November in Hanau geboren. 1902–05: Musikunterricht beim Vater. Mit seinen Geschwistern ist Hindemith als »Frankfurter Kindertrio« in der schlesischen Heimat des Vaters unterwegs. 1908–13: Geigenstudium am Hoch’schen Konservatorium in Frankfurt am Main sowie Komposi- tionsunterricht bei Arnold Mendelssohn und Bernhard Sekles. 1915: Hindemith wird Konzertmeister der Frankfurter Oper (bis 1923) und Mitglied des Rebner- Quartetts (bis 1921). Einsatz als Militärmusiker an der Westfront. 1919: Der Verlag Schott gibt erste Werke heraus. 1921: Die Operneinakter »Mörder, Hoffnung der Frauen« und »Das Nusch-Nuschi« lösen in Stuttgart einen Theaterskandal aus. In Donaueschingen erklingt das Quartett op. 16. 1922: Uraufführung der Kammermusik Nr. 1 op. 24a für Orchester und des Weihnachtsmärchens mit Gesang und Tanz »Tuttifäntchen«. Gründung des Amar-Quartetts mit Hindemith als Bratscher. 1923: Er gibt die Konzertmeisterposition auf und unternimmt mit den Amar-Quartett Konzertreisen durch ganz Europa. Es entsteht »Das Marienleben« op. 27. 1924: Heirat mit Gertrud Rottenberg. Bis 1927 schreibt Hindemith die Kammermusiken op. 36 und 46 für je ein Solo-Instrument (Klavier, Cello, Violine, Viola, Viola d’amore, Orgel). 1926: Uraufführung der Oper »Cardillac« nach E. T. A. Hoffmann in Dresden. 1927–29: Er erhält einen Ruf an die Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. Beginn einer solistischen Kon- zerttätigkeit. Zusammenarbeit mit Brecht und Eisler. Uraufführung der Oper »Neues vom Tage«. 1933: Nach der Machtergreifung durch die Nationalsozialisten wird Hindemiths Musik als »kultur- bolschewistisch« verurteilt und 1936 schließlich verboten. 1934–36: Wilhelm Furtwängler führt erstmals die Sinfonie »Mathis der Maler« auf (Instrumental- stücke aus der gleichnamigen Oper). Hindemith lässt sich von seiner Hochschultätigkeit beur- lauben. Er unternimmt Reisen in die Türkei, um beim Aufbau des dortigen Musiklebens zu helfen. Das Bratschenkonzert »Der Schwanendreher« wird 1935 in Amsterdam uraufgeführt. 1937/38: Nachdem er seine Hochschulprofessur gekündigt hat, unternimmt er Konzerttourneen in die USA. Uraufführung der »Symphonischen Tänze« und der Oper »Mathis der Maler«. Das Ballett »Nobilissima Visione« entsteht. Hindemith geht ins Exil: zunächst in die Schweiz, später in die USA. 1941: Ernennung zum Professor für Musiktheorie an der Yale University. 1944: Uraufführung der »Sinfonischen Metamorphosen« in New York. 1946: Er nimmt die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Das »Flieder-Requiem« (»A Requiem For Those We Love«) auf Worte von Walt Whitman erklingt zum ersten Mal in New York. 1947–49: Hindemith ist nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs erstmals wieder in Europa. Vortragsrei- sen durch Deutschland im Auftrag der amerikanischen Militärregierung. 1949/50: Er hält Vorlesungen am Poetik-Lehrstuhl der Harvard University. 1951: In Zürich wird er Professor für Musikwissenschaft (bis 1957). 1952: Die Harvard-Vorlesungen erscheinen unter dem Titel »A Composer’s World«. Er erhält den Orden »Pour le mérite«. 1953: Umzug nach Blonay in der Schweiz. Bis 1963 unternimmt er zahlreiche Konzertreisen als Dirigent (u. a. nach Südamerika und Japan). 1957–59: Uraufführung der Oper »Die Harmonie der Welt« in Basel. 1963: Sein letztes Werk, die Messe für Chor a cappella, wird in Wien uraufgeführt. Paul Hindemith stirbt am 28. Dezember in Frankfurt am Main. .

    TURANDOT Cast Biographies Soprano Martina Serafin (Turandot) made her San Francisco Opera debut as the Marshallin in Der Rosenkavalier in 2007. Born in Vienna, she studied at the Vienna Conservatory and between 1995 and 2000 she was a member of the ensemble at Graz Opera. Guest appearances soon led her to the world´s premier opera stages, including at the Vienna State Opera where she has been a regular performer since 2005. Serafin´s repertoire includes the role of Lisa in Pique Dame, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, the title role of Manon Lescaut, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Upcoming engagements include Elsa von Brabant in Lohengrin at the Opéra National de Paris and Abigaille in Nabucco at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. "Nun laube, Lindlein, laube!“ lll. “Seid ihr nicht der schwanendreher” Program Notes: Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Brahms' Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38 is the first of two sonatas for piano and cello. It was begun in 1862 during Brahms' stay in the mountain village of Bad Munster am Stein-Ebernburg, where he wrote the first two movements and an Adagio movement, which was later dropped. After the existing finale was added in 1865, Brahms dedicated the completed sonata to his friend Josef Gansbacher, an amateur cellist and professor at the Singing Akademie in Vienna. The deep sonorities and the haunting melodies of the Allegro non troppo create a mood throughout the movement that is melancholic and sometimes wistful. The opening theme is a beautiful melody which rises from the depths of the cello's low E, soars for a few moments, then wanders its way back down the G and C strings to give way to the piano entrance. Brahms uses chromaticism to charm in the Allegretto quasi Minuetto. Chromatic melodies in F-sharp minor and A major sweep through the cello line, creating appropriately edgy dissonances on the strong beats of the measure. Sighing figures played three times in succession make up the only asymmetrical phrases in the entire piece.

Duncan Recital Hall Z975 -2005 Ce l e b ratin g ~1/J Years THE SHEPHERD SCHOOL ~ SIC RICE UNIVERSITY The Hindemith Viola Project brings together fifteen viola students from the combined studios of Karen Ritscher and James Dunham to perform this unique series of concerts featuring music for the viola by the eminent German composer and violist Paul Hindemith. These stud­ ents have devoted much of the school year to learning and rehearsing this music in preparation for these concerts, and they participated in a series of all-Hindemith studio classes. Hindemith was a prolific com­ poser in all genres, and his numerous works for the viola occupy a sig­ nificant portion of the repertoire for the instrument. Hindemith's four Solo Sonatas and three Sonatas for Viola and Piano are presented on Tuesday and Thursday in a complete cycle that will demonstrate the virtuosic and sonorous qualities of the viola. These sonatas, composed between 1919 and 1939, are written in a variety of styles that reflect Hindemith's different influences and compositional phases. In addition, two chamber concertos are performed on Wednesday with orchestra: Kammermusik No. 5 and Trauermusik. All of these works were writ­ ten for Hindemith's own performance, and due to his intimate know­ ledge of the viola, they challenge the technique and skill of the violist in new and innovative ways. It is our hope that throughout the week, this project will not only showcase the talents and achievements of the violists at the Shepherd School, but also promote Paul Hindemith, who many consider to be the greatest and most creative violist-composer of all time.
