MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF JEWISH FEDERATION OF SPRINGFIELD, IL ISSUE #193 JFNA NEWS The Jewish Federations of North America is pleased to announce the appointment of Eric D. Fingerhut, currently the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of , as JFNA’s next president and CEO. "For more than half a decade, the Jewish world has watched as Eric spearheaded transformational change at Hillel," said Chair of the JFNA Board of Trustees Mark Wilf. “With a clear vision for the future of Jewish life on college campuses and universities, he took a 90-year-old organization and made it new again. We believe he can bring the same energy and imagination to Federation. He’s the right leader at the right time.” At Hillel, Fingerhut developed groundbreaking partnerships, asserted leadership in advocacy for Israel and instituted a cultural transformation. He doubled Hillel’s collective annual revenue from $90 million to nearly $200 million. He also revolutionized the development of talent across the entire Hillel network. Richard Sandler, chair of the JFNA CEO Search Committee and immediate past board chair of JFNA, commented, “We were certain that someone with the intellect and stamina to serve in the Ohio State Legislature, in the U.S. Congress, as chancellor of Ohio’s preeminent higher educational system and as president and CEO of our community’s most important campus organization is well positioned to lead JFNA.” “Eric brings more than an impressive resume,” Wilf said. “A CV can’t convey the character of a person. What did we learn about Eric through this process? We saw a man with a commitment to Jewish life and values. Humble despite his many accomplishments. Someone with a compelling vision for a Jewish future.” “I grew up in ,” Fingerhut recounts. “My mother was a receptionist at the Federation- supported Cleveland Jewish News for 30 years. My father sold insurance. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my early life was shaped by Federation. I went to pre-school at the JCC. I vividly remember carrying signs in the walkathons standing up for Israel during the 1967 and 1973 wars.” Fingerhut continued. “Never did I imagine that nearly a half century later, I would have the opportunity to lead a Movement that has impacted my life and so many others. It has a rich history, and I believe it can have an even more impactful future. I am excited to take on that challenge.” JFNA represents 147 Jewish Federations and over 300 Network communities, raising and distributing more than $2 billion annually and through planned giving and endowment programs. In support of social welfare, social services and educational needs, JFNA protects and enhances the well-being of Jews worldwide, and leads in the fields of caregiving, aging, philanthropy, disability, foreign policy, homeland security and health care. Nearly a year ago, JFNA began working with one of the top organizational management firms in the country to develop a strategic plan for Federations and JFNA. Strategic Task Force Chair Cindy Shapira commented, “When I learned that Eric was selected by the Search Committee, it was clear that his experience and talents were a one-to-one match to JFNA’s strategic priorities. He has a demonstrated track record in instituting data-informed decision making, a record in transformative talent development, as a cultural change agent and a keen vision on how to educate and engage the Jewish future.” Eric is slated to begin his tenure at JFNA on August 6, 2019.

Summer conjures up images of a somewhat slower pace, travel, vacations, and family time. For Federation, summer is the time for planning. We assess programs, services, and opportunities presented over the past year and apply the lessons learned for the next year. Federation’s committee members and respective chairs incorporate what they’ve heard and what you’ve said as part of their planning processes. As we near the close of this year’s campaign, we are gearing up for next year. We incorporate all this and more as we move into the budgeting process. To clarify timing just a bit, while the Federation Board year begins in June, the Nancy Sage budget year begins on January 1. The campaign funds raised in the 2019 campaign are Federation Executive applied to the fiscal year 2020. Thus, we budget on the basis of actual funds available Director from campaign and those allocated from Legacy Funds by the Legacy Board. We want to know from you how we can best accomplish Springfield Federa- tion’s mission of serving the Jewish people locally, in Israel and throughout the world through coordinat- ed fund raising, community-wide programming, social services, and educational activities. So please, think about the past year, look forward to next year and let me know your ideas and thoughts so that we can seriously consider them in our planning process. The Midwest and Western Galilee Partnership offers us new opportunities that range from interactive learning for adults and for children. Our new Western Galilee and Central Area Partnership2gether Consortium adds a new dimension to Federation, connecting us through programs and ideas to people in Israel’s Western Galilee, Budapest, and sixteen U.S. Federations. The partnership offers opportunities such as the Discovery Tour of the Western Galilee and Budapest; a “twinning” or partnering program between the joint religious school, B’rit Ysrael and a school in Israel meeting via computer to pursue a project; and, Learn2Gether, an adult education endeavor, featured in this newsletter. We will have opportunities to host delegations from the Western Galilee or Budapest as part of programs. Members from each of our the partnership communities, together, create programs designed to promote people-to-people relationships by building upon cultural, social, medical, educational, medical, and economic interests. I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities Partnership offers and participate in our local effort to design partnership programs. Most of Federation’s work is accomplished through committees. As a committee volunteer, you add your voice on a consistent basis to what Federation accomplishes. Committees coincide with areas of Federation’s local emphasis. They include Campaign, Education and Culture, Jewish Community Relations Council, and Legacy Board as well as the Cardozo and Maimonides Societies for lawyers and health care professionals, respectively. For example, if you want input into the film series, Education and Culture committee previews every film. If you’re interest is community relations, JCRC’s committees range from Israel to the Mitzvah Mobile Food Pantry. Services for seniors and retirees are through the Senior Committee. And, while we have standing committees, we have and will establish ad hoc committees as interest and need arise. The Jewish Federation of Springfield belongs to you. Your interests, thoughts, and ideas make a difference. They help shape what we do and how we do it so that we offer what is meaningful, relevant and of service to the community.

The mission of the Jewish Federation of Springfield, Illinois, is to serve the Jewish people locally, in Israel and throughout the world through coordinated fund raising, community-wide programming, social services and educational activities.
