Mankind was created to commune with God. Our first parents walked and talked with God in the Garden, but we lost that privilege as we turned from God, and followed our own paths, turning away from life and health. Prayer restores us and makes us fully human. Prayer is an act of communion and conversation between God and His children. In our prayers we acknowledge our total dependance upon God, even as we praise Him for His love and mercy as revealed through Jesus Christ.

Prayer should be a frequent part of our lives; indeed St. Paul urges us to “pray without ceasing” (I Thess. 5:17). We pray in thanksgiving, and for forgiveness, guidance, healing, strength, wisdom, and all good things needed to live as God calls us to live. At times we will pray “from the heart,” using our own words. At other times we may pray using the prayers of the Church, prayers hallowed by centuries of use, prayers which furnish a structure and framework for our spiritual lives.

-2- It is always helpful to have a Rule of Prayer to guide us as we pray. Such a Rule should be consistent and manageable, and developed in consultation with one’s Parish and Confessor.

This collection provides prayers from the Western Rite Orthodox tradition. Most of these prayers are drawn from The English Office, The Orthodox Missal, and The Orthodox Ritual; some are taken from The (1928), A Little Book of Prayers from Old English Sources (1900), and The Anglican Service Book (1991). Morning and Evening Prayers, along with the Self-examination before Confession, from A Pocket Prayer Book for Orthodox Christians (1956), have also been included, as they are commonly used throughout our Archdiocese.

It is hoped that this little collection will aid God’s people as they offer prayers and praises to the honor and glory of His Name.

O ye sons of men, how long will ye blaspheme mine honor, * and have such pleasure in vanity, and seek after falsehood? 3. Know this also, that the Lord hath chosen to himself the man that is godly; * when I call upon the Lord he will hear me. 4. Stand in awe, and sin not; * commune with your own heart, and in your chamber, and be still. 5. Offer the sacrifice of righteousness, * and put your trust in the Lord. 6. There be many that say, * Who will show us any good?

-21- 7. Lord, lift thou up * the light of thy countenance upon us. 8. Thou hast put gladness in my heart; * yea, more than when their corn and wine and oil increase. 9. I will lay me down in peace, and take my rest; * for it is thou, Lord, only, that makest me dwell in safety. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

-22- 4. He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers; * his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5. Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night, * nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6. For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, *nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day. 7. A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand; * but it shall not come nigh thee. 8. Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold * and see the reward of the ungodly. 9. For thou, Lord, art my hope; * thou hast set thine house of defense very high. 10. There shall no evil happen unto thee, * neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, * to keep thee in all thy ways.

-23- 12. They shall bear thee in their hands, * that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone. 13. Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder: * the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet. 14. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him; * I will set him up, because he hath known my Name. 15. He shall call upon me, and I will hear him; * yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honor. 16. With long life will I satisfy him, * and show him my salvation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

The Lord be in thy heart and upon thy lips, that thou mayest meetly and rightly confess thy sins, in the Name of the a Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. R. Amen.

The penitent then enumerates his sins, and, if desired, the Priest will give him counsel and advice, and before pronouncing absolution he may impose a penance. When the Priest wishes to absolve a penitent, after a penance enjoined and accepted, he shall say:

Almighty God have mercy upon thee, forgive thee thy sins, and bring thee to everlasting life. R. Amen.

-52- Then raising his right hand toward the penitent, he says:

The almighty and merciful Lord grant unto thee pardon, absolution, and remission of thy sins. R. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ absolve thee; and I by his authority absolve thee from every bond of excommunication (or suspension) and interdict, so far as I have power, and thou hast need. Furthermore I absolve thee from thy sins, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. R. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath left power to his Church to absolve all sinners who truly repent and believe in him, of his great mercy forgive thee thine offences; And by his authority committed to me, I absolve thee from all thy sins; in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. R. Amen.

The Penitent then makes his Confession, using the following or a similar formula: I confess to Almighty God, to all the Saints, and to thee, Father, that I have sinned very much, in thought, word, deed, and omission, by my own great fault. Since my last confession which was ______, I have committed these sins:

He confesses his sins and continues: For these and all other sins which I cannot now remember, I am very sorry. I will try to do better, and I humbly ask pardon of God; and of you Father, I ask for penance, advice and absolution. Amen.

-54- After the Confession is ended, the Priest may address a few words of counsel to the penitent, and may assign a suitable penance. When the Priest wishes to absolve a penitent, after a penance enjoined and accepted, he shall say:

HAVE mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness; * according to the multitude of thy mercies do away mine offenses. 2. Wash me throughly from my wickedness, * and cleanse me from my sin. 3. For I acknowledge my faults, * and my sin is ever before me. 4. Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight; * that thou mightest be justified in thy saying, and clear when thou shalt judge.

-56- 5. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness, * and in sin hath my mother conceived me. 6. But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts, * and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. 7. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; * thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness, * that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9. Turn thy face from my sins, * and put out all my misdeeds. 10. Make me a clean heart, O God, * and renew a right spirit within me. 11. Cast me not away from thy presence, * and take not thy holy Spirit from me. 12. O give me the comfort of thy help again, * and stablish me with thy free Spirit. 13. Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked, * and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

-57- 14. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou that art the God of my health; * and my tongue shall sing of thy righteousness. 15. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord, * and my mouth shall show thy praise. 16. For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee; * but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. 17. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: * a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not despise. 18. O be favorable and gracious unto Zion; * build thou the walls of Jerusalem. 19. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and ; * then shall they offer young bullocks upon thine . O God, the proud are risen against me; * and the congregations of violent men have sought after my soul, and have not set thee before their eyes. 15. But thou, O Lord God, art full of compassion and mercy, * long- suffering, plenteous in goodness and truth. 16. O turn thee then unto me, and have mercy upon me; * give thy strength unto thy servant, and help the son of thine handmaid. 17. I will pay my vows now in the presence of all his people: * right dear in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. 14. Behold, O Lord, how that I am thy servant; * I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid; thou hast broken my bonds in sunder.

-65- 15. I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, * and will call upon the Name of the Lord. 16. Inflame, O Lord, our minds and our hearts with the fire of the Holy Ghost; that we may serve thee with a chaste body, and please thee with a clean heart.

Declaration of Intention

I intend to assist at this celebration of the Holy Sacrifice (and to offer this Communion) for the praise of Almighty God, and of the whole Church triumphant; for my own benefit; for the benefit of the whole Church militant and expectant; for all in general who have commended themselves to my prayers; and in particular for ... and I pray that God may grant all those things which I now purpose for his glory, and which are according to his holy will.

-70- The following prayers may be said in preparation for Communion:

A Prayer of St. Ambrose

To the Table of thy most sweet Feast, O loving Lord, Jesus Christ, I, a sinner, presuming nothing on my own merits, but trusting in thy mercy and goodness, approach with fear and trembling. For my heart and my body are stained with many and grievous sins, my thoughts and my lips have not been carefully kept. Wherefore, O gracious God, O awful Majesty, I, in my misery, being brought into a great strait, turn to thee, the Fountain of mercy, to thee I hasten to be healed, and flee under thy protection: and thee, before whom as my Judge, I cannot stand, I long to have as my Savior. To thee, O Lord, I show my wounds, to thee I discover my shame. I know my sins, for which I am afraid, are many and great. My trust is in thy mercies, of which there is no end. Look therefore upon me with the eyes of thy mercy, O Lord Jesus

-71- Christ, eternal King, God and Man, crucified for man. Hearken unto me whose trust is in thee: have mercy upon me who am full of misery and sin, thou Fountain of mercy that will never cease to flow. Hail, Victim of Salvation, offered for me and all mankind upon the Altar of the Cross. Hail, noble and precious Blood, flowing from the wounds of my Crucified Lord Jesus Christ, and washing away the sins of the whole world. Remember, O Lord, thy creature, whom thou hast redeemed with thine own Blood. It grieves me that I have sinned, and I desire to amend what I have done. Take away therefore from me, O most merciful Father, all my sins and iniquities; that being purified both in soul and body, I may be made meet worthily to taste the Holy of Holies; and grant that this holy foretaste of thy Body and Blood, which I, unworthy, purpose to take, may be for the remission of my sins; the perfect cleansing of my faults; the driving away of shameful thoughts, and the renewal of good desires; the healthful performance of

-72- works well-pleasing unto thee; and the most sure protection of soul and body against the wiles of my enemies. Amen.

