50,000 plus surgeries annually, these institutes are among the top ranked in the city and country with the Latin maxim “Non Sibi Sed Omnibus- not for self but for all”, embedded in every heart. The year 2019 was marked by several achievements. New equipment and services were made possible through funds from the municipal corporation, government agencies and munificent donations of individuals and trustees. To name a few, Theater 3 of the Anatomy department was converted into a Digital Medical Lecture Theater, new ECHO machines were procured was Cardiology, medical thoracoscopy services were started at the Chest Medicine department as also a center of excellence for management of aortic aneurysms in the CVTS department. A product development center was instituted by the Indian Council of Medical Research at the Clinical Pharmacology department and community medicine established a Palliative Care outpatient clinic. A new excimer laser was procured by Dermatology while ENT, Neurosurgery Radiology and Medicine departments procured several new equipment. A one stop center for women was initiated by the Forensic Medicine department and the work on the liver ICU was completed. Microbiology launched a mobile app for auditing biomedical waste and received recognition from the Government of India as a virus reference laboratory. Neonatology launched a metabolic screening program for neonates while ICU dialysis facility was started for critically ill patients in MICU by the Nephrology department. A state-of-the-art PET /CT machine was installed by the nuclear medicine department – 1st state of art PET/CT machine in the MCGM and state Govt Hospitals while a modular OT was inaugurated by Paediatric Surgery. Paediatric Anaesthesia introduced services for MRI while several training workshops were conducted by Pharmacology, Orthopaedics and Pathology. Plastic Surgery organized their annual burn survivor camp and Urology department started an incontinence outpatient clinic. A glorious paradox of an educational institute is that while the alumni grow old, the Alma Mater grows, forever young. As the institute celebrates its 90th year, it is hoped that these developments will constructively change the institutes for betterment of patients, greater efficiency of its enormous staff and help sounder training of its students and resident medical doctors, not to forget the support staff, nursing school and her alumni. At the end of the day, however, as several thousand patients walk through these hallowed portals each year with hope in their hearts, it will remain our primary responsibility to ensure that they get the best medical care from kind, caring and compassionate physicians, hands that comfort, soothe and heal. In the words of Bob Dole, “When it’s all over, it’s not who you were. It’s whether you made a difference”. Hemant Deshmukh Dean - Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital January 2020 Editor’s Note... In the first month of 2020, we are ready to embark upon yet another 12-month journey and look forward to foundation day of the institute. It is now time to take stock and look at the year that was- what was achieved, what went wrong, where could we improve and how we can move forward. This annual report in its individual chapters looks at the work, the teaching, the research, publications, awards, achievements and much more. While the general format of the report has remained the same, it has nonetheless chronicled the numerous achievement and changes, both minor and major that have taken place in the last year-2019. The experience of putting this document together has been both humbling and enlightening. A huge thank you is due to Dr Hemant Deshmukh, Dean for his faith in me, his patience, vision and tenacity of purpose. This has helped shape the document. Gratitude is also due to heads of department and staff members for sending information. The editorial team [Gita Nataraj, Shruti Bhide, Raakhi Tripathi and Lopa madam] that helped me put the report together deserves sincere thanks. I owe a debt of gratitude to the faculty and students of my department- Renju, Debdipta, Mitesh, Vijaya, Palvi, Prajakta and Rebecca for their untiring efforts at follow up and help with editing and formatting. Lastly, thanks are also due to Kalpesh and Laxmish at Urvi Compugraphics for layout, formatting, and inputs in the cover design and working long hours to ensure that the report is ready on time. While the compilation has been done over two weeks with utmost care; the sheer magnitude and diversity of the report may have led to omissions and inadvertent errors. I request the staff members to bear with me. Efforts have gone into making the document comprehensive, yet discerning. It is hoped that as one sifts through the pages, the quality and quantum of patient care, education and research come through and we look ahead to 2020 with new hope and zest.
