Grant us the necessary graces, so that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the joy of being evangelists, which the Church needs in the Third Millennium, may shine in the faces of all young people. Oh Christ, Redeemer of humanity, the image of Your open arms on the top of Corcovado, welcomes all people. In Your pas- chal offering, You led us, by the Holy Spirit, to encounter the Fa- ther as His children. Young people, who are nourished by the Eucharist, who hear You in Your Word and meet You as their brother, need your infinite mercy to walk along the paths of this world as disciples and missionaries of the New Evangelization. Oh Holy Spirit, Love of the Father and of the Son, with the splendor of Your Truth and the fire of Your Love, shed Your Light upon all young people so that, inspired by their experience at World Youth Day, they may bring faith, hope and charity to the four corners of the earth, becoming great builders of a culture of life and peace as well as catalysts of a new world. Amen! 5 MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI I invite you to prepare for World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro by medi- FOR THE TWENTY-EIGHTH WORLD tating even now on the theme of the meeting: “Go and make disciples of all nations!” (Matthew 28:19). This is the great missionary mandate that YOUTH DAY 2013 Christ gave the whole Church, and today, two thousand years later, it remains as urgent as ever. This mandate should resound powerfully in your hearts. The year of preparation for the gathering in Rio coincides with the Year of Faith, which began with the Synod of Bishops devot- ed to “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith”. I am happy that you too, dear young people, are involved in this missionary outreach on the part of the whole Church. To make Christ known is the most precious gift that you can give to others. “Go and make disciples of all nations!” (cf. Mt 28:19) 1. In the perspective of the Jubilee which is now drawing near, 1999 is aimed at “broadening the horizons of believers so that they will see things in the perspective of Christ: in the perspective of the 'Father who is in heaven' from whom the Lord was sent and to whom he has returned” (Tertio Millennio Adveniente, 49). It is, indeed, not possible to celebrate Christ and his jubilee without turning, with him, towards God, his Father and our Father (cf. Jn 20:17). The Holy Spirit also takes us back to the Father and to Jesus. If the Spirit teaches us to say: “Jesus is Lord” (cf. 1Cor 12:3), it is to make us capable of speaking with God, calling him “Abba! Father!” (cf. Gal 4:6). An acronym of Show People Love and Share Him, SPLASH Bartow will feature 400 middle-and high-school students from about 35 churches partaking in various projects ranging from con- ducting Backyard Bible Clubs to performing construction and yard maintenance tasks at residences and nonprofits. “The goal of SPLASH Bartow is to teach teenagers to serve for a lifetime — that they’re not the center of the universe ... and they were created to serve over a lifetime,” said the Rev. David Franklin, who serves as the SPLASH Bartow director and the as- sociational missionary for Bartow Baptist Association. “So we want them to spend a lifetime of looking how to bless their com- munity, wherever they go in life to be a giver and not a taker. “[For SPLASH Bartow], we’re looking for projects, like build- ing handicap ramps, cleaning up yards, painting houses, washing houses. We’ve got projects with senior adults where you go in and change light bulbs — things that people may not be able to do for themselves or they find themselves in a situation where they just need a helping hand.     1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT Tom Paulin recently commented on Christina Rossetti’s devotional poems: ‘Although it is helpful to know the biblical sources of these lines, I do not think that they, and indeed most of Rossetti’s poetry, are helped by that knowledge’. Despite advances made by feminist critics in the rediscovery and rehabilitation of Rossetti, there remains a critical reluctance to address the role of religion, and specifically of her reading of the bible, in the career of this famously devout poet. The purpose of my project is to demonstrate the effects of religious reading (both the reading of religious texts, and the religious reading of texts) to Rossetti’s poetry and thought.
