The Headquarters will be at South Parklands, Greenhill Road Unley, where they have 18 synthetic grass courts, and they’ll be using other centres such as Woodville Lawn, Kensington Gardens, Reade Park and Tranmere – all of which have real grass, numbering 47 in all! Anybody requiring help with accommodation is welcome to phone me, as I have a list, and can direct you to the source. Places such as Quest, Rydges. Chelsea, RNR Apartments, Adelaide City Fringe Serviced Apartments and Stamford Grand Glenelg are all in the list. Players are reminded that the rules allow for SIX players only PER match – so if you have a large number, it may not work well for you. We have booked a venue for our State Dinner at the restaurant in “Living Choice....” Catering will be provided by “Damien on Fisher” - a very reputable company! Google them for menus etc.....Click the Adelaide link on the TSA website to go straight to the TSSA website dedicated to the event. “Be Seen in Seventeen” is the “catch-cry”!! Let’s make it great. Central Coast Seniors Tennis Tournament Wyong and Charmhaven. entral Coast Seniors Tennis held their first Wyong Tournament in March this year. There was a great response with over 125 entries and everyone welcoming the move to a bigger synthetic grass court complex. The courts were brand new but intensive work in the lead up to the tournament by Mark C and Brett made them playable...... with a few ' interesting ' bounces. The Friday singles had some close matches with Craig Edwards taking out the 35+ singles and Phillip Hazel, Mike Etherington and Al Thwaite winning the other younger groups. The 60+ men's in particular was a doozy with John Lovett, Don Mortimer and Bob Hall finishing equal on sets and only separated by one game. John Lovett was victorious on count back. Friday arvo saw the American Doubles ( modified format ). The new venue caused some confusion for ' Central Coastie ' Lisa Handley, who got lost 5 ( or was it 7 ) times on the way to the complex. Sorry Lisa, had to mention it. Wyong local Tina Lewry, won her group, with Mary and Bob also taking home a prize. A 3-way tie in the last group with Mark Starkey, Anthony Girdler and Scott Homsey resulted in some intense haggling over the chocolates and wine on offer for prizes. In the end everyone in the group got a prize....... except Hadrian who was very much ' the weakest link '. The Wyong Royal Hotel put on a Friday night “all you can eat” pizza feast which we will definitely do again next year. Their hospitality and quality of food resulted in most of us going there on Saturday night as well. Saturday and Sunday were busy which allowed us to utilise the picturesque Charmhaven complex. Local coach Brett, provided nibbles and drinks which was much appreciated. As well as the usual events there were also 4 Special Events run over the weekend with double prizemoney provided by our sponsors Killarney Vale Vet Clinic, Chavez Chiropractic, Wyong Royal Hotel and D'VINE Catering. Craig Edwards and Glenn Armstrong won the 35+ Men’s ( we may ban them from the group next year due to excessive age ). Fiona Roseby and Kelly Thomas won one of the 35+ ladies groups with Sharon Mitchell and Jo Clarke winning the other. Peter Kilborn and a very excited Dallas Wade won the 130+ men's combined with Maureen Bartels and Karen Hanratty winning the 110+ Ladies Combined. Many thanks to our sponsors for allowing us to run these Special Events. The weather gods were kind to us all weekend and it was wonderful to see a great turnout considering the fairly late change of venue. We're extremely grateful to Leoni and the helpers at Wyong for setting up their site and thanks as well to Brett at Charmhaven for providing his complex.

Yes, he’s a great writer, get used to it.” —Adam Begley, New York Observer “Wal ace puts enough energy, attitude, thought, ‘fun’ (in and out of quotes) and sheer information into any single page to wear me out. But they don’t…. As long as he’s wil ing to get down and rassle with this stuff, I’m glad to sit here and read al about it.” —David Gates, Newsweek “You don’t want to miss out on reading David Foster Wal ace. Yes, he’s that good.” —Kane Webb, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette “He has Gore Vidal’s biting wit, Christopher Hitchens’s ability to disrobe intel ectual impostors, and Pynchon’s sense of the bizarre…. Not just refreshing, it’s downright exhilarating.” —David Daley, Hartford Courant “Wal ace’s sheer verbal precocity and versatility stun.” —Joan Hinkemeyer, Rocky Mountain News “DFW is smart and funny, a man from whose word processor flows a torrent of bril iant observations and hysterical wit. Do your disposition and your mind a favor: Read this book.” —Steven E. Alford, Houston Chronicle “A marvelous book…. Sparkling reportage…. If one wants to see the zeitgeist auto-grappling, in al its necessary confusions, one must read every essay in this book.” —James Wood, Newsday “Funny as al get-out….

  • The String Theory (Dfw)
THE STRING THEORY (DFW) Originally published in the July 1996 issue. Scroll to the bottom to read David Foster Wallace's footnotes. When Michael T. Joyce of Los Angeles serves, when he tosses the ball and his face rises to track it, it looks like he's smiling, but he's not really smiling–his face's circumoral muscles are straining with the rest of his body to reach the ball at the top of the toss's rise. He wants to hit it fully extended and slightly out in front of him–he wants to be able to hit emphatically down on the ball, to generate enough pace to avoid an ambitious return from his opponent. Right now, it's 1:00, Saturday, July 22, 1995, on the Stadium Court of the Stade Jarry tennis complex in Montreal. It's the first of the qualifying rounds for the Canadian Open, one of the major stops on the ATP's "hard- court circuit,"[1] which starts right after Wimbledon and climaxes at N.Y.C.'s U.S. Open. The tossed ball rises and seems for a second to hang, waiting, cooperating, as balls always seem to do for great players. The opponent, a Canadian college star named Dan Brakus, is a very good tennis player. Michael Joyce, on the other hand, is a world-class tennis player. In 1991, he was the top- ranked junior in the United States and a finalist at Junior Wimbledon [2] is now in his fourth year on the ATP Tour, and is as of this day the seventy-ninth-best tennis player on planet earth.