Prayer of Blessing

The almighty and merciful Lord grant unto me joy with peace, amendment of life, time for true repentance, the grace a and comfort of the Holy Ghost, and perseverance in good works. Amen.

These prayers may be said before Mass on the appointed days.

Sunday: A Prayer of St. Ambrose

O supreme High Priest and true chief , Jesus Christ, who didst offer thyself to God the Father a pure and spotless Victim upon the Altar of the Cross for us miserable sinners, and who didst give us thy Flesh to eat and thy Blood to drink, and didst ordain that Mystery in the power of the Holy Spirit, saying, "This do, in remembrance of me;"

-73- I pray thee, by the same Blood, the great price of our salvation; I pray thee, by that wonderful and unspeakable love wherewith thou didst vouchsafe so to love us miserable and unworthy, as to wash us from our sins in thy Blood, teach me, thy unworthy servant, by thy Holy Spirit, to approach so great a mystery with such reverence and honour, with such devotion and fear, as I ought and as it becometh me. Make me through thy grace always so to believe and understand, to conceive and firmly to hold, to think and to speak of this wondrous Mystery as shall please thee and benefit my soul. Let thy good spirit enter my heart, there to be heard without utterance, and without the sound of words speak all truth. For these things are exceeding deep and covered with a sacred . Of thy great mercy grant me to assist at this Solemnity with a clean heart and pure mind. Free my heart from all defiling and unholy, from all vain and hurtful thoughts. Fence me with the holy and faithful guard and powerful protection of thy blessed Angels, that the

-74- enemies of all good may go away ashamed. By the virtue of this great Mystery, and by the hand of thy holy Angels, drive away from me and all thy servants the hard spirit of pride and vain glory, of impurity and uncleanness, of doubting and mistrust. Let them be confounded that seek after my soul to destroy it: let them perish that seek my hurt.

Monday

King of virgins and Lover of chastity and innocence, extinguish in my frame, by the dew of thy heavenly blessing, the fuel of evil concupiscence, that so one even purity of soul and body may abide in me. Mortify in my members the lusts of the flesh, and all harmful emotions, and give me true and persevering chastity with thine other gifts which please thee in truth, so that I may with chaste body and pure heart offer unto thee the sacrifice of praise. For with what mighty contrition of heart and fountain of tears, with what

-75- reverence and awe, with what chastity of body and purity of soul, should that divine and heavenly Sacrifice be celebrated, wherein thy Flesh is indeed eaten, where thy Blood is indeed drunk, wherein things lowest and highest, earthly and divine, are united, where is the presence of the holy Angels, where thou art in a marvellous and unspeakable manner both Sacrifice and Priest.

Tuesday

Who can worthily celebrate this Sacrifice unless thou, O God, makest him worthy? I know, O Lord, yea, truly do I know, and this do confess to thy loving-kindness, that I am unworthy to approach so great a Mystery, by reason of my numberless sins and negligences; but I know and truly with my whole heart do I believe, and with my mouth confess, that thou canst make me worthy, who alone canst make that clean which proceedeth from that which is unclean, and sinners to be righteous and holy. By this thine

-76- Almighty power I beseech thee, O my God, to grant that I, a sinner, may assist at this Sacrifice with fear and trembling, with purity of heart and streams of tears, with spiritual gladness and heavenly joy; may my mind feel the sweetness of thy most blessed Presence, and the guardian- ship of thy holy Angels round about me.

Wednesday

For now, O Lord, mindful of thy venerable Passion, I draw near to thine altar, to offer thee that Sacrifice which thou hast instituted, and commanded to be offered in remembrance of thee for our well-being. Receive it, we beseech thee, O God Most High, for thy holy Church, and for the people whom thou hast redeemed with thy Blood. We bring before thee, O Lord, if thou wilt graciously vouchsafe to behold, the tribulations of the poor, the perils of the people, the groans of prisoners, the miseries of orphans, the necessities of strangers, the helplessness of the weak, the depression of the weary,

-77- the infirmities of the aged, the aspirations of the young, the vows of virgins, the lamentations of widows.

Thursday

For thou, O Lord, art merciful unto all and hatest nothing that thou hast made. Remember what is our substance, because thou art our Father and our God. Be not angry with us for ever, nor restrain the multitude of thy mercies upon us, for it is not in our righteousness that we pour forth our prayers before thy face, but of thy great compassion. Take from us our iniquities, and graciously kindle the fire of thy Holy Spirit within us. Take away the heart of stone from our flesh, and give us a heart of flesh, to love thee, choose thee, please thee, follow thee, enjoy thee. We pray thy mercy, O Lord, that thou wouldest vouchsafe graciously to look upon thy family attending on the ministry of thy holy Name, and that the prayers of none may be in vain, the petitions of none unfruitful, do thou put into our minds

-78- those prayers which thou art graciously pleased to hear and fulfil.

Friday

We beseech thee also, O Lord, Holy Father, for the souls of the faithful departed... that this great Sacrament of thy love may be unto them salvation and health, joy and refreshment. O Lord my God, grant them this day a great and abundant feast of thee, the living God, who didst come down from heaven, and gavest life unto the world, even of thy holy and blessed Flesh, the Lamb without spot, who takest away the sins of the world; even of that Flesh, which was taken of the holy and glorious Virgin Mary, and conceived of the Holy Ghost, and of that Fountain of mercy which the soldier's spear caused to flow from thy most sacred Side, that therewith enlarged and satiated, refreshed and comforted, they may rejoice in thy praise and glory.

-79- I pray thy mercy, O Lord, that on the bread to be offered unto thee may descend the fulness of thy benediction, and the sanctification of thy Divinity. May there descend also the invisible and incomprehensible Majesty of thy Holy Spirit, as it came down of old on the sacrifices of the fathers, which may make our oblations thy Body and Blood. And teach us, thy unworthy servants, to approach so great a Mystery with purity of heart and the devotion of tears, with reverence and trembling, so that thou mayest graciously and favorably receive this sacrifice for the good of all, living and departed.

Saturday

I intreat thee also, O Lord, by this most holy mystery of thy Body and Blood, wherewith we are daily fed, washed and sanctified in thy Church, and are made partakers of the One Supreme Divinity, grant unto me thy holy virtues, that fulfilled therewith I may draw near with a

-80- good conscience unto thy holy Altar, so that these Sacraments may be made unto me salvation and life; for thou hast said with thy holy and blessed mouth, "The Bread which I will give is my Flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. I am the Living Bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of this Bread, he shall live for ever."

