Ian Macky, who crewed for him in a Flying Dutchman, recalls Ron and his two eldest sons, Bruce and the late Murray, carrying a cherub yacht from the end of Bank Road, through the raupo to launch it onto the lake. “This caused some excitement among the lo- cals.” Ron was soon joined by other sailors, including the likes of Harold Hawley, Geoff Gibbs, Harold Bennett and Ron Mitchell. A hard-working committee got cracking after the club was formed in the 1960s - access to the lake was soon completed. Ron was the fi rst commodore of the Ngaroto Boating Club. “Always a keen sailor, Ron was always willing to pass on his knowledge to others,” says Mr Macky. After his retirement from his printing business (Typecraft Ltd) in Te Awamutu, he and his wife Nettie moved to Maraeti Beach. Ron spent many hours there teaching young sailors.
