Carrera’s homage to a fantastic age of motor sport

Salzburg, January 2018 – Screaming engines, flame-spitting exhausts, fat tyres and chunky looks are all part of the new retro-design vintage set Carrera has dedicated to the motor sport generation of the 1980s. The dream drives of yesteryear still raise the pulse of today’s fans. Carrera combines the modern technology of the Carrera DIGITAL 132 and DIGITAL 124 series with the classic racing cars of the past – in a fitting vintage look.

One special highlight in this year’s portfolio is the spectacular Carrera DIGITAL 132 ‘DRM Retro Race’ set featuring some magnificent sportscars from the 1980s. It’s also a homage to the racing cars of the most important motor racing series in Germany from 1972 to 1985 – the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. The set sends three classic legends out onto the grid: The Ford Capri Turbo ‘Liqui Moly Equipe No. 55’ attracted attention with its sponsors and with a Carrera logo on the front spoiler. Its rivals, the Porsche 938/78 ‘Moby Dick’ DRM Norisring 1981 and the BMW M1 Procar ‘Sauber Racing, No. 90’, Norisring 1980 complete the set perfectly. There’s another very special feature in this Carrera set; a nostalgic sheet metal hoarding that enhances the vintage-feel to the race circuit. The stylish racer from ‘back then’ looks great right now and is a ‘must have’ for every nostalgic enthusiast!

There are also several other memorable 1:32-scale young classics in the vintage Carrera car pool waiting for a run out. The triumphal red Porsche 917K Porsche Salzburg ‘No.23’, 1970 is ready to hit the grid. In 1970 this sports car made motor racing history and became a veritable Salzburg-born legend with Porsche’s first overall victory in the French 24-hour race. The powerful red BMW M1 Procar ‘BASF No.80’ 1980 is another absolute eye-catcher. The striking BASF spiral design looks great speeding around Carrera racetracks and in every enthusiast’s car pool. The US carmakers at Ford have entered two cars for the retro race. The yellow-and-green Ford Capri Zakspeed Turbo ‘Jürgen Hamelmann-Team, No.4’ is a sight to behold, and the typical Ford Capri rear spoiler ensures every drift on the Carrera track is an exquisite experience. The second Capri also comes from the Zakspeed stable. In 1979 and 1980 the Ford Capri Zakspeed Turbo ‘Sachs Sporting, No.52’ was a top competitor in the Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterschaft.

Austria’s largest automobile manufacturer, Carrera, has also increased membership of its retro car pool to include a number of immensely popular 1:24-scale models. The Ford Capri Zakspeed Turbo ‘D&W-Zakspeed Team, No.53’ never fails to turn heads with its magnificent black-and-blue livery, and in sporting terms Klaus Niedzwiez was the racing driver that guided this great looker to a number of chequered flags in the DRM. Races on what was known as the ‘green hell’ circuit at the Nürburgring in the Eifel region of Germany became legends of motor racing history and were a permanent fixture of the

DRM schedule. The BMW M1 Procar ‘No.201’, Nürburgring 1000km 1980 is a homage to this famous race track and the red and green ring of the livery surrounds the car completely. These two cars go head-to-head in the brand new ‘Youngtimer Showdown’ set. The stately 8-metre circuit provides these powerful cars with a perfect stage for their shows of strength. The Ford Capri Zakspeed Turbo ‘Würth-Zakspeed Team, No.2’ is yet another racing car pool addition from the cooperation between Ford and Zakspeed and in the 70s it was the dominant force in DRM racing. No other motor racing stable collected as many championship wins in this period. BMW M1 Procar was a very special feature of this time, since the Procar racing series only ran for two years, in 1979 and 1980. The German driver managed to turn heads everywhere with the bright yellow BMW M1 Procar ‘Team Winkelhock, No.81’, 1979. One vintage classic simply can’t be overlooked. The Porsche 917K made motor racing history with numerous long-distance victories. For many the dream may never come true, but Carrera enables motorsport fans to drive a Porsche 917K J. W. Automotive Engineering ‘No.6’, Watkins Glen Test 1970 themselves and get the maximum out of this car on their home-based racing circuits.

Whatever the team, stable or model a Carrera fan prefers – they all have one thing in common: Stylish and faithfully reproduced vintage models are currently very popular and look great whatever the circuit.