O most sweet Bread, heal the palate of my heart, that I may taste the sweetness of thy love. Heal it of all infirmities, that I may find sweetness in nothing out of thee. O most pure Bread, having all delight and all savour, which ever refreshest us, and never failest, let my heart feed on thee, and may my inmost soul be fulfilled with the sweetness of thy savour. The Angels feed on thee fully. Let pilgrim man feed on thee after his measure, refreshed by this nourishment on his way. Holy Bread! Living Bread! Pure Bread! Who didst come down from heaven, and givest life unto the world; enter my heart, and cleanse me from all impurity of flesh and

-81- spirit. Come into my soul; heal and cleanse me within and without; be the protection and continual health of my soul and body, so that I may by a straight way arrive at thy kingdom, where, not as now in mysteries, but face to face, we shall behold thee: when thou shalt have delivered up the kingdom to God thy Father, and shalt be God, All in all; then shalt thou satisfy me with thyself by a wondrous fulness, so that I shall never hunger nor thirst any more. Who with the same God the Father and the Holy Ghost, livest...

-84- gladness: and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God, my God. V. Why art thou so heavy, O my soul: and why art thou so disquieted within me? R. O put thy trust in God: for I will yet give him thanks, which is the help of my countenance, and my God. V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. V. I will go unto the altar of God: R. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness. V. Our help is in the Name of the Lord: R. Who hath made heaven and earth. V. I confess to God Almighty, R. God Almighty have mercy upon thee, forgive thee thy sins, and bring thee to everlasting life. V. Amen. R. I confess to God Almighty, to Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and

-85- Paul, to all the Saints, and to thee, father, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word and deed, by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault. Wherefore I beg blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Saints, and thee, father, to pray for me to the Lord our God. V. God Almighty have mercy upon you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life. R. Amen. V. The Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto us pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins. R. Amen. V. Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, O God? R. That thy people may rejoice in thee. V. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. R. And grant us thy salvation. V. O Lord, hear my prayer. R. And let my cry come unto thee.

-86- V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, * the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and

-91- for our salvation came down from heaven, (here genuflect) and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; (rise) and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, a and the life of the world to come. Amen.

-92- V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. Let us pray.

The verse is sung by the Choir or said by the Celebrant. A hymn or anthem may be sung; a collection may be taken. As the priest prepares and offers bread and wine, he says the following prayers:

Accept, O holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, this unspotted host which I, unworthy servant, offer unto thee, my living and true God, for my innumerable sins, offenses and negligences, as also for those here present and for all faithful Christians, both living and dead, that it may avail me and them unto life everlasting. Amen.

O God, who in creating human nature hast wonderfully dignified it and still more wonderfully reformed it, grant that by the mystery of this water and wine, we may

-93- become partakers of his divine nature who deigned to partake of our human nature, thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God; throughout all ages of ages. Amen.

We offer unto thee, O Lord, the of salvation, beseeching thy mercy, that it may ascend before thy divine majesty as a sweet odor for our salvation and for that of the whole world. Amen.

Accept us, O Lord, in the spirit of humility and contrition of heart: and grant that the sacrifice we offer this day in thy sight may be pleasing to thee, O Lord God.

Come, O almighty and eternal God the Sanctifier, bless this sacrifice prepared for the glory of thy holy Name.

At High Mass, incense is set with the following prayers:

-94- Through the intercession of Blessed Michael the Archangel standing at the right hand of the altar of incense, and of all his elect, may the Lord vouch-safe to bless this incense, and to receive it for a sweet smelling savor. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Oblations, altar, Priest, servers, and people are censed while the Priest says:

May this incense, which thou hast blest, ascend unto thee, O Lord: and may thy mercy descend upon us. Let my prayer, O Lord, be set forth in thy sight as the incense: and let the lifting up of my hands be an evening sacrifice. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth, and keep the door of my lips: O let not mine heart be inclined to any evil thing, let me not be occupied in ungodly works (Psalm 141:1-3).

As the Priest gives up the , he says:

-95- The Lord kindle in us the fire of his love, and the flame of eternal charity. Amen.

The Priest now washes his hands, saying (Psalm 26:6):

I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord, and so will I go to thine altar. That I may show the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. Lord, I have loved the habitation of thine house, and the place where thine honor dwelleth. O shut not up my soul with the sinners, nor my life with the bloodthirsty: in whose hands is wickedness, and their right hand is full of gifts. But as for me, I will walk innocently: O deliver me and be merciful unto me. My foot standeth right, I will praise the Lord in the congrega- tions. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Receive, O Holy Trinity, this which we make to thee in memory of the

-96- passion, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in honor of blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, of blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all Saints; that it may be available to their honor and our salvation: and that they may vouchsafe to intercede for us in heaven, whose memory we celebrate on earth. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Celebrant continues:

V. Pray, brethren, that this my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty. R. May the Lord receive this sacrifice at thy hands, to the praise and glory of his Name, both to our benefit and that of all his holy Church.

Then he adds the Secret prayer(s), concluding with:

V. Throughout all ages of ages. R. Amen.

-97- The Celebrant then sings or says:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. Lift up your hearts. R. We lift them up unto the Lord. V. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. R. It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, just and availing unto salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty everlasting God.

Here a Proper is sung or said as appointed.

Through Christ our Lord, by whom the angels praise thy majesty, the Dominions adore thee, the Powers tremble, the Heavens and the heavenly Host and the blessed Seraphim join with one glad voice in extolling thee. To their voices we pray thee, let ours be added, while we say with humble praise:

-98- Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. a Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The

Therefore, most merciful Father, we humbly pray and beseech thee through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, that thou wouldst be pleased to accept and bless these gifts, these offerings, these holy, spotless sacrifices, which we offer thee in the first place for thy holy Catholic Church, that thou wouldst vouchsafe to keep her in peace under thy protection, to bring her to unity and to guide her throughout the world: likewise for our Father and Metropolitan N., for Bishop N., (for Bishop N.,) for the President of these United States, and for

-99- all Orthodox believers who hold the Catholic and apostolic faith.

Remember, O Lord, thy servants and all here present whose faith and devotion are known unto thee, for whom we offer, or who offer to thee this sacrifice of praise for themselves and those belonging to them, for the salvation of their souls, for their health and welfare, and who pay their vows to thee, the eternal, living and true God. Here specific intentions may be made.

In communion with, and venerating first the memory of the glorious and Ever- Virgin Mary, Mother of our Lord and God Jesus Christ; and also of thy blessed apostles and martyrs Peter and Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and Jude: Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Laurence, Chryso- gonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian and of all thy saints, through whose prayers grant that in all things we

-100- may be guarded by the help of thy protection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

We therefore pray thee, O Lord, mercifully to accept this offering of our service and that of all thy family; to order our days in thy peace, to deliver us from eternal damnation, and to number us in the flock of thine elect. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Which offering, we beseech thee, O God, to bless, consecrate, approve, make worthy and acceptable in every way, that it may become for us the Body and Blood of thy most beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Who, the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands and, with his eyes lifted up to heaven unto thee, God his almighty Father, giving thanks unto thee, he blessed, brake and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat ye all of this, for THIS IS MY BODY.

-101- The bell rings thrice for the elevation of the Host.

In like manner after he had supped, taking also this excellent chalice into his holy and venerable hands, again giving thanks unto thee, he blessed it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and drink ye all of this, for THIS IS THE CUP OF MY BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL TESTAMENT, THE MYSTERY OF FAITH, WHICH SHALL BE SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY UNTO THE REMISSION OF SINS. As oft as ye shall do these things, ye shall do them in remembrance of me.

The bell rings thrice for the elevation of the Chalice.

Wherefore, O Lord, we thy servants, as also thy holy people, calling to mind the blessed Passion of the same Christ, thy Son our Lord, his Resurrection from the dead and glorious Ascension into heaven, offer unto thy most excellent majesty of

-102- thy gifts bestowed upon us a pure host, a holy host, a spotless host, the holy bread of eternal life, and the chalice of everlasting salvation.

Upon which vouchsafe to look with a favorable and serene countenance, and to accept them as thou wert graciously pleased to accept the gifts of thy just servant Abel, and the sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham, and that which thy high priest Melchisedech offered unto thee, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim.

