The band – consisting of founding members Reid Anderson on bass, Dave King on drums, and newest member and Philly native Orrin Evans on piano – is known as a group of passionate collaborators who constantly cross boundaries and bridge genres with their music. This winter, the band embarks on a tour for their latest album Never Stop II, comprised entirely of original music from the group’s latest lineup. The Bad Plus will stop in Evans’ hometown of Philadelphia on Saturday, February 9, 2019, performing in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts’ Perelman Theater at 8:00 p.m. “The Bad Plus is starting a new chapter with the recent addition of Philadelphia’s own Orrin Evans, former leader of our Kimmel Center education Jazz Standards program,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “As a supporter of the development of new jazz in the city, we can’t wait for audiences to experience the latest album from such a collaborative group.” The Bad Plus began as a jazz band at the end of the 20th century and has avoided easy categorization ever since, winning both critical and public praise for their creativity and flair. Two years after their formation, The Bad Plus signed to Columbia Records where they released their major label debut album These are the Vistas in 2003. Over the next 15 years, they put out 10 more studio albums. In 2017, the band’s founding piano player parted ways with the group, opening an opportunity for longtime friend of the band, Orrin Evans, to join. Shortly after Evans joined the band, Never Stop II was released. Never Stop II features four original compositions by Anderson, two by Evans, and two by King. Two additional bonus tracks written by Anderson are included on the digital download and CD editions of the album. Never Stop II was tracked live in the studio with no overdubs, guided by longtime engineer Pete Rende in September 2017 in New York City. The new lineup rehearsed over several months to prepare the new material and get a feel for improvising together. The resulting record confirms the original band members’ idea that The Bad Plus could have a new life while retaining its democratic, leaderless group aesthetic — three composers, three identities, coming together under the umbrella of a band to create one unified sound. Other upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: DRUMline LIVE (January 19 – 20, 2019, Merriam Theater); Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (February 10, 2019, Verizon Hall); Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour 60th Anniversary Edition (March 23, 2018, Verizon Hall); DIVA Jazz Orchestra (April 27, 2019, Perelman Theater); and Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia – Get Organized (June 1, 2019, Verizon Hall).
