Rhodes: A Translation and Commentary of the Joseph Smith Hypocephalus A translation and commentary of the joseph smith hypocephalus michael dennis rhodes my purpose in writing this paper has not been to try to prove that the prophet joseph s interpretation of the hypocephalus is correct that proof can come only from god and each individual must find it for himself rather it has been my aim to present a translation and commentary of the hypocephalus known as fac- simile 2 of the pearl of great price drawing upon our current knowledge of egyptian language culture and religion surpris- ingly at least to some in a number of instances joseph smith s interpretation accords with modern egyptology s in other cases however there is definite disagreement I1 have not tried to dis- guise or pass over these differences I1 have sought merelymerelyto to present them as I1 see them what significance can be attached to them each must decide for himself when dealing with things egyptian one must constantly be on guard against making absolute statements our knowledge of egyptian civilization is woefully small As alan gardiner has stated it must never be forgotten that we are dealing with a civilization thousands of years old and one of which only tiny remnants have survived what is proudly advertised as egyptian history is merely a collection of rags and tatters 1 at best we can make educated guesses which are in constant need of revision and which often when viewed in the light of subsequent know- ledge seem most ludicrous this paper then is not meant to be a definitive and final word on the joseph smith hypocephalus but rather in gardiner s words A target for others to tilt at hypocephalus is the name given to a small disk shaped object made of papyrus of re or horushorns3 ie the sun and the scenes portrayed on it relate to the resurrection or life after death which idea is more particularly symbolized by the course of the sun the upper portion of the hypocephalus represented the day sky and the lower portion the part with the cow the night sky hypocephali first appeared during the saite dynasty 663- 525 BC and their use continued down at least to the christian era 4 it is in the saite recension of the book of the dead chapter 162 that directions for the construction and use of the hypoce- phalus are given the section to which this chapter belongs 162- 165 is found only in the late saite version and contains many strange words and concepts eduard naville considers these chap- ters to be of foreign origin or at least influenced by sources outside egypt 5 E A wallis budge suggests that the influence is in part nubian 6 since the meaning of the hypocephalus is intimately connected with chapter 162 of the book of the dead I1 will     Hypocephalus in Ancient Egyptian Religion Mofida H. El Weshahy Rasha M. Omran Faculty of Tourism and Hotels Faculty of Tourism and Hotels Suez Canal University Fayoum University Abstract Hypocephalus is a small round shaped disk, made of plastered linen, papyrus, bronze, gold, wood, and either clay. Since the Late Period onwards; ancient Egyptians used to place such round desks under the heads of their deceased. This unusual disk, covered with extraordinary images and texts, is known as "Hypocephalus," which is a Greek word interpreted as ‘that which is below the head’, referring to its religious significance. This unusual religious pillow enabled the deceased to identify himself to the sun god by the light coming through. It was believed to magically protect the deceased, light and warmth envelope the head and body, so imposes the deceased divinity. The talisman on the disk with the mysterious shapes of the creator god Ra protect the deceased in the afterlife. It was often inscribed with chapter 162 of the Book of the Dead, consecrated to give warmth under the head of the dignified one. The current research was carried out to spot light on the etymology of the word ‘hypocephalus’, its symbolism as an amulet, and to clarification of scenes on both sides of the Hypocephalus. Preliminary results revealed the etymology of Hypocephalus literally 'that which is below the head', was placed between the head of the mummy and the funerary headrest. The earliest examples appeared during the Late Periods; they were simple inscribed pieces of papyrus, clay, bronze, gold, wood as well as stucco linen with vignettes' decorations.

Johnson [Page 1]Abstract: Research on the origins and nature of the Book of Abraham and the accompanying facsimiles has long been hampered by faulty methodology. And while the last few years have seen a significant reexamination of the assumptions that represent the underpinning of our understandings of the Book of Abraham, some unexamined assumptions persist. This study addresses seven aspects of the Book of Abraham, which include a discussion of the sources, the process, the results, the content, the witnesses, and the historical background. For each of these aspects, this study identifies lingering assumptions and shows how a proper methodology can validate or eliminate these assumptions from the scholarly discourse. The Book of Abraham is an ancient work revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith. A version of this book had fallen into the hands of the early Latter-day Saints and was among the texts discovered in the cache of ancient scrolls purchased from a traveling collection owned by Michael Chandler.1 The scroll that held the Book of Abraham also featured a unique vignette that illustrated a scene from the life of Abraham. This picture became Facsimile 1 of the published Book of Abraham. This study explores seven facets related to the production of the Book of Abraham. For each of these facets, a more careful and nuanced look at assumptions regarding the Book of Abraham is examined, and methodological parameters are recommended as a foundation for further studies. I hope to demonstrate that by discarding incorrect assumptions and relying on a proper methodological framework for our studies, a correct picture for the Book of Abraham will emerge.

    Dealing with Problematic Texts A Synoptic Study of the Hypocephalus Turin Cat. 2320 Luca Miatello Independent researcher S KNOWN, the hypocephalus is an amulet of circular shape, usually in stuccoed linen, linen or cartonnage, more rarely in bronze or papyrus, containing images of deities A and texts. It was placed at the head of the mummy for protection, and in order to generate the vital flame of the sun god, in accordance with the magical prescriptions of spell 162 of the Book of the Dead.1 Its circular shape represents the sun disk, or the iris of the udjat eye. It was in vogue in funerary assemblages of the Ptolemaic period, where it is found occasionally also on the calotte of mummy masks in cartonnage.2 Three hypocephali in bronze published by Petrie date to the 30th Dynasty,3 but most examples datable with a certain accuracy belong to the Greek period. A large number of pieces are broadly dated by the museums to the Late/Ptolemaic period, in lack of a more precise appraisal. The assertion that the earliest specimens date back to the 25th Dynasty4 is unsupported, being based on the incorrect dating of two Ptolemaic mummy masks,5 whose calottes, furthermore, do not present a hypocephalus, but a scarab and a scorpion, with spell 151a of the Book of the Dead and another text. Several specimens discovered in the 19th century probably originate from Thebes or Akhmim, but they were separated from the funerary assemblages to which they belonged, and the information on their origin and context may be lost, or difficult to be traced back.
