    The Mysticism and Glory of Sufism and Kashmiriyat: Origins, History and the Politics behind it Introduction “Insaniyat, Jamhuriyat, Kashmiriyat”, or “Humanism, Democracy and Kashmiriness”, with these words the former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee described his doctrine towards preserving and fostering the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Jammu & Kashmir (FirstPost, 2018). Twenty years later, this paper will aim to untangle the origins and meanings behind this statement, taking the reader few centuries back, when the mystical current of Islam, called Sufism, was setting foot on the Indian subcontinent, preaching the teachings of love, compassion, humanity and promoting an ideology where caste hierarchy or an individual’s financial standing did not matter. It will explore in-depth the construct and design of this spiritual Islamic philosophy and theology, which has exercised significant influence over the development of Islamic politics and society, and the diverse expression of religious devotion via shrines (Elias, 1998). On that basis, it will discuss the evolution of the so-perceived sacred collective identity in the Kashmir Valley of Jammu & Kashmir, called ‘Kashmiriyat’, which manifested a tradition of syncretism, which flourished in the region owing to the mutual efforts of both Muslims and Hindus towards coexistence, communal harmony, hospitality, non-violence and mutual accommodation. It will follow the evolution of this notion and its subsequent demise through observing the unholy alliance of organized fundamental interpretations of religion and gun culture, which have led to the weeding out of the remnants of this humanistic culture of Kashmir with its roots deeply embedded in the hitherto secular and glorious ancient past.

    CHAPTER - I11 HISTORICAL BACKDROP Emergence of Hazratbal The white-marbled ~azratbal'shrine-cum-grand mosque is the most important Muslim centre of pilgrimage in the Kashmir valley, situated on the western banks of the picturesque Dal ~ake'in Srinagar, a city of great antiquity. The shrine is located some 8 kilometers away from Lal Chowk, the heart of the city, at an altitude of 5250 feet3. Close by lie the Naseem ~agh~and the Bagh-i-Afzal bad^. To north-west is the University of Kashmir Campus and to the south-east, the Regional Engineering College. The grave of the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah (d. 1983), under whose patronage the shrine was reconstructed, also lies in the vicinity. The noble and perfect proportions of this shrine are reflected in the pure simplicity of its single domed facade with its accompanying minaret. Being the repository of the sacred hair6 of Prophet Mohammad (p.b.u.h.), the shrine has been a spiritual religious centre not only for Kashmiri Muslims but also a revered holy place for their co-religionists elsewhere in the world. The shrine was established when the sacred hair was brought and enshrined there towards the end of 17th century7 C.E., [I111 A.H.], on the last Friday of the month of Shawal, and enshrined in a baradari at Bagh-i-Sadiq ~han', as Hazratbal was known in those days. With the establishment of the baradari set in the orchard of the Mughal lord Sadiq Khan, the place came to be known as Sadiq Abad. After housing the sacred hair there, the Bagh- i-Sadiq Khan over a period of time, came to be known as Hazratbal in loving memory of Prophet Mohammad (p.b.u.h.), out of the people's extreme reverence and devotion to the sacred relic.

In the modern geopolitical era, this same diversity, evident from the blend of Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism in this single state, has made it a center of warfare rather than cultural advancement. In the late 1980s, an insurgency in the valley threatened not only to rip Kashmir apart, but also pull the rest of the world into a dangerous war. In this paper, we will examine the major reasons for the insurgency, and why it only gained momentum some 40 years after India’s partition. Finally, we will explore some of the modern-day proposed solutions to the ongoing conflict over Kashmir. In order to gain a better understanding of why the insurgency of 1987-89 took place, we will examine the origins and development of the Kashmir independence movement.