And we beseech thee, O Lord, to send down thy Holy Spirit upon these offerings, that he would make this bread the precious Body of thy Christ, and that which is in this Cup the precious Blood of thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ, transmuting them by thy Holy Spirit.

R. Amen. Amen. Amen.

The bell is rung thrice.

-103- We humbly beseech thee, almighty God, to command that these things be borne by the hands of thy holy angel to thine altar on high, into the presence of thy divine majesty, that so many of us as shall partake at this altar of the most sacred Body and Blood of thy Son, may be filled with all heavenly benediction. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Be mindful also, O Lord, of thy servants who are gone before us with the sign of faith, and who rest in the sleep of peace. (Here the departed are commemorated.) To them, O Lord, and to all who rest in Christ, grant we pray thee a place of refreshment, light and peace, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

To us sinners also, thy servants, confiding in the multitude of thy mercies, grant some lot and partnership with thy holy apostles and martyrs John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucia, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia

-104- and with all thy saints, into whose company we pray thee of thy mercy to admit us, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses. Through Christ our Lord, by whom O Lord, thou dost ever create, sanctify, quicken, bless and bestow upon us all these good things. For by him, and with him, and in him is to thee, God the Father almighty, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory, throughout all ages of ages. R. Amen.

Let us pray. Instructed by saving precepts and following thy divine institution, we presume to say:

People and Celebrant:

Our Father, * who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

-105- The Priest continues:

Deliver us, we beseech thee, O Lord, from all evils, past, present, and to come; and at the intercession of the blessed and glorious Mary, Ever-Virgin Mother of God, of thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, Andrew, and all thy Saints, graciously give peace in our time, that aided by the help of thy loving kindness, we may both be ever free from sin and secure from all disquietude. Through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God.

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread and then sings or says:

V. World without end. R. Amen.

V. The peace of the Lord be always with you. R. And with thy spirit.

-106- The following is then is sung or said:

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

In Masses for the Dead, in place of “have mercy upon us” is said “grant them rest”, and in place of “grant us thy peace”, is said: “grant them rest eternal.”

The following prayer is said, except in Masses for the Dead:

O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst say to thine Apostles, peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you, regard not our sins, but the faith of thy Church; and grant her that peace and unity which are agreeable to thy will. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.

-107- The Priest continues:

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who by the will of the Father and the cooperation of the Holy Ghost hast, by thy death, given life to the world, deliver me, I beseech thee, by this thy most holy Body and Blood, from all iniquities and from every evil. Make me ever obedient to thy commandments, and suffer me not to be ever separated from thee, who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the same Spirit, God, throughout all ages of ages. Amen.

Let not the participation of thy Body, O Lord Jesus Christ, which I albeit unworthy, receive, be to me for judgment and condemnation; but by thy goodness may it be a safeguard and remedy both to soul and body, who with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, livest and reignest, God, throughout all ages of ages. Amen.

At the Priest’s Communion, he says:

-108- I will take the bread of heaven and call upon the Name of the Lord. (Then thrice) Lord, I am not worthy: that thou shouldest enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. The bell is rung thrice.

As the Priest receives the Body, he says:

May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul unto everlasting life. Amen. After which, he says: What reward shall I give unto the Lord for all the benefits that he hath done unto me? I will receive the cup of salvation and call upon the Name of the Lord. I will call upon the Lord, which is worthy to be praised, so shall I be safe from mine enemies. He then receives the Precious Blood, saying: May the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul unto everlasting life. Amen.

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation:

-109- a Behold the Lamb of God; behold him that takest away the sins of the world.

The Celebrant and People respond three times:

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

The people say this prayer of preparation before receiving the Sacrament:

I believe, O Lord, and I confess that thou art truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who didst come into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. And I believe that this is truly thine own immaculate Body, and that this is truly thine own precious Blood. Wherefore I pray thee, have mercy upon me and forgive my transgressions both voluntary and involuntary, of word and of deed, of knowledge and of ignorance; and make me worthy to

-110- partake without condemnation of thine immaculate Mysteries, unto remission of my sins and unto life everlasting. Amen. Of thy Mystic Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communi- cant: for I will not speak of thy Mystery to thine enemies, neither will I give thee a kiss as did Judas; but like the thief will I confess thee: Remember me, O Lord, in thy Kingdom. Not unto judgment nor unto condemnation be my partaking of thy Holy Mysteries, O Lord, but unto the healing of soul and body.

The Orthodox Faithful, duly prepared, make their Communions at this time. The Body and are administered together with these words:

May the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve thy soul unto everlasting life.

During the ministration of Communion, hymns, Psalms, or anthems may be sung.

-111- At the ablutions, the Priest says:

What we have partaken with our mouth, O Lord, may we receive with a pure heart, and of a temporal gift, may it become to us an eternal remedy. May thy Body and Blood which I have received, cleave unto my heart, O Lord; and grant that no stain of sin may remain in me, having been fed with this pure and holy Sacrament. Who livest and reignest in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, throughout all ages of ages. Amen.

The proper Communion sentence is then said or sung. Then the priest, turning to the people, says:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. Let us pray.

The Celebrant then says the Postcommunion Collect(s).

-112- The Deacon, or the Celebrant, dismisses the people with these words:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

Then, if it is a day upon which the Gloria has been said, he turns to the people and says:

V. Ite missa est. R. Deo Gratias.

From the through Low Saturday “Alleluia, alleluia” is added to the dismissal and response.

At other times is said: V. Let us bless the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

Or, at a Requiem: V. May they rest in peace. R. Amen.

The Priest then says:

-113- Let the obedient performance of my bounden duty be pleasing unto thee, O Holy Trinity; and grant that this sacrifice which I, unworthy that I am, have offered in the sight of thy majesty, may be acceptable unto thee and may through thy mercy, obtain thy favor for myself and for all those in whose behalf I have offered it. Who livest and reignest, God, throughout all ages of ages. Amen.

The Bishop when present, or the Priest, gives the blessing; but note that the blessing is not given at a Requiem.

The blessing of God Almighty, the a Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit descend upon you, and remain with you always. R. Amen.

The people stand and the priest says:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

-114- V. The Beginning of the Holy Gospel according to John.

Or if another Gospel is to be read, he says:

V. The Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to N. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made; in him was life, and the life was the light of men; and the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He

-115- was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name; which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (Here genuflect) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us; and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the Only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

R. Thanks be to God.

And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Then is sung or said:

Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy. Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy. Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy. Christe, eleison Christ, have mercy. Christe, eleison or Christ, have mercy. Christe, eleison Christ, have mercy. Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy. Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy. Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O (Jesus) Christ, with the Holy Ghost, a art most high in the Glory of God the Father. Amen.

May the Lord be in my [thy] heart and on my [thy] lips, that I may [thou mayest] worthily attend to his Holy Gospel. Amen.

-120- At High Masses, incense is set with appropriate prayers and the Gospel is censed after the salutation. All standing, the Deacon or Priest reads the Gospel, first saying:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. The continuation (beginning) of the Holy Gospel according to______.

V. Let us pray.

The Offertory verse is sung by the Choir or said by the Celebrant. A hymn or anthem may be sung; a collection may be taken. As the priest prepares and offers bread and wine, he says the Offertory prayers, as on p. 93. The Celebrant continues:

-123- V. Pray, brethren, that this my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Father Almighty. R. May the Lord receive this sacrifice at thy hands, to the praise and glory of his Name, both to our benefit and that of all his holy Church.

Then he may add the Secret prayer(s), concluding with:

V. World without end. R. Amen.

The Priest continues:

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ's Church. Almighty and ever living God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept (these) our Oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty: beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church

-124- with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: And grant that all those who do confess thy holy name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love.

