THE BEST BRITISH DRAMA and COMEDY in ONE PLACE for the FIRST TIME BBC First Launch Titles and Talent Revealed THE BEST BRITISH DRAMA AND COMEDY IN ONE PLACE FOR THE FIRST TIME BBC First launch titles and talent revealed From August, BBC First on Foxtel will be the new home of premium British drama and comedy in Australia, showcasing the best award-winning, world-renowned programmes and talent in one place for the very first time. BBC First offers programmes with a uniquely British perspective - stories that challenge, immerse and entertain, as well as celebrate humanity in all its fascinating complexity. From features to sweeping series and every configuration in between, BBC First will give its audience more exceptional British shows than ever before, many that would not otherwise make it to Australia, and their viewing experience will always be ad-break free. There will also be the opportunity to marathon-view great new shows, with programme stacking a special feature in the BBC First schedule. Launch titles include recent British hits The Musketeers and Peaky Blinders along with The Politician’s Husband, single drama Burton and Taylor and the new Alan Partridge mockumentaries. Talent from Helena Bonham Carter, Daniel Radcliffe and David Tennant to Ricky Gervais, Steve Coogan and Dawn French are all lined up to appear on the channel. While off screen talent, including Andrew Davies, Jimmy McGovern and Paula Milne, who are renowned for creating truly groundbreaking series, are also behind some of the forthcoming titles. Big returning series, including Call The Midwife and New Tricks, are already secured for the channel from 2015 as they enter production for series four and series twelve respectively. As new dramas and comedies hit TV screens in the UK, they will be available in Australia on BBC First faster than ever before. BBC First offers Australian viewers the chance to see British drama singles and short series that would not otherwise make it to our networks, such as Playhouse Presents – a star-studded collection of contemporary one-offs featuring leading talent both on and off the screen. In addition, none of the programmes on BBC First will be available on terrestrial television for at least 12 months. Australia is the first territory to launch BBC First, one of three new global brands announced by BBC Worldwide in October 2013. It will also benefit from the extra investment BBC Worldwide has pledged for content, an additional £30million across the company for a range of genres, taking BBC Worldwide’s total content investment commitment to £200million pa from 2014/15. It was recently announced that Banished, written by Jimmy McGovern, will be the first local production for BBC First. Co-commissioned with BBC Two in the UK and produced by RSJ Films/See-Saw Films, this epic seven part series is loosely inspired by events in 1788 when Britain established a penal colony in Australia. Jon Penn, Managing Director of BBC Worldwide ANZ said: ‘The BBC has always been pioneering and the launch of BBC First in Australia continues in this spirit, offering something totally unique to the market. British drama and comedy has a world-renowned reputation for being clever, complex and immensely enjoyable, attracting top talent on and off the screen. For the first time in Australia, all the very best new British dramas and comedies will be available in one place, giving viewers the opportunity to indulge and immerse themselves in world class creativity.’ Richard Freudenstein, Foxtel Chief Executive said: ‘The partnership between Foxtel and the BBC marks a significant milestone in Australian television. BBC First will enable our customers to see every major new BBC series first on Foxtel. This further consolidates our brilliant offering for subscribers and our pledge to bring the best television from around the world to Foxtel homes.’ BBC First joins existing BBC channels – UKTV, BBC Knowledge, CBeebies and BBC World News – on the Foxtel platform from August. It will also be available on Foxtel GO and in high definition. Drama and comedy fans will be able to check what’s coming up on BBC First via the programme page bbc.com/First. • Rooted and Grounded in Love (Eph 3:17)
Rooted and Grounded in Love (Eph 3:17) Brynmawr Family Church Sermon Stuart Wheatman, Sunday 17th Jan 2010 Intro- • What shoes worn to church today? What are the grips like? I have seen a pattern in the 3 years we have been building Church here. The pattern is that we make progress and start to break through. Shortly later relationships are tested and people fall out with each other, get offended, and ground is lost that had been gained. It is like Rugby- the aim is to take ground and hold on to it, to also get the ball and hold on to it, but if we lose our focus or grip on the ball or lose our footing the opponent is not slow to step in. Recent snow- so many cars struggling to move, but no grip on the ground. Paul prayed that every Christian became 'rooted and grounded in love'- Eph 3:17. Love is the studs on our boots- it stops us from slipping over (by being offended). We may gain great ground in God, but if we are easily offended and hold on to grudges the ground can be lost in a second- we become divided and ineffectual. This is the week of prayer for Christian unity let's think about our own relationships with others and see if they are any areas we need to address. Read Eph 2:1-6, 11-18 Through the cross God broke the dividing walls • The curtain. We were God's enemies (2:2 'sons of disobedience') but reconciled to God through the cross (Rom 5:10-'..when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son').

