"It's 98 degrees back home," said Workman, who hails from Bowie, Texas. "It was colder than I'm used to. I'll take the hot weather any day." It was 61 degrees when the game started a little after 7 p.m. and the temperature gauge dropped about 10 degrees after the sun went down and the lights came on in the Gatemen's 6-0 Cape Cod Baseball League win over the Braves at Dorn Park. A 6-foot-5 right-hander from the University of Texas, Workman was all business on the mound. He gave up only two hits in six innings and was happy with his first start for the Gatemen (2-2). "There's always room for improvement, but I was happy with the way I threw the ball my first time out," said Workman, who pitched about 50 innings as a starter/reliever for the Longhorns. "I had to work my way back from a lot of 3-0 counts, but I made some good pitches when I had to. I'll be able to build on this and get better." Workman notched eight strikeouts and walked only two batters for the Gatemen, who also got three scoreless innings from Dallas Keuchel, a left-hander from the University of Arkansas, Jimmy Saris, a right-hander from Georgetown, and closer Chris Hicks, a left-hander from Georgia Tech. "We needed to get some guys some early season work," Wareham manager Cooper Farris said. "Brandon threw the ball really well. He gave us six strong innings and we got three good efforts out of our bullpen." The Gatemen opened the scoring with a two-out rally in the top of the third inning that gave Workman a 4-0 lead to work with. Bourne starter Tyler Blandford, a right-hander from Oklahoma State, dug a deep hole for himself by loading the bases on walks to Jake Lemmerman, a shortstop from Duke, Connor Rowe, an outfielder from Texas, and Ryan Pineda, a second baseman from Cal State Northridge. Brett Eibner, a designated hitter/outfielder from Arkansas, knocked in two runs with a ground-ball single up the middle and Steve Liddle, an outfielder from Vanderbilt, followed with a bouncer up the middle that made it 3-0. Raynor Campbell, a third baseman from Baylor, then plated another run with a hit-and-run single and the Gatemen went on to cap their scoring with two more runs in the sixth on a bloop single to right center by Rowe and an infield hit by Pineda. http://www.southcoasttoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080619/SPORTS/8061903... 6/19/2008 SouthCoastToday.com - Sports Page 2 of 2 The Braves (2-2), who stranded solo runners in the first and third innings against Workman, went down in order against him in the fifth and sixth. They put runners on first and third with one out in the sixth, but Workman came back strong to get the final two outs on a strikeout and a pop fly to left field. Keuchel, Saris and Hicks held the Braves to four hits the rest of the way and that made Farris a happy man. "We got a nice combination of pitching and hitting tonight. Our pitchers made some tough pitches, we played some good defense and it was good to see us rally like that in the third," Farris said. "To win in this league, you have to get some two-out hits and we did a good job keeping that inning going." The Gatemen host Yarmouth-Dennis for a 7 p.m. game at Spillane Field on Friday. Cape Cod Baseball League Teams Up with Pierce‐Cote/Regan Communications Group Contact: Sean Gonsalves, Regan Communications (508) 420‐5566 ext. 118 (w) 617‐308‐8393 (c) [email protected] Cape Cod, MA – Pierce‐Cote/Regan Communications Group (PC/RCG) has a new teammate. The Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) – the nation’s premier summer collegiate baseball league – has retained the services of the premier integrated marketing communications firm in the region to assist the CCBL in elevating the league’s baseball brand. “This is a match made on a field of dreams. We’ve long been recognized as the league where fans can see the stars of tomorrow play today,” said CCBL President Chuck Sturtevant. “Bringing a power‐house like Pierce‐Cote/Regan Communications on board will help us extend the reach of our unique brand of baseball and all that it offers players and fans alike.” With one out of every six current Major League Baseball players among CCBL alumni, the league is as strong as it has ever been. However, with the emergence of other summer leagues, the advent of social media, and a rapidly changing media landscape, CCBL does not intend to rest on its laurels. “Since our founding in 1885, the Cape League has relied on the commitment of a mostly volunteer staff to handle all of the administrative and communications work. We remain confident in the product we offer, but in this day and age we have to work harder than ever to keep the Cape League at the forefront of amateur baseball for generations to come,” Sturtevant said.

  • 21-2 Introduction and Overview
INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW HISTORY, DEMOGRAPHICS AND STATISTICS A Brief History The Town of Barnstable’s beginnings as a Town date back to a grant to two Europeans and their associates, and to its settlement, mainly by the Rev. John Lothrop and his parishioners from Scituate. The year was 1639, less than 20 years after the Pilgrims on the small sailing ship Mayflower landed first at Provincetown and then at Plymouth to begin the colonization of New England. These first settlers were mainly farmers. They had to be in order to survive. Peaceful dealings with the indigenous people began as early as the first land purchases. West Barnstable was obtained from the Native American Serunk and Barnstable from Nepoyetum in the first ten years; the Hyannis and Hyannis Port area from Yanno and Cotuit from Paupmumuck in the first twenty-five years. The price seemed to be right. For the whole Town, the cost was four coats, two small breeches, Barnstable County Courthouse three axes, three brass kettles, a broad hoe, a day’s plowing, one dwelling house and 20 pounds in English money. The office of selectmen had been established in 1665 and twenty years later, the Town became the County seat for Barnstable County. It wasn’t until the mid-eighteenth century that the Cape, including the Town of Barnstable, had become largely a maritime region. The oyster lured many settlers and the maritime industry was becoming a major employer. The years after the war of 1812 brought great expansion. The Town had developed many items for export including flax, corn, rye, wheat and onions, salt from burgeoning saltworks and dried cod from its fishermen.