We beseech thee also, so to direct and dispose the hearts of all Christian Rulers, that they may truly and impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion and virtue.

Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all and other Ministers, especially our Father and Metropolitan N., and Bishop N., (and Bishop N.), that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments.

And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace; and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive

-125- thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.

And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity (the priest may commemorate specific names).

And we also a bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service. And give us grace so to follow the good examples of blessed Mary and all thy Saints, that, through their intercessions, we (with them) may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. R. Amen.

Here may be said the following communion devotions. But note, that they may be omitted, or said immediately

-126- before communion, at the discretion of the priest.

V. Ye who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors, and intend to lead a new life, following the command- ments of God, and walking from hence- forth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confes- sion to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.

R. Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable.

-127- Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life. To the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

V. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of His great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Hear what comfortable words our Savior Christ saith unto all who truly turn to him.

Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. St. Matt. xi. 28.

-128- So God loved the world, that he gave His only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. St. John iii. 16.

Hear also what St. Paul saith. This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I Tim. i. 15.

Hear also what St. John saith. If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins. I St. John ii. 1, 2.

The Celebrant sings or says:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. Lift up your hearts. R. We lift them up unto the Lord. V. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. R. It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty that we should at all times, and in all

-129- places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said as appointed.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. a Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosannah in the highest.

The Canon of the Mass

All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the

-130- Cross for our redemption; who (by his own oblation of himself once offered) made a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a per-petual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again:

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, take, eat, THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU; DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

The bell rings thrice for the elevation of the Host.

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; FOR THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU, AND FOR MANY, FOR THE

-131- REMISSION OF SINS; DO THIS AS OFT AS YE SHALL DRINK IT, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

The bell rings thrice for the elevation of the Chalice.

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy Divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumer- able benefits procured unto us by the same.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe to send down thy holy Spirit upon these thy gifts

-132- and creatures of bread and wine, that they may be changed into the Body and Blood of thy most dearly beloved Son. Grant that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood.

R. Amen. Amen. Amen.

The bell is rung thrice.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion.

And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living

-133- sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly bene- diction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him.

Be mindful also, O Lord, of thy servants who are gone before us with the sign of faith, and who rest in the sleep of peace, especially N. and N. (Here, the names of the departed are remembered.) To them, O Lord, and to all who rest in Christ grant we pray thee a place of refreshment, light and peace. To us sinners also, thy servants, confiding in the multitude of thy mercies, grant some lot and partnership with thy holy Apostles and martyrs (John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucia, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all thy Saints) into whose company we pray thee of thy mercy to admit us.

-134- And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. R. Amen.

Let us pray. And now as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

-135- In some places is added: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The Priest continues:

R. Amen.

-136- V. The peace of the Lord be always with you. R. And with thy spirit.

The following is then is sung or said:

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

In Masses for the Dead, in place of “have mercy upon us” is said “grant them rest”, and in place of “grant us thy peace”, is said: “grant them rest eternal.” The Priest continues with his Communion Prayers, as on p. 107. In some places the people join the Priest in saying this prayer:

We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. we are not worthy so

-137- much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may ever- more dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The bell is rung thrice as the Priest receives Communion. Then facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation: a Behold the Lamb of God; behold him that takest away the sins of the world.

The Celebrant and People respond three times:

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed.

-138- The people say this prayer of preparation before receiving the Sacrament:

I believe, O Lord, and I confess that thou art truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who didst come into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. And I believe that this is truly thine own immaculate Body, and that this is truly thine own precious Blood. Wherefore I pray thee, have mercy upon me and forgive my transgressions both voluntary and involuntary, of word and of deed, of knowledge and of ignorance; and make me worthy to partake without condemnation of thine immaculate Mysteries, unto remission of my sins and unto life everlasting. Amen. Of thy Mystic Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communi- cant: for I will not speak of thy Mystery to thine enemies, neither will I give thee a kiss as did Judas; but like the thief will I confess thee: Remember me, O Lord, in thy Kingdom. Not unto judgment nor unto condemnation be

-139- my partaking of thy Holy Mysteries, O Lord, but unto the healing of soul and body.

The Orthodox Faithful, duly prepared, make their Communions at this time. Holy Communion is administered with these words:

The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is given for thee, preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life. Take and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for thee, and feed on him in thy heart by faith, with thanksgiving. The Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which was shed for thee, preserve thy body and soul unto ever- lasting life. Drink this in remembrance that Christ's blood was shed for thee, and be thankful.

Or if the Body and Blood of Christ are administered together: The Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was given and shed for thee...

-140- During the ministration of Communion, hymns, Psalms, or anthems may be sung.

At the ablutions, the Priest says:

What we have partaken with our mouth, O Lord, may we receive with a pure heart, and of a temporal gift, may it become to us an eternal remedy. May thy Body and Blood which I have received, cleave unto my heart, O Lord; and grant that no stain of sin may remain in me, having been fed with this pure and holy Sacrament. Who livest and reignest in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, throughout all ages of ages. Amen.

The proper Communion sentence is then said or sung. Then follows:

V. Let us pray.

R. Almighty and ever living God, we most heartily thank thee, for that thou dost vouchsafe to feed us who have duly received these holy mysteries, with

-141- the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy ever- lasting kingdom, by the merits of his most precious death and passion. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works asthou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Then the priest, turning to the people, says:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

-142- V. Let us pray.

The Celebrant then says the Post- communion Collect(s). The Deacon, or the Celebrant, dismisses the people with these words:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

Then, if it is a day upon which the Gloria has been said, he turns to the people and says:

V. Depart in peace. R. Thanks be to God.

From the Easter Vigil through Low Saturday “Alleluia, alleluia” is added to the dismissal and response.

At other times is said: V. Let us bless the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

Or, at a Requiem:

-143- V. May they rest in peace. R. Amen.

The Priest then says:

Let the obedient performance of my bounden duty be pleasing unto thee, O Holy Trinity; and grant that this sacrifice which I, unworthy that I am, have offered in the sight of thy majesty, may be acceptable unto thee and may through thy mercy, obtain thy favor for myself and for all those in whose behalf I have offered it. Who livest and reignest, God, throughout all ages of ages. Amen.

The Bishop when present, or the Priest, gives the blessing; but note that the blessing is not given at a Requiem.

The Peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the a blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the holy Spirit, be

-144- amongst you, and remain with you always. R. Amen.

The people stand and the priest says:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made; in him was life, and the life was the light of men; and the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness compre-

-145- hended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

-146- Thanksgiving after Mass

Strengthen us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy most gracious favour, and further us with thy continual help: that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. , save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me.

-151- Communion of the Sick

Upon entering the room the Priest makes preparation and says

V. Peace be to this house. R. And to all that dwell in it.

The Priest then takes and sprinkles the sick person and the room while saying

Thou shalt purge me, * O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be clean: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Ps.51:1. Have mercy upon me, O God: after thy great goodness. V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son; and to the Holy Ghost; R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Thou shalt purge me...

Let us pray: Graciously hear us, O Lord Holy, Father Almighty, Everlasting God: and vouchsafe to send thy holy Angel from heaven; to guard and cherish, to protect and visit, and to defend all who dwell in this place. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

The following general confession is then said, unless a private confession is made

I confess to God Almighty, to Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, to all the Saints, and to thee, father, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word and deed, by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault. Wherefore I beg blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, all the Saints, and thee, father, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

-153- V. God Almighty have mercy upon you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life. R. Amen.

V. The Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto us pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins. R. Amen.

The Priest then takes the Sacrament from the and raises it saying a Behold the Lamb of God; behold him that taketh away the sins of the world.

The Priest and People respond three times,

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.

