For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Introduction Bollywood in Australia Andrew Hassam and Makand Paranjape The global context of Bollywood in Australia Makarand Paranjape The transcultural character and reach of Bollywood cinema has been gradually more visible and obvious over the last two decades. What is less understood and explored is its escalating integration with audiences, markets and entertainment industries beyond the Indian subcontinent. This book explores the relationship of Bollywood to Australia. We believe that this increasingly important relationship is an outcome of the convergence between two remarkably dynamic entities—globalising Bollywood, on the one hand and Asianising Australia, on the other. If there is a third element in this relationship, which is equally important, it is the mediating power of the vibrant diasporic community of South Asians in Australia. Hence, at its most basic, this book explores the conjunctures and ruptures between these three forces: Bollywood, Australia and their interface, the diaspora. 1 Bollywood in Australia It would be useful to see, at the outset, how Bollywood here refers not only to the Bombay film industry, but is symbolic of the Indian and even the South Asian film industry.

Use and Abuse of Female Body in Popular Hindi Films: A Semiotic analysis of Item Songs *Dr. G. K. Sahu Assistant Professor Dept. of Mass Communication Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh- 202002 & **Sana Abbas Research Scholar Dept. of Mass Communication Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh-202002 India Abstract The item songs have become an important element of Bollywood movies. Women are featured as a commodity, only to satisfy male urge and their bodies are featured in a way as if they are meant for male consumption. In an environment where a plethora of movies are releasing every year, putting a peppy item song in a movie, is a good trick to gain the attention of viewers . Brazen lyrics are used to enhance the popularity of these songs. Many established film makers in the industry are using this trick to gain huge financial returns. They are attracting and engaging audiences by using as well as abusing female body in their films. The paper makes an attempt to analyze the item songs by employing semiotic method to examine the use and abuse of female body in Hindi films. Key Words: Hindi Films, Item Songs, Female Body, Use & Abuse, Portrayal, Commoditization. www.ijellh.com 14 Introduction Cinema and dance have had a long history of engagement. Cinema enlisted dance from its very beginnings – the spectacular display of movement. The shared investment in movement ensured a spontaneous intermediality (transgression of boundaries) between early cinema and dance. Songs with dance have always played a crucial role in Hindi movies. The role of song and its demand changed with the entry of „item songs‟.

Bharadwaj and his co- scriptwriter Abbas Tyrewalla’s ingenious adaptation of the original play makes it one of the unparalleled adaptations of the play comparable to Kurosawa’s classic Throne of Blood. His adaptation of Shakespeare follows a long tradition of India’s engagement with Shakespeare’s plays both on the stage and on screen. While Othello has remained a favourite of playwrights, Macbeth in comparison has received little attention from the thespians. Bharadwaj’s attempt is the first serious one to engage with the play in Bollywood.

THE NEW YORK TIMES July 18, 2003 HEAT Bose Pacia Modern 508 West 26th Street, Chelsea Through July 19 Popular cinema in India — and, more recently, Indian television — is famous for its extravagant visual effects and sex-and-violence plots. These elements have also had an influence on contemporary art, as this entertainingly sharp-edged photographic show, organized by the artist Ram Rahman, reveals. Some of the contributors, like D. Ravinder Reddy, have actually worked in the movie industry: he is represented here by stills from a 1997 bodice-ripper titled "Daud," starring Sanjay Dutt and Urmila Matondkar. Philip Lorca DiCorcia's "Bollywood" reflects a stint in Bombay film studios in the 1980's. The artist Subodh Gupta recently took a bit part in a B-grade gangster film; he appears in a painting of a scene from it, and again in a hilariously phallocentric television video he made in Egypt in the early days of the war on Iraq. A beautiful series of photographs by Samar Singh Jodha documents the now- pervasive presence of television in Indian life, while Abul Kalam Azad and Mr. Ram focus on the vivid film posters that have long filled South Asian cities, roadsides and villages. Sheba Chhachhi and Sukyana Rahman, working in video and photo- collage respectively, consider the sexual politics these advertisements sell, while Pushpmala N. takes such images into her own hands in a series of fabulous pictures, shot by the film studio portraitist J. H. Thakker, in which she enacts a variety of female film stereotypes, from temptress to ingénue to earth mother.

© 2018 JETIR June 2018, Volume 5, Issue 6 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) STUDY ON DENIM AS A FASHION INSPIRATION IN BOLLYWOOD 1Rubina Mittal, 2Bharat Jain, 3Dr. Dolly Mogra 1Research Scholar ,Pacific university, Udaipur 2Research Scholar ,Pacific university, Udaipur 3Asst.Prof.,(incharge), Department of Readymade Garments, University College Of Social Sciences And Humanities, Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur,Rajasthan ABSTRACT-Fashion is ever evolving and that is the most beautiful aspect of it. Fashion fills the colour otherwise life is black and white. Bollywood has a similar effect and it goes hand-in hand with fashion. In India, Bollywood is the trendsetter in fashion even more than the runways or bridal shows. From 1970’s to the present decade, fashion has evolved tremendously in the Indian film industry. Bollywood and fashion always had a vital relation, They have always influenced each other. In India, fashion often takes its cues from cinema. Indian Bollywood fashion in the 1970s underwent many changes in dressing, both for men and women, colors, styles, hairdos – everything evolved. Several popular Hindi films from the 1970’s used denim as more or less prominent appearance were typically signifiers of characters exploring new forms of identity. It is perhaps not entirely coincidental that denim came into Bollywood film just as the major tropes and themes of mainstream film shifted towards a focus on subaltern subjects and the pursuit of justice, and away from romance. The consumerism in the 1980s and 1990s opened Indians to the idea of wearing readymade denims, as it survived 2k & till present day denimization took over people’s wardrobe irrespective of gender & age.
