Pace e Bene Australia presents Kathy Kelly TheThe CostCost ofof War,War, TheThe PricePrice ofof PeacePeace "One way to stop the next war is to continue to tell the truth about this one." - Kathy Kelly Nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize, Kathy Kelly is probably the most respected leader in the American peace movement. She helped initiate Voices in the Wilder- ness, a campaign to end the UN/US sanctions against Iraq and openly violated UN/US sanctions by bringing medicine into Iraq. As a result, she and other campaigners were notified of a proposed $163,000 penalty and threatened with 12 years in prison. Kathy remained in Baghdad during the ‘Shock and Awe’ bombing, living alongside Iraqi civilians in an effort to prevent the war. In 2009/10 Kathy went to Pakistan to meet with organisations and families affected by the war. She has traveled to Afghanistan numerous times in 2010/11, where she has worked closely with the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers in search of non-military solutions to end the war. Kathy has also participated in nonviolent direct actions in Nicaragua, Haiti, Bosnia, Lebanon, Gaza, and the Occupied West Bank. She is currently a coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonvio- lence www.vcnv.org.