The people then say this prayer of preparation before receiving the Sacrament:

-154- I believe, O Lord, and I confess that thou art truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who didst come into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. Amen. Of thy Mystic Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communicant: for I will not speak of thy Mystery to thine enemies, neither will I give thee a kiss as did Judas; but like the thief will I confess thee: Remember me, O Lord, in thy Kingdom. Not unto judgment nor unto condemnation be my partaking of thy Holy Mysteries, O Lord, but unto the healing of soul and body.

-155- The Priest administers the Sacrament to the sick person saying

The Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve thy soul unto everlasting life.

The Priest cleanses his fingers and then says

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. Let us pray: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God, we faithfully beseech thee that the most Sacred Body of our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son, which our brother (sister) hath received, may avail for the healing both of body and soul: who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. R. Amen.

The Blessing of God almighty, the a Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, descend upon you and remain with you always. R. Amen.

-156- Visitation of the Sick

All the following prayers may be said or omitted at the discretion of the Priest, as time and the condition of the sick person may demand. Upon entering the sick person's room the Priest says:

V. Peace be to this house. R. And to all that dwell in it.

In the sick room the Priest sprinkles the sick person, the bed and the room, and says:

Thou shalt purge me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be clean: thou shalt wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Then he ministers to the sick person in this or other like manner. And he may say the following Psalm over the sick person.

-157- PSALM 91 Qui habitat Tone

WHOSO dwelleth under the defense of the Most High, * shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2. I will say unto the Lord, Thou art my hope, and my stronghold; * my God, in him will I trust. 3. For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter, * and from the noisome pestilence. 4. He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers; * his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5. Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night, * nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6. For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, * nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day. 7. A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand; * but it shall not come nigh thee.

-159- 16. With long life will I satisfy him, * and show him my salvation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, * world without end. Amen.

V. Kyrie eléison. R. Christe eléison. V. Kyrie eléison.

V. Our Father...

V. And lead us not into temptation. R. But deliver us from evil. V. Save thy servant. R. My God, who trusteth in thee. V. Send him help, O Lord, from the sanctuary. R. And strengthen him out of Sion. V. Let the enemy have no advantage over him. R. Nor the son of wickedness have power to hurt him.

-160- V. Be unto him O Lord, a tower of strength. R. From the face of the enemy. V. The Lord comfort him. R. When he lieth sick upon his bed. V. O Lord, hear my prayer. R. And let my cry come unto thee. V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. Let us pray...

The following, or other appropriate prayers (see p. 163ff), are said.

O God, whose property is ever to have mercy and to forgive: receive our supplication; that we and this thy servant, who are tied and bound by the chains of our sins, may by the pitifulness of thy great mercy be loosed from the same.

O God, the only support of the frailty of men, shew forth the might of thy succour on this thy servant (who is sick): that by the help of thine availing mercy he may

-161- be worthy to be restored in health to thy holy church.

Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord God, that this thy servant may enjoy perpetual health of body and soul: and, at the glorious intercession of blessed Mary ever Virgin, be delivered from present sadness, and rejoice in everlasting gladness. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

The blessing of God almighty, the a Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, descend upon thee, and abide with thee alway. R. Amen.

Then the Priest sprinkles the sick person with holy Water.

-162- Prayers for the Sick

For a Sick Person

O Father of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need; we humbly beseech thee to behold, visit, and relieve thy sick servant N., for whom our prayers are desired. Look upon him with the eyes of thy mercy; comfort him with a sense of thy goodness; preserve him from the temptations of the enemy; and give him patience under his affliction. In thy good time, restore him to health, and enable him to lead the residue of his life in thy fear and to thy glory; and grant that finally he may dwell with thee in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For a Sick Child

Heavenly Father, watch with us, we pray thee, over the sick child for whom our prayers are offered, and grant that he may be restored to that perfect health which it

-163- is thine alone to give; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For One About to Undergo an Operation

Almighty God our heavenly Father, we beseech thee graciously to comfort thy servant in his suffering, and to bless the means provided for his cure. Fill his heart with confidence, that though he be sometime afraid, he yet may put his trust in thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Those under Affliction

O merciful God and heavenly Father, who hast taught us in thy holy Word that thou dost not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men; look with pity, we beseech thee, upon the sorrows of thy servant; for whom our prayers are offered. Remember him, O Lord, in mercy; endue his soul with patience; comfort him with a sense of thy goodness;

-164- lift up thy countenance upon him, and give him peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for those in Mental Darkness

O Heavenly Father, we beseech thee to have mercy upon thy children who are living in mental darkness or despair. Restore them to strength of mind and joyfulness of spirit, and give them comfort, health and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer Attributed to the Apostle Matthew by St. Ambrose of Milan

Thee alone I follow, Lord Jesus, who heals my wounds. For what shall separate me from the love of God, which is in thee. Shall tribulation, or distress, or famine? I am held fast as though by nails, and fettered by the bonds of charity. Remove from me, O Lord Jesus, with thy potent sword, the corruption of my sins. Secure me in the bonds of thy love; cut away what is corrupt in me. Come quickly and

-165- make an end of my many, my hidden and secret afflictions. Open the wound lest the evil humor spread. With thy new washing, cleanse in me all that is stained. Hear me, you earthly men, who in your sins bring forth drunken thoughts: I have found a Physician. He dwells in Heaven and distributes His healing on earth. He alone can heal my pains Who Himself has none. He alone Who knows what is hidden, can take away the grief of my heart, the fear of my soul - Jesus Christ. Christ is grace, Christ is life, Christ is Resurrection! Amen.

Thanksgiving for Recovery

O Lord God, giver of life and health; I most heartily thank thee, that in thy mercy, thou hast delivered me from sickness and affliction, and with a grateful heart I desire to offer unto thy fatherly goodness myself, my soul and body, to be a living sacrifice unto thee, always praising and magnifying thy loving- kindness in the midst of thy holy Church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

-166- Prayers at the Time of Death

Order of the Commendation of a Soul

The Parish Priest, vested in and violet , with one Clerk, if he may be had, carrying a vessel of holy Water, enters the place and says:

In the sick room the Priest, when aspersing, says: Thou shalt purge me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be clean: thou shalt wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Then he gives the image of our Savior crucified to the sick person to kiss, and by effectual words lifts him up to hope of eternal salvation, and sets the image before him, that, looking upon it, he may receive hope of salvation.

Then, while the soul is troubled in the agony of its passing, the following Prayers are said:

-170- Go forth, Christian soul, from this world, in the Name of God the omnipotent Father, who created thee: in the Name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who suffered for thee: in the Name of the Holy Spirit, who hath been poured out on thee: in the name of the glorious and holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God: in the name of blessed Joseph, illustrious spouse of the same Virgin: in the name of Angels and Archangels: in the name of Thrones and Dominations: in the name of Prince- doms and of Powers: in the name of Virtues, Cherubim and Seraphim: in the name of Patriarchs and Prophets: in the name of holy Apostles and Evangelists: in the name of holy Martyrs and Confessors: in the name of holy Monks and Hermits: in the name of holy Virgins, and all Saints of God, both men and women. May thy place today be found in peace, and thy dwelling in holy Sion. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

-171- O merciful God, O gracious God, O God, who according to the multitude of thy mercies dost blot out the sins of them that repent, and by pardon and remission dost do away the guilt of their former offences: look mercifully on this thy servant (handmaid) N., and graciously hearken unto him, who by sincere confession doth seek remission of all his sins. Renew in him, most loving Father, whatsoever hath been corrupted by earthly frailty, or decayed by the fraud of the devil: and join this member, which thou hast redeemed, to the unity of the body of the Church. Have mercy, O Lord, upon his groaning, have mercy on his tears: and forasmuch as he putteth his whole trust in thy mercy admit him to the Sacrament of thy reconciliation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Note that any or all of the following forms of devotion may be used, as time may permit.

