good turn-out of 79 players enjoyed the warm weather. It was unfortunate that heavy rain washed out the Sunday afternoon Mixed, however there was excellent tennis in the other three sessions. A Most convivial party was held at one of the local hotels on the ASaturday night with President Craig promising a bigger and better social event in 2017. Many thanks to Steve Harris and Jim Coutlis for coralling all of the players for a group photo on the Saturday before play commenced for the afternoon session – there must be some military cordial in the water out western Sydney way!

Please Support Our Sponsors 2 May 2016 Australian National Teams’ Carnival - Adelaide, Jan 9 - 13, 2017

The Adelaide Teams’ Carnival is only 7 months away, so make sure you have accommodation booked, and perhaps drag a few friends out of retirement to play with you! The Headquarters will be at South Parklands, Greenhill Road Unley, where they have 18 synthetic grass courts, and they’ll be using other centres such as Woodville Lawn, Kensington Gardens, Reade Park and Tranmere – all of which have real grass, numbering 47 in all! Anybody requiring help with accommodation is welcome to phone me, as I have a list, and can direct you to the source. Places such as Quest, Rydges. Chelsea, RNR Apartments, Adelaide City Fringe Serviced Apartments and Stamford Grand Glenelg are all in the list. Players are reminded that the rules allow for SIX players only PER match – so if you have a large number, it may not work well for you. We have booked a venue for our State Dinner at the restaurant in “Living Choice....” Catering will be provided by “Damien on Fisher” - a very reputable company! Google them for menus etc.....Click the Adelaide link on the TSA website to go straight to the TSSA website dedicated to the event. “Be Seen in Seventeen” is the “catch-cry”!! Let’s make it great. Central Coast Seniors Tennis Tournament Wyong and Charmhaven.

entral Coast Seniors Tennis held their first Wyong Tournament in March this year. There was a great response with over 125 entries and everyone welcoming the move to a bigger synthetic grass court complex. The courts were brand new but intensive work in the lead up to the tournament by Mark C and Brett made them playable...... with a few ' interesting ' bounces. The Friday singles had some close matches with Craig Edwards taking out the 35+ singles and Phillip Hazel, Mike Etherington and Al Thwaite winning the other younger groups. The 60+ men's in particular was a doozy with John Lovett, Don Mortimer and Bob Hall finishing equal on sets and only separated by one game. John Lovett was victorious on count back. Friday arvo saw the American Doubles ( modified format ). The new venue caused some confusion for ' Central Coastie ' Lisa Handley, who got lost 5 ( or was it 7 ) times on the way to the complex. Sorry Lisa, had to mention it. Wyong local Tina Lewry, won her group, with Mary and Bob also taking home a prize. A 3-way tie in the last group with Mark Starkey, Anthony Girdler and Scott Homsey resulted in some intense haggling over the chocolates and wine on offer for prizes. In the end everyone in the group got a prize...... except Hadrian who was very much ' the weakest link '. The Wyong Royal Hotel put on a Friday night “all you can eat” pizza feast which we will definitely do again next year. Their hospitality and quality of food resulted in most of us going there on Saturday night as well. Saturday and Sunday were busy which allowed us to utilise the picturesque Charmhaven complex. Local coach Brett, provided nibbles and drinks which was much appreciated. As well as the usual events there were also 4 Special Events run over the weekend with double prizemoney provided by our sponsors Killarney Vale Vet Clinic, Chavez Chiropractic, Wyong Royal Hotel and D'VINE Catering. Craig Edwards and Glenn Armstrong won the 35+ Men’s ( we may ban them from the group next year due to excessive age ). Fiona Roseby and Kelly Thomas won one of the 35+ ladies groups with Sharon Mitchell and Jo Clarke winning the other. Peter Kilborn and a very excited Dallas Wade won the 130+ men's combined with Maureen Bartels and Karen Hanratty winning the 110+ Ladies Combined. Many thanks to our sponsors for allowing us to run these Special Events. The weather gods were kind to us all weekend and it was wonderful to see a great turnout considering the fairly late change of venue. We're extremely grateful to Leoni and the helpers at Wyong for setting up their site and thanks as well to Brett at Charmhaven for providing his complex. We hope to use it more next year. Further improvements are planned ( and funded ) for both complexes and the successful arrangement between the clubs and with Central Coast Seniors Tennis has encouraged us to run other ' teams ' events during the year. We would love to see you all again, Thanks again, Hadrian, Sharon and Kat ( Central Coast Seniors Tennis ) 3 Team Shirts in a NEW fabric

