Course name: ENGL 279 Course title: Science Fiction and Dystopic Literature Units: 3 Course Description: This course is designed to increase students’ knowledge of the literary genre known as Science Fiction. Emphasis will be on the study of literature--novels and short fiction--that depicts our future world, visionary scientific endeavor, and conflicts between humans, aliens, and sentient technology. Students will study the history, exciting contemporary trends, and the relevant contemporary issues in Science Fiction, including dystopia vs. utopia, artificial intelligence, current theory concerning technology, cloning and physical science, human psychology in a futuristic environment, and the rise of Cyberpunk and new Alternate Reality literature within the genre. Prerequisites: Completion of ENGL 101 Course Objectives: l. Analyze the role of literature as a means of reflecting and shaping thought and behavior. 2. Recognize and employ literary terminology and the language of literary criticism. 3. Identify, interpret, and compare and contrast specific leitmotifs and character types of the Science Fiction genre. 4. Practice critical reading and writing skills. 5. Conduct research and synthesize material from outside the given text in developing a written or oral project. 6. Recognize the attributes that make literary works universal and timeless, as well as unique to certain genres. 7. Demonstrate the ability to discuss literature using relevant support from the text. 8. Evaluate a literary work objectively, being able to understand and analyze critical responses to the works read. Course Content: I. In discussing the roots of many essential elements of Science Fiction, the instructor will guide students in: A. Distinguishing the important archetypes of Science Fiction. -

It was barely dawn, and the two other members of her Council -- Tamalane and Bellonda -- showed impatience at the summons, even though Odrade had ordered breakfast served by her personal chef. "It isn't every woman who can preside at the birth of her own father," Odrade quipped when the others complained they had too many demands on their time to permit of "time-wasting nonsense." Only aged Tamalane showed sly amusement. Bellonda held her over-fleshed features expressionless, often her equivalent of a scowl. Was it possible, Odrade wondered, that Bell had not exorcised resentment of the relative opulence in Mother Superior's surroundings? Odrade's quarters were a distinct mark of her position but the distinction represented her duties more than any elevation over her Sisters. The small dining room allowed her to consult aides during meals. Bellonda glanced this way and that, obviously impatient to be gone. Much effort had been expended without success in attempts to break through Bellonda's coldly remote shell. "It felt very odd to hold that baby in my arms and think: This is my father," Odrade said. "I heard you the first time!" Bellonda spoke from the belly, almost a baritone rumbling as though each word caused her vague indigestion. She understood Odrade's wry jest, though. -

The defacement of the ‘‘book of the world’’ accomplished during the Enlightenment beckons ‘‘an invigorating vector of intellectual discovery, rather than a calamitous diminishment’’ (xi). This is because ‘‘[t]hinking has interests that do not coincide with those of living; indeed, they can and have been pitted against the latter’’ (xi). Pursuing these interests, Brassier develops a concept of the ‘‘will to know’’ congruent with a ‘‘will to nothingness’’ impervious to the countervailing force of the ‘‘will to live.’’ It is not the least of the ironies of Nihil Unbound that a work committed to marshalling the rigorous stringency of reason against the affective finesse of interpretation often produces claims that connect with the gut as much as the mind. Committed though he is to the notion that words are categorically weak objects for philosophical thought, Brassier nonetheless gets a lot of mileage out of them. -

Phobos, Deimos: Formation and Evolution Alex Soumbatov-Gur The moons are confirmed to be ejected parts of Mars’ crust. After explosive throwing out as cone-like rocks they plastically evolved with density decays and materials transformations. Their expansion evolutions were accompanied by global ruptures and small scale rock ejections with concurrent crater formations. The scenario reconciles orbital and physical parameters of the moons. It coherently explains dozens of their properties including spectra, appearances, size differences, crater locations, fracture symmetries, orbits, evolution trends, geologic activity, Phobos’ grooves, mechanism of their origin, etc. The ejective approach is also discussed in the context of observational data on near-Earth asteroids, main belt asteroids Steins, Vesta, and Mars. The approach incorporates known fission mechanism of formation of miniature asteroids, logically accounts for its outliers, and naturally explains formations of small celestial bodies of various sizes. -

Clarke in which self replicating monoliths engulf Jupiter, increasing its density to the point when nuclear fusion can take place, giving birth to a new star. It was found that 1.629x1020 monoliths would be needed to trigger nuclear fusion in Jupiter's core, taking 136 hours to do so. How Star Wars Became Museological Transmedia Storytelling in the Exhibition Space Beatriz Bartolomé Herrera and Philipp Dominik Keidl Star Wars’s production and reception histories—not to mention the millennia-long history of the storyworld itself—have been documented across books, television specials, DVD extras, interviews, articles, wikis, and fan-run websites. Another important site to encounter the franchise’s history is the museum. In fact, with the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, George Lucas has turned his attention from filmmaking and producing to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which is set to open in Los Angeles and will house his collection of paintings, illustrations, comics, props, films, and digital art.1 This museum project is not the first time that Lucas has appeared in the role of art collector, philanthropist, and museologist. Since the early 1990s, Lucasfilm has licensed and co-curated several themed exhibitions for muse- ums, science centers, and other exposition venues, offering visitors detailed insights into the production process through the display of various objects from Lucas’s cinematic oeuvre. Star Wars-themed exhibitions have been the most popular of Lucasfilm’s exhibitions by far, bringing large numbers of visitors into many different institutions. For instance, throughout its fifteen-month run from October 1997 to January 1999, The Magic of Myth drew more than 900,000 visitors to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum (NASM), becoming one of the most popular shows in the institution’s history.2 However, despite the franchise’s growing museum presence, the study of exhibitions has only played a minor role in Star Wars scholarship. -

Weiss1 1Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai`i, 2680 Woodlawn Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA 2Department of Earth Sciences, University of Hawai`i at M¯anoa, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA ABSTRACT Studies of exoplanet demographics require large samples and precise constraints on exoplanet host stars. Using the homogeneous Kepler stellar properties derived using Gaia Data Release 2 by Berger et al.(2020), we re-compute Kepler planet radii and incident fluxes and investigate their distributions with stellar mass and age. We measure the stellar mass dependence of the planet radius valley to +0:21 be d log Rp/d log M? = 0:26−0:16, consistent with the slope predicted by a planet mass dependence on stellar mass (0.24{0.35) and core-powered mass-loss (0.33). We also find first evidence of a stellar age dependence of the planet populations straddling the radius valley. Specifically, we determine that the fraction of super-Earths (1{1.8 R⊕) to sub-Neptunes (1.8{3.5 R⊕) increases from 0.61 ± 0.09 at young ages (< 1 Gyr) to 1.00 ± 0.10 at old ages (> 1 Gyr), consistent with the prediction by core-powered mass- loss that the mechanism shaping the radius valley operates over Gyr timescales. Additionally, we find a tentative decrease in the radii of relatively cool (Fp < 150 F⊕) sub-Neptunes over Gyr timescales, which suggests that these planets may possess H/He envelopes instead of higher mean molecular weight atmospheres. -
