Edmonton Garrison Guthrie School Memorial Golf & CC Commander’s Message

As I write this, we’re half-way through a year that is signifi cant for a couple of reasons: First and foremost, it’s Canada’s 150th birthday! Second, the number of deployments currently aff ecting the Edmonton Garrison hasn’t been experienced in a number of years. The one thing both of these have in common, is that the Edmonton Military Family Resource Centre is here to help!

What better way to celebrate Canada’s 150th than by browsing through more than 150 programs, services and activities outlined in this issue of the Community Guide! Try something new: sign up for a fi tness class; learn a new sport or activity put on by our Community Recreation staff ; try your hand at golf or curling; attend an MFRC event with your family; or drop in to Community Coff ee. If you and your family are new to Edmonton Garrison, perhaps just drop in and say hi and let the friendly staff give you a quick tour of the facilities.

The Edmonton Garrison currently has a signifi cant number of personnel deployed on medium and small missions all over the world. While the size of the missions may be smaller than what we experienced during Afghanistan, it doesn’t make the impact on families any less. Several of the programs, services and activities listed in the guide can specifi cally help you manage the absence of a family member. What’s more, if you’re new to Edmonton Garrison, there are resources available to make your family’s transition to a new location just a little smoother.

The friendly and capable staff at the MFRC and PSP are working hard to provide the kinds of programs, activities and services that help families of the Edmonton Garrison fi nd their work-life balance. Take a look through the guide, you’ll see there’s certainly a lot available to support you and your family!

Emergency Childcare Service (ECS)

The MFRC can help CAF families who qualify, to meet unexpected and unique child care challenges with support in facilitating their short-term emergency child care requirements.

Military families are encouraged to have a Family Care Plan (FCP); however, families may sometimes face situations where conditions of service in the Canadian Armed Forces prove too challenging for the FCP to accommodate; when this happens additional child care support may be available.

The MFRC may subsidize a family’s child care request through direct child care services, expense reimbursement or through the coordination of independent child care services on a short-term basis.

A military family may be eligible for up to 96 hours of subsidized child care, or in special circumstances, reimbursement for child care expenses.

Eligibility Emergency Child Care needs and eligibility are assessed on a case-by-case basis during times of emergency, absence, deployment, illness, injury or loss; including:

• When CAF personnel are required to report for duty on short notice or are absent due to a military-related tasking, and neither their primary nor secondary child caregiver as identifi ed in their Family Care Plan (FCP) is available to care for their children; • When CAF personnel are absent due to a military-related tasking, and the family requires a period of respite from child care responsibilities for continued health and well-being; • When CAF personnel require short-term temporary child care in order to secure essential necessities (e.g. search for housing and employment, etc.) when newly posted, up to a maximum of 3 months after posting; • When CAF personnel or any of their family (including dependents of single serving members) are seriously ill/injured and participation at medical, mental health or social support service appointments is required, or respite from child care is necessary to aid in their recuperation; • When CAF personnel or any of their immediate family (including dependents of single serving members) has died and the family needs support through the repatriation, funeral and bereavement process.