This year the NSW State teams are looking at offering players the chance to purchase a new lighter microfibre shirt as the NSW team shirt. Another side to the Young Seniors Championships.....

alking through the corridor that separates the Stadium and Grandstand courts in Umag, anyone competing in the ITF Young Seniors World Individual Championships could not help but feel inspired by the pictures of the tennis legends who have passed through that same W corridor at one time or another during the past 25 years. The roll of honour would do justice to a Grand Slam - Muster, Moya, Rios, Ferrero, Wawrinka and, of course, the Croatian Cilic to name but a few who have won the Croatian Open. Looking at some of the Christian names in the order of play on the opening day of the championships on Saturday was like turning back the clock – there was a Gustavo (actually Kuerten never won the despite five attempts), a Bjorn, a Rafael and a Mats. Why, there was even a Michael Chang playing this year – no relation of course to the former champion who is preoccupied with coaching Kei Nishikori at the moment – and someone called Serena, Luca Serena, the men’s over 35 No. 1 seed from Italy. Above all the championships will be remembered for the two Australians, Andrew Kotnik and Caterina Cerantonio, who chose to play at Umag during their honeymoon. Now that’s what you call a love match. With acknowledgement to Clive White (writer for the ITF) - edited by R Castle. May 2016 6 ITF WORLD Young Seniors Umag, Croatia May 1-14

Individuals have been completed in Croatia after rain forced them indoors. Some events contained a myriad of talent – players who have been “on the Circuit”, Davis Cuppers and the like – no wonder our players had so much trouble progressing in the draws! Our two NSW reps were Iggy Jovanovic and Sascha Morris (pictured). In Iggy’s 45+ group, there was one guy, Sander Groen who came close to beating Bernard Tomic 3 months ago at Dalray Beach, and who won a Challenger event with on Iggy and Sascha (centre and R) Fed’s 18th Birthday! Snippet: The love match to end all love matches took place at these Championships. The wedding of two Australians, Andrew Kotnik and Caterina Cerantonio, took place in a hurry, in April just three months after Andrew had proposed to her. In fact, it was tennis that brought them together in the first place. "We met playing university games back in Melbourne 20 odd years ago," said Kotnik. We were friends for 15 years and then we sort of found each other again three years ago. Plus, Caterina played a small part in the win by Jurate Hardy in her Final. She had coached her 15 years ago in Australia.

From the Secretary’s Desk

Hello all my favourite people, Gordon Waygood, winner of a special award by Tennis NSW, was featured on radio 2UE recently, which was heard by a number of Tennis Seniors. He was asked about his reasons for being fit....and he used his time to promote Tennis Seniors. Well done Gordon, I’m sorry I missed it! Just letting you all know about some changed dates for 2016 – MERIMBULA will not run for a week as it has done for 34 years, they are trialling a Friday – Monday format. The dates are: Oct 14 – 17. 2016 Narooma Seniors Tournament Report

he 2016 Narooma Seniors Tennis Tournament, held 12th and 13th March 2016, saw 80 players compete, coming come from as far away as Sydney, Cooma, Merimbula and the A.C.T. Narooma turned on fine warm weather for tennis for both days with spectators enjoying an impressive display of tennis across all sessions, despite the very muggy conditions endured by the players (the humidity must Thave made players feel like they were playing in the tropics!). Players were treated to a complimentary BBQ at the conclusion of play on Sunday, which proved a great way to wind-down after an enjoyable weekend of tennis. Organisers would like to thank all the players for supporting the tournament, our generous sponsors, and, all the volunteers at Narooma and Dalmeny tennis clubs who worked so hard to make this annual event a success.