  • The Future of The
The Future of Public Service Broadcasting Some thoughts Stephen Fry Before I can even think to presume to dare to begin to expatiate on what sort of an organism I think the British Broadcasting Corporation should be, where I think the BBC should be going, how I think it and other British networks should be funded, what sort of programmes it should make, develop and screen and what range of pastries should be made available in its cafés and how much to the last penny it should pay its talent, before any of that, I ought I think in justice to run around the games field a couple of times puffing out a kind of “The BBC and Me” mini‐biography, for like many of my age, weight and shoe size, the BBC is deeply stitched into my being and it is important for me as well as for you, to understand just how much. Only then can we judge the sense, value or otherwise of my thoughts. It all began with sitting under my mother’s chair aged two as she (teaching history at the time) marked essays. It was then that the Archers theme tune first penetrated my brain, never to leave. The voices of Franklin Engelman going Down Your Way, the women of the Petticoat Line, the panellists of Twenty Questions, Many A Slip, My Word and My Music, all these solid middle class Radio 4 (or rather Home Service at first) personalities populated my world. As I visited other people’s houses and, aged seven by now, took my own solid state transistor radio off to boarding school with me, I was made aware of The Light Programme, now Radio 2, and Sparky’s Magic Piano, Puff the Magic Dragon and Nelly the Elephant, I also began a lifelong devotion to radio comedy as Round The Horne, The Clitheroe Kid, I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again, Just A Minute, The Men from The Ministry and Week Ending all made themselves known to me.

The exhibition opened on November 8, 2016, with special preview performances from November 2 - 6, 2016 during the NYCF. Paranoia Man in a Rat Fink Room continues after the festival with events and discussions brought together by Storefront through February 18, 2017. The exhibition follows a tradition of spatial experimentation at Storefront where the boundaries between architecture, art, and the subject are dissolved into one continuous environment. The installation is a historical pastiche of urban and architectural experiences linked through a mise-en-scène comprised of three architectural environments - a Canal Street style kiosk filled with the leftover DVDs and VHSs from Jungle Video (a now defunct media superstore in Los Angeles); a comedy club partially inspired by the original Rat Fink Room (the world's first dedicated stand-up comedy club, which opened in 1963); and a bathroom that has been converted into surveillance headquarters that will keep audio/video recordings of the last days of Storefront. ABOUT PARANOIA MAN IN A RAT FINK ROOM Storefront for Art and Architecture is closing its doors for good*.

  • Ricky Gervais's Sentimental Men
111 NELE SAWALLISCH Ricky Gervais's Sentimental Men 1. Introduction Ricky Gervais's stage persona performs the part of enfant terrible in the current transatlantic Anglophone comedy scene. While his breakthrough as a stand-up comedian came comparatively late in his life or, as Itzkoff writes, "after his sitcoms were successful" (2012), Gervais has produced a substantial multimedia body of work which spans the radio, books, television, the stand-up stage, the big screen, streaming services, and – no less – social media. Gervais operates in front of as well as behind cameras; he is known as a workaholic who likes to be in full artistic control of his projects. He writes, directs, produces, casts, acts, performs and tweets, and has built a formidable media presence over the years. In his work, Gervais blurs the lines between such dyads as 'author'/'protagonist,' 'author'/'narrator,' or 'autobiography/fiction.' Such doubling also complicates our understanding of different masculinities that Gervais and his characters have toyed with throughout his career.1 The different 'funny' versions of men highlighted in his various projects include, for example, The Office's (2001-2003) king of cringe David Brent; background and second-rate actor Andy Millman from Extras (2005-2007); Derek Noakes, whose good-naturedness and naïveté endear him to his colleagues; and, most recently, widower Tony Johnson, whose cynical and morose outlook on after/life turn him into a misanthrope. This article focuses on the latter two shows, Derek (2012-2014) and After Life (2019-), Gervais's first original Netflix production, because they can be read together in terms of the subjects they address.
