1. CALL TO ORDER/WELCOME

Don Moeller called the meeting to order at 0830. He welcomed the committee to Belfast and thanked Mike Coull for his work organising the meeting. Randy McComb, Area Commander for Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service welcomed the committee to Belfast.

2. SELF-INTRODUCTION OF MEMBERS AND GUESTS

The committee completed self-introductions.

3. APPROVAL OF THE 12-13 APRIL 2016 (NFPA 909 SECOND DRAFT) MEETING MINUTES

The minutes of the above meeting, held at San Diego Natural History Museum were approved as presented.

4. CHAIR’S REPORT

Don Moeller advised of changes to the committee. Two new principal members are Mark Hopkins who replaces Russ Fleming, representing the National Fire Sprinkler Association and Robert Carotenuto representing the New York Botanical Garden.

Kevin Kelly has been appointed as the alternate to Dan Hubert and Thomas Nappo as alternate to Sheila Coppinger.

Stewart Kidd, who has served on the committee since 1993 has informed the chair and staff liaison that he is retiring from the committee.

5. REVIEW OF 22-23 SEPTEMBER 2016 OPTIONAL WORKING GROUP MEETING AND FM GLOBAL TOUR

A note of the optional meeting has been produced and was circulated with the agenda and is also available within the technical committee pages on the NFPA website.

6. NFPA FIRST DRAFT MEETING PROCEDURES

Staff liaison, Greg Harrington gave a presentation on the procedures to be adopted during the first draft meeting. He advised of the key dates, voting rules and general procedures. The first draft ballot date is August 3rd, 2017.

7. NFPA 914 TASK GROUP REPORT AND NFPA 914 PUBLIC INPUT

Sheila Coppinger provided an overview of the task group’s work. The committee reviewed the public input and created First Revisions on NFPA 914. The final actions will be available in the First Draft Report on the NFPA 914 document information page (www.nfpa.org/914).

8. NFPA 909 TASK GROUP REPORT

Debbie Freeland advised that, following a presentation and discussion during the working group meeting in Quincy, the issue of protection of wet collections is still being considered and she is awaiting further information from the Museum of Comparative , Harvard University.

The task group also wish to consider the need to consider the findings of the extinguisher project and how this may be used within the document.

9. GUEST PRESENTATION: HERIPROT EUROPEAN FIRE SAFETY PROJECT

Ged Phelan and Steve McHale provided an overview of a pan-European project that considered fire protection in heritage cities. They also explained how they have developed the work completed within the project into practical solutions that they are now applying to major projects in Liverpool, England and across the UK.

10. GUEST PRESENTATION: VACTEC VACUUM SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

Koen Van Herpe and Francois Asselman gave a presentation on the VACTEC fire protection vacuum sprinkler system, which they stated has been designed to increase the safety and reliability of traditional fire protection systems, by eliminating or limiting their drawbacks.

They advised that the system is operated in the same way as the traditional systems, however it is kept in standby mode under negative pressure. This operation principle through vacuum is the opposite of other systems, which are kept in service through positive pressure.

11. SCHEDULE FOR FUTURE COMMITTEE MEETINGS

1 Fall 2017: Optional NFPA 909 and NFPA 914 Task Group Meeting. Portland, Oregon, October 5-6, 2017. (G. Crosby). 2 Spring 2018: NFPA 914 Second draft Meeting. Washington, DC May 8-10, 2018 (M. Kilby). 3 Fall 2018: Optional NFPA 909 and NFPA 914 Task Group Meeting. Newport, Rhode Island, October 2-4, 2018 (B. Cronin) 4 Spring 2019: NFPA 909 First draft Meeting. Fred Leber to consider possibilities available for overseas meeting, potentially Italy or Israel.

12. OTHER BUSINESS

Grant Crosby gave a ‘run-through’ of a presentation that demonstrates the requirements for 909 and 914. The presentation is aimed at users, professionals and those considering adoption of 909 and 914.

The meeting was adjourned at 1430 on May 10, 2017.
