• Agentic Cute (^.^): Pastiching East Asian Cute in Influencer Commerce
EAPC 2 (1) pp. 33–47 Intellect Limited 2016 East Asian Journal of Popular Culture Volume 2 Number 1 © 2016 Intellect Ltd Article. English language. doi: 10.1386/eapc.2.1.33_1 CRYSTAL ABIDIN University of Western Australia Agentic cute (^.^): Pastiching East Asian cute in Influencer commerce ABSTRACT KEYWORDS There has yet to be a definitive study of cute culture that is organically Singaporean. Influencers Drawing on existing work on East Asian cute culture and the regional popularity of bloggers commercial social media microcelebrities or ‘Influencers’ in Singapore, this article microcelebrity annotates three modes of agentic cute used to obscure the soft power that Influencers social media hold. Through the qualitative textual and visual analysis of content from three coupling popular Singaporean Influencers, and their associated blogs and social media, this cute article examines how three tropes that I term ‘the Doll’, ‘the Darling’ and ‘the Dear’ East Asia are enacted as cute femininities among adult woman. It argues that the subver- Singapore sive power of this performative cuteness is obscured by the corresponding sensual delight, romantic docility and homosocial desire that the Influencers develop in tandem with their cute self-presentations. By continually emphasizing stereotypical gendered relationships with their male partners, and relations with their followers, these Influencers are able to position themselves as non-threatening and submissive, when they are in fact quietly subverting these hierarchies for personal gain. Please Subscribe! Influencers, Social Media, and the Commodification of Everyday Life Crystal Abidin (B.Soc.Sci.) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Social Sciences Anthropology & Sociology Media & Communication 2016 Abstract Please Subscribe! Influencers, Social Media, and the Commodification of Everyday Life This dissertation is an analysis of how some everyday Internet users shape themselves into a popular form of social media microcelebrities increasingly being labeled “Influencers”. Influencers are shapers of public opinion who persuade their audience through the conscientious calibration of personae on “digital” media such as social media, supported by “physical” space interactions with their followers in the flesh to sustain their accessibility, authenticity, believability, emulatability, and intimacy. Emically, these five qualities are encapsulated in what Influencers refer to as “relatability”, or Influencers’ ability to captivate their audience and evoke in them the desire to identify with the Influencer. I investigate Influencers in the “lifestyle” genre, in which they accumulate a following on blogs and social media through the textual and visual narration of their personal, everyday lives and proceed to capitalize on their followers by inserting advertisements for products and services through the narrative device of an “advertorial”. Coming from an anthropological perspective, I am interested in the everyday practices of Influencers and their relationships to the larger industry. While the data presented in this thesis include some participant observation and interview snippets from “management firms” and “followers”, and while I pinpoint some of the ways these Influencers have reshaped the media structures in Singapore, my primary focus is on the lived experiences of the Influencers per se rather than a more macro-mapping of this media ecology.

Abstract Manietta, Joseph (Bazil) (M.A., Linguistics) Transnational Masculinities: The Distributive Performativity of Gender in Korean Boy Bands Thesis directed by Professor Barbara A. Fox South Korea enjoys much success with the exportation of popular media, including music, movies, and TV shows. One underlying component of this success seems to be Korea’s powerful and precise media manufacturing system. For Korean boy bands, Jung (2011) claims that constructing a “transnational” identity that relies on the production of a “manufactured versatile masculinity” allows idol boy groups to appeal transculturally to fans across borders with their flexible masculine identities. This hybrid masculinity is “multi-layered, culturally mixed, simultaneously contradictory, and most of all strategically manufactured”. Consistent with the performative nature of gender (Butler 1990), this multi-faceted masculinity is constructed through performances in different outlets such as music programs, reality TV, and game shows.