-172- I commend thee, dearest brother (sister), to Almighty God, and commit thee to His care, whose creature thou art; that when thou shalt have paid the debt of all mankind by death, thou mayest return to thy Maker, who formed thee out of the dust of the earth.

When, therefore, thy soul shall depart from the body, may the shining company of the Angels meet thee: may the council of the Apostles draw near to thee: may the triumphant army of white-robed Martyrs come to meet thee: may the glorious band of Confessors, crowned with lilies, encompass thee: may the choir of joyful Virgins receive thee: and may an embrace of blessed repose enfold thee in the bosom of the Patriarchs: may Saint Joseph, the most loving Patron of the dying, lift thee up to great hope: may the holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God, graciously turn her eyes toward thee: may the face of Jesus Christ appear to thee gentle and joyful, and may He give thee a

-173- place among those who stand before Him for ever.

Mayest thou never know the horror of darkness, nor the flames of hell, nor the bitter pains of eternal death. May the most wicked Satan, with his followers give way before thee: may he tremble at thy coming in the company of Angels, and flee away into the confusion of everlasting night. Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: let them also that hate Him flee before Him. Like as the smoke vanisheth, so shalt thou drive them away: and like as wax melteth at the fire, so let the ungodly perish at the presence of God: but let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God. May all the legions of hell be confounded and put to shame, and may the ministers of Satan not dare to stop thee in thy way. May Christ, who was crucified for thee, deliver thee from torment. May Christ, who vouchsafed to die for thee, deliver thee from eternal death. May Christ, the Son of the living God, place thee in the ever-verdant pastures of his paradise: and

-174- may He, the true Shepherd number thee among His sheep. May He absolve thee from all thy sins, and place thee at His right hand, in the portion of His elect. Mayest thou behold thy Redeemer face to face, and standing alway in His presence, gaze with happy eyes on the open vision of truth. And thus placed amongst the ranks of the Blessed, mayest thou enjoy the sweetness of the contemplation of God for ever and ever. Amen.

-175- Receive, O Lord, thy servant (handmaid), into the place of salvation for which he hopeth through thy mercy. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), from all the dangers of hell, and from the bonds of punishment, and from all tribulations. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Enoch and Elias from the common death of the world. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Noah from the flood. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Abraham from Ur of the Chaldees. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Job from his afflictions. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Isaac from the sacrifice, and from the hand of his father Abraham. Amen.

-176- Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Lot from Sodom and from the flame of fire. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Moses from the hand of Pharaoh, king of the Egyptians. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Daniel from the den of lions. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver the three children from the burning fiery furnace, and from the hand of the unjust king. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Susanna from false accusation. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver David from the hand of King Saul, and from the hand of Goliath. Amen. Deliver, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid), as thou didst deliver Peter and Paul from prison. Amen.

-177- And as thou didst deliver the most blessed Thecla, thy Virgin and Martyr, from three most cruel torments, so vouchsafe to deliver the soul of this thy servant (handmaid), and make him to rejoice with thee in heavenly felicity. Amen.

We commend to thee, O Lord, the soul of thy servant (handmaid) N., and we beseech thee, O Lord Jesu Christ, Savior of the world, that thou, who for his sake didst of thy mercy come down to earth, wouldest not refuse him a place in the bosom of thy Patriarchs. Acknowledge, O Lord, thy creature not made by strange gods, but by thee the only living and true God: for there is none other God beside thee, nor any works like unto thy works.

Make his soul, O Lord, to rejoice in thy presence, and remember not his old sins and excesses which have been provoked by the violence of evil desire. For though he hath sinned, yet hath he not denied the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, but

-178- hath believed, and hath had a zeal for God within him and hath faithfully adored God, who made all things.

Remember not, O Lord, we beseech thee, the sins of his youth and his ignorances: but, according to thy great mercy, be mindful of him in the brightness of thy glory. Let the heavens be opened to him, let the Angels rejoice with him. Receive thy servant (handmaid), O Lord, into thy kingdom.

Let Saint Michael, the Archangel of God, who merited the princedom of the heavenly host, receive him. Let the holy Angels of God come forth to meet him and lead him to the heavenly city Jerusalem. Let blessed Peter the Apostle, to whom by God were given the keys of the kingdom of heaven, receive him. Let Saint Paul the Apostle, who was counted worthy to be a vessel of election, assist him. Let Saint John the chosen Apostle of God, to whom were revealed the secrets of heaven, intercede for him. Let all the

-179- holy Apostles, to whom was given by the Lord the power of binding and loosing, pray for him.

Let all the Saints and Elect of God, who in this world have suffered torments for the Name of Christ, intercede for him, that, loosed from the bonds of the flesh, he may be worthy to attain unto the glory of the heavenly kingdom, through the gift of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth for ever and ever. Amen.

May the most merciful Virgin Mary, Mother of God who is a most kind comforter of the afflicted, commend the spirit of N., the servant (handmaid) of God, to her Son, that by her motherly intercession he may not fear the terrors of death; but may enter rejoicing in her company into the mansion of that heavenly country which his soul desireth. Amen.

-180- To thee, I flee, holy Joseph, Patron of the dying; to thee, at whose blessed passing Jesus and Mary stood by, keeping watch; by this twofold and most dear pledge, I earnestly commend the soul of this servant (handmaid) N., now laboring in its last agony; that through thy protection it may be delivered from the snares of the devil and from eternal death, and may be worthy to attain unto everlasting joys. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

-181- When the soul has gone forth from the body the following shall be said straightway:

Come to his aid, ye Saints of God; come to meet him ye Angels of the Lord, * Receiving his soul, * Offering it in the sight of the Most High.

May Christ receive thee, who hath called thee, and may the Angels lead thee to Abraham's bosom.

Receiving his soul * Offering it in sight of the Most high.

Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him * Offering it in the sight of the Most High.

V. Lord, have mercy upon us. R. Christ, have mercy upon us. V. Lord, have mercy upon us.

Our Father, * who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

V. God forbid that I should glory: R. Save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us pray. Almighty God, we beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was

-225- contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost ever, one God, world without end. R. Amen.

Stanzas of the hymn, Stabat Mater, may be sung before each station.

At the Cross her station keeping Stood the mournful mother weeping, Where he hung, the dying Lord.

For her soul of joy bereaved, Bowed with anguish, deeply grieved, Felt the sharp and piercing sword.

I. Jesus is Condemned to Death

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

-226- And straightaway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate. And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. Then delivered he him unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.

V. God spared not his own Son: R. But delivered him up for us all.

Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. R. Amen.

-227- Who, on Christ's dear mother gazing, Pierced by anguish so amazing, Born of woman, would not weep?

II. Jesus Takes up His Cross

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha. Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered. He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.

-228- V. The Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all: R. For the transgression of his people was he stricken.

Let us pray. Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified; Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Who, on Christ's dear mother thinking Such a cup of sorrow drinking, Would not share her sorrows deep?

III. Jesus Falls the First Time

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

-229- Christ Jesus, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name. O come, let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our Maker, for he is the Lord our God.

V. Surely he hath borne our griefs: R. And carried our sorrows.

Let us pray. O God, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright; grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

-230- For his people's sins chastised, She beheld her Son despised, Scourged, and crowned with thorns entwined.

IV. Jesus Meets His Mother

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

What shall I testify unto thee? What shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I compare to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? For thy ruin is deep as the sea: who can heal thee? Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. The Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

V. A sword shall pierce through thine own soul also: R. That the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

-231- Let us pray. We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts; that, as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Saw him then from judgment taken, And in death by all forsaken, Till his spirit he resigned.

V. The Cross is Laid upon Simon of Cyrene

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. If any man will come after me, let him deny

-232- himself, and take up his cross and follow me. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for my yoke is easy, and my burden light.

V. Whosoever doth not bear his cross and come after me: R. Cannot be my disciple.

Let us pray. O God, whose blessed Son did overcome death for our salvation: Mercifully grant that we who have his glorious passion in remembrance may take up our cross daily and follow him; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Jesus, may her deep devotion Stir in me the same emotion, Fount of love, Redeemer kind.

-233- VI. A Woman Wipes the Face of Jesus

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

He hath no form or comeliness; and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him: he was despised, and we esteemed him not. His visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men. He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

V. Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts: R. Show us the light of thy countenance, and we shall be whole.

-234- Let us pray. O God, who before the passion of thine only begotten Son didst reveal his glory upon the holy mount: Grant unto us thy servants, that in faith beholding the light of his countenance, we may be strengthened to bear the cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory: through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

That my heart fresh ardor gaining, And a purer love attaining, May with thee acceptance find.

VII. Jesus Falls the Second Time

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

Surely he hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He

-235- was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: for the transgression of his people was he stricken.

V. But as for me, I am a worm and no man: R. A very scorn of men, and the outcast of my people.

Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who, of thy tender love towards mankind, hast sent thy Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind should follow the example of his great humility; Mercifully grant that we may both follow the example of his patience, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

True repentance, Jesus, win me: Savior print thy wounds within me. Brand them on my stubborn heart.

-236- VIII. Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

And there followed him a great company of people, and of women which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning unto them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children."

V. They that sow in tears: R. Shall reap in joy.

Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy,

-237- perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

As thou bought'st, through tribulation, In thy passion, my salvation, Let me bear therein my part.

IX. Jesus Falls the Third Time

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

O my people, what have I done unto thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me. Because I brought thee forth from the land of Egypt, thou hast prepared a Cross for thy Savior. Because I led thee through the desert forty years, and fed thee with manna, and brought thee into a land exceeding good, thou hast prepared a Cross for thy Savior. What more could I have done unto thee that I have not done?

-238- V. He was led as a sheep to the slaughter: R. And like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth.

Let us pray. Keep, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy Church with thy perpetual mercy; and, because the frailty of man without thee cannot but fall, keep us ever by thy help from all things hurtful and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation; through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Let me mourn, O Lord, beside thee For the sins which crucified thee, While my life remains in me.

X. Jesus is Stripped of His Garments

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

-239- And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, place of a skull, they gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, "They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots."

V. They gave me gall to eat: R. And when I was thirsty they gave me vinegar to drink.

Let us pray. O Lord God, whose blessed Son, our Savior, gave his back to the smiters and hid not his face from shame: Grant us grace to take joyfully the sufferings of the present time, in full assurance of the glory that shall be revealed; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

-240- Take beneath the cross my station. And in all thy desolation so unite myself with thee.

XI. Jesus is Nailed to the Cross

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified him. And with him they crucified two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, "And he was numbered with the transgressors." O my people, what have I done unto thee? I did raise thee on high with great power: and thou hast hanged me upon the gibbet of the Cross.

V. I, if I be lifted up: R. Will draw all men unto me.

-241- Let us pray. O God, who by the passion of thy blessed Son hast made the instrument of shameful death to be unto us the means of life and peace: Grant us so to glory in the Cross of Christ, that we may gladly suffer shame and loss; for the sake of the same thy Son our Lord. R. Amen.

Jesus, great beyond all other, Turn not from me, heav'nly brother, Let me too bewail thy pain.

XII. Jesus Dies on the Cross

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, "Woman, behold thy son!" Then saith he to the disciple, "Behold thy mother!" When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished." And when he had

-242- cried with a loud voice, he said, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." And he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

All kneel. Then may be said the Our Father and the Hail Mary silently, after which all rise.

V. Christ for our sake became obedient unto death: R. Even the death of the Cross.

Let us pray. O God, who for our redemption didst give thine onlybegotten Son to the death of the Cross, and by his glorious resurrection hast delivered us from the power of our enemy; Grant us so to die daily from sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through the same thy Son Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Let my soul, thy death declaring, Thy unsparing passion sharing, Count thy bruises one by one.

-243- XIII. The Body of Jesus is Placed in the Arms of His Mother

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

All ye that pass by, behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. Mine eyes do fail with tears, my soul is troubled; my heart is poured out in grief because of the downfall of my people. Call me not Naomi (which is Pleasant), call me Mara (which is Bitter); for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.

V. Her tears are on her cheeks: R. She hath none to comfort her.

Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, merciful Lord, to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve thee with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

-244- Let thy stripes and scourging smite me; At thy holy Cross requite me, Let thy blood refresh me there.

XIV. Jesus is Laid in the Tomb

V. We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, R. Because by thy holy Cross thou hast redeemed the world.

When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple; he went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

V. Thou shalt not leave my soul in hell: R. Neither shalt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.

-245- Let us pray. Grant, O Lord, that as we are baptized into the death of thy blessed Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, so by continual mortifying our corrupt affection we may be buried with him; and that through the grave, and gate of death, we may pass to our joyful resurrection; for his merits, who died, and was buried, and rose again for us, the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

O how sad and sore distressed Now was she, that mother blessed Of the sole-begotten One.

Deep the woe of her affliction, When she saw the crucifixion Of her everglorious Son.

V. O Savior of the world, who by thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeemed us R. Save us and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord.

-246- Let us pray. Almighty Father, who hast given thine only Son to die for our sins, and to rise again for our justification; Grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness, that we may always serve thee in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. R. Amen. a The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost be with us all evermore. R. Amen.

-256- Orthodox Church; beseeching thee that thou wouldest give peace to our rulers; that thou wouldest forgive us our sins; that thou wouldest restore health to the sick, and to afford to the fallen the means to repair the error of their ways; that for those in captivity and bondage, and for those who are journeying in foreign places, thou wouldest obtain freedom and help to return to their native land; that thy faithful servants who are travelers on the sea or on land or in the air may have a prosperous voyage, and at length reach a haven of safety; that those who are in trouble may find consolation; that those who suffer oppression, comfort and relief; that thou wilt in thy love send thy holy Angel to be our guide and protector here, and wheresoever we may be; that thou wilt give the blessing of mutual charity to those that are at variance, and the true faith to the unbelieving; and finally, that to the faithful departed thou wilt give eternal rest. Amen.

-257- A Daily Prayer for Assistance

O Lord God Almighty, King of eternal glory, who hast made the heavens and hast broken down the gates of hell, restrain, I beseech thee, the bold attacks of my enemies; save me from the malice of those who hate me, so that their wickedness prevail not against me. In thy love for me, and through the intercession of thine elect, deign so to guide my life that I may walk without offending thee or being scoffed at by godly men. Open to me wide the arms of thy love, and show unto me the multitude of thy mercy. Grant to me length of days and time for repentance, so that the prince of darkness may have no power over my soul, free me, O Lord, from the hands of my enemies, visible and invisible, and bring me into the company of thy saints, that I may praise and glorify thy Name. Amen.

-272- Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; * Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise thee: * the goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee. The noble army of martyrs praise thee: * the holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee, The Father of an infinite majesty, thine adorable, true, and only Son, * also the Holy Ghost the Comforter. Thou art the King of glory, O Christ: * thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, * thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, * thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.

-273- We believe that thou shalt come to be our judge: * we therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints, * in glory everlasting. O Lord, save thy people, and bless thine heritage; * Govern them and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify thee; * And we worship thy Name ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin; * O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let thy mercy be upon us; as our trust is in thee. * O Lord, in thee have I trusted; Let me never be confounded.
